I went to the first match there after the change over from Telstra to ANZ, half of the staff still had Telstra uniforms and the signs were still up on the scoreboard.

Well the stadium where the Brisbane show is currently called QSAC (Queensland Sports and Althetics Centre), when it was being used by the Broncos whilst Lang Park AKA Suncorp Stadium was being rebuilt, it was called ANZ Stadium. To the purists it will alway be Lang Park. But those of us Brisbanites who remember why t was built in the first place ie The Commonwealth Games 1982, it will always be QEII (QE2). As in the Queen Elizabeth II.

Others are Melbourne's Docklands = The Telstra Dome = now known as Etihad Stadium

Perth Oval wil be refurbed and called nib Stadium (a health care provider who actually has no retail outlets in WA..so WTF??)

I really despise corporate naming of sporting and tertainment venues.

aah heck i dont know what the brisbane entertainment centre is called these days, quite possibly just that, but some of us just call it boondall. much like ACER arena will always be the superdome. and ive lost count of the name changes for endeavour/ronson/ toyota/shark park.

and yep no matter what the corps call it lang park will always be lang park.

Even when they changed the name of The Civic Arena to Mellon Arena it was annoying.
I like the Mellon Arena name. It always makes me think of Rodney Dangerfield from his "Back to School" character.

Not that I'm a Met's fan but I like the name citi field. It isn't such an obvious corporate name like some of the others (more like city field). Uncle Sam's rung the register for about 7 billion dollars off that bailout. I don't think he's complaining.

citi field is a horrible name and it's even more horrible the coupons would do business with a company that has had finical troubles. citi field is def an obvious corporate name. it shoulda been called shea field or shea park. shame the coupons bucked tradition for cash.

  • In Cleveland they call the football stadium "Cleveland Browns Stadium" but they sold the names to the entrances. So like instead of A, B, C entrance or North, East, West, you have to figure out where First Merit Gate is.

Usually the names of venues are because of the business being in-town though. LIke Progressive Field, Progressive is based near Cleveland, and Quicken's owner also owns the Cadavaliers.

Are there places they sell the naming right s out of town?

What was officially the Great Woods Center for the Performing Arts, or just "Great Woods" for short, in Mansfield, MA became the Tweeter Center and now the Comcast Center. Not super terrible names, but confusing when there’s a Tweeter Center in PA and also somewhere else I think? And there’s an office building in Philly called the Comcast Center, which is fine I guess for a place of business. Naming venues after corporations never made sense to me... why would this increase business for these companies? It seems to just annoy people and leave them with negative feelings toward the company. Granted, most people are zombies and don’t care, but there are plenty that do.

I will always call it Great Woods and most people I know call it the same. I was thinking of making a T-shirt that reads “This place is called GREAT WOODS” or “GREAT WOODS FOREVER”… something like that, to wear to shows there. I saw my first PJ show there when it was still officially Great Woods.

The 1-800-ASK-GARY Amphitheatre is a new low in corporate naming.

    I just found this story: http://www2.tbo.com/content/2010/jun/17 ... s-scitech/

And they lost the fight to keep the word "nigger' in there. Funny considering the guy whose nickname it was, was actually of anglo-saxon decent. :? His surname was Brown!

There are heaps of names around that are potentially racist, that were named many years before PC came in. We have Balckfella creek, Gin Gin, Black Gin CReek, Chinamans Creek.....and what about the coons...ie Coonamble, Coonabarabran, Coongulla...I could keep going. But blah I'm over it.....oh and sorry we derailed and took your thread on another course!! ;)

Well, here in Columbus , at least they make some kind of sense. We have Nationwide Arena( which they actually own a major part of , not just naming rights and they are based here) ,Huntington Park (local bank, based here , home to The Columbus Clippers AAA baseball think now a Cleveland Indians farm team) and lastly Value City Arena at the Schottenstein Center ( OSU's newer B-ball and hockey arena again a local company and family thats big into real estate here and elsewhere).

By the time the new Cowboys stadium was almost finished, the economy had started to tank. Supposedly AT&T was going to purchase the naming rights but then said they couldn't justify the expense. That didn't stop them from naming a new performance hall in Dallas though.

Jerry Jones said that until some entity purchases the rights (i.e. pays his billionaire self some obscene amount of money) it will just be called Cowboys Stadium. I think that's way better than calling it after some corporation. Everybody calls it JerryWorld anyway. :P

Wrigley Field, I forget that that is even named after the chewing gum.

Same with Safeco Field, it just fits and I don't think of it as the insurance stadium or anything. I would hate it if they ever changed it's name. I was thankful when Safeco Insurance got biught out they were allowed to continue to do business as Safeco. Hence, no ballpark name change.

Qwest Field blows for a football stadium name. And, they may have to rename it. Wasn't Qwest just bought out or something? Seahawks Stadium was way better.

Thankfully the venue names are pretty respectable here.

The Academy venues changed from being sponsored by Carling to O2, but they're all still called Brixton Academy or Islington Academy, etc. I think if Wembley ever had it's name bought there'd be a serious uproar.

There are the generic O2 Arena's though, both here in London and in Dublin (where I'm seeing PJ on Tuesday!). But that's not a shockingly horrible name.

I remember when Pine Knob in Detroit (well, Clarkston) became DTE Enrgy theatre... which is utter rubbish.

I still have cups that say 'Seahawks Stadium...the nest that YOU built'
I hate 'Key Arena' I wish they left it the original name 'The Coliseum' I have good memories of seeing bands play there, and legends played there...rename it to Hendrix Arena...that would be better.

Univerity of Louisville's new basketball arena: the KFC Yum! Center (replacing the historic Freedom Hall is one thing, but to do it with that being the new building's name :? )

University of Louisiana-Lafayette basketball arena: the Cajundome

University of San Diego's basketball arena: Jenny Craig Pavillion AKA "Slim Gym"
