Patriotism is like religion, or love, or any other emotion-based thought process. Devotion to a (noun) is not a bad thing, unless it is blind and unquestioning....
And...using patriotism or nationalism as an excuse to push one's culture on another is a pretty f'n heinous crime from my moral standpoint. Thing is, most of the people who do so are too stupid to realize they're doing it.
    Also, well said.

Not the world's bully, it's foremost superpower.

    It's not a playground, child.

And look at the censorship by Polaris-X. Let people respond and talk to who they want to.

    1. people CAN respond to talk to who they want ... it was only a suggestion on my part ... i don't control the board

    2. if you are gonna send me rude pms - at least give me the opportunity to respond ... sending a pm and then disabling it is kinda weak don't you think?

thanks for proving my point tho ... all class you are ...
  • I think I'll take Polaris' advice.

  • As one of a few conservatives on this site, I have disabled the PM along time ago.

You and your comrades are SO polite, I was overwhelmed by the kind things that were said.

    Have a nice day.

I completely disagree. This is one of the most over-stated uber-nationalist statements our citizens and leaders toss around.

Firstly, albeit our nation was founded upon wonderful and highly respectful morals, ideals and codes, history has shown from the minute we were a nation until this day, those rules do not apply to everyone equally. Whether it was slavery, the right to vote, equal rights, land rights, the move westward and many other basic freedoms which applied to groups we deem as less than equal. It's a glaring hypocrisy of our actual practice compared to the tenets our nation was founded upon. All men are created equal in practice has never, ever meant anything to the chosen and select few it was intended to represent.

Secondly, no one in any field of work should solely be respected or paid honor too because of their choice of career. We haven't had a draft since Vietnam, roughly 40-50 years ago. Also to delude yourself into thinking that our soldiers being elsewhere and in many cases not having to do anything but protect our economic interests somehow protects our rights home is ridiculous. You can easily look back at history and read all about how much of foreign policy, wars and issues stems from our self-interest being portrayed in an defensive manner and then correlated to riling up the citizens to get behind it. Whether it was removing the British, the Civil War, killing the Indians, the Mexican war, WW2, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan and others I have left out. We haven't fought a war that actually protected our citizens since WW2 and even that had some underlying instances which it suitable our personal necessity to be involved, not some grandiose noble mission as many would have you believe.

Lastly, it has been a very rare instance that a foreign threat even cares about America's freedoms enough to take it over. We can say the British during our founding and then probably the Nazi's/Japanese during WW2. The Cold War was completely different because it was merely escalation through expansion to other nations (2nd party enemies) and a philosophical in practice. In only a small few instances were there actually ever anything direct between the USSR and US. So I wouldn't even count the USSR in that respect. To assume we should always fear a foreign threat from take over is merely whipping the citizens into a war type frenzy which allows for lack of dissent, removal of freedoms and uber-nationalism.

Besides nonsense grammatical comments, do you have anything of substance to add to the discussion or things I posted? And is the name calling necessary? You claim everyone says stuff to you, yet you instigate and begin it. Act like an adult.

    Really?

I wouldn't have guessed that based on those around here.

I would say as a generality Americans would think that, compared to them, patriotism doesn't exist north of the border.

If it's not about the grammar, then why is that the only thing you really commented on? You didn't say much about the rest of my comment at all.

And what is your obsession with my occupation? This is the 3rd time you're asking.. kinda strange. And just to be clear cause it sounds like you're trying to bait me into something, I am not a teacher. What do you do for a living?

really? but it's ok to send such a BS pm to someone? I don't think that pm's like that are warranted, especially when I said NOTHING negative to them in the forum, or ever sent them a PM. gimme a break. they deserve to be outed for the person they are if they're going to act like that.

Not cool to post that. bad form sir.

If you want to tattle go ahead and send the pm to Kat or Sea. Still not a very cool move.

Certainly the pm is pretty stupid, but why not just delete it? It's called a pm...private message...PRIVATE...get it? If you find it threatening, send it to the admins.

I didn't find it threatening, I found it ignorant and childish. It was completely unwarranted, and he doesn't allow for responses. If I was tattling, I'd be sending it to the mods. By doing this, I'm discouraging people from sending such BS to me in the future.

  • I've talked about my occupation before. Look up my posts if you're interested.

    Its NOT a grammar thing.

"Uber-Nationalism" sounds like a term my college professors would have made up.

Your view of American history would earn you high marks from the academic intelligensia.

I disagree w/ you in the strongest possible terms.

Patriotism and jingoism aren't the same thing. It's a fine line and ol' Merriam-Webster doesn't help us much. Historical examples might. Shall we try Hitler as an easy example of a jingoist (among other things)? Perhaps Sam Adams as a classic example of a patriot.

He came to believe that humanity needed to do away with the concept of countries and nationalism that made people feel superior to those of different nationalities.

Nice first post. Sam Adams easily taste better than Hitler.
