Meningitis

Has anyone here ever had experience with this disease here?

My little boy had to go to the doctors this morning with a rash....only on his neck, but the Doc confirmed he felt it was a 'classic rash associated with meningitis'....

He shows no other symptoms whatsoever, and is full of it.....My question to anyone who has had this experience is is how did things turn out for you and what treatment was necessary in your case.

I have researched the internet but found most sites give you the cold hard facts, and i was just looking for some input from anyone who has been in this position before themselves.....

Anyway, im off back later for the results of some tests so will know more then.

You know before this I thought going to Ireland and seeing PJ was 'everything'.....talk about perspective....

Wait for complete and proper diagnostic. If your little one has NO OTHER symptom than the rash, it could be something different. There are other hemorrhagic rashes that are similar to the meningitis one (happened to my daughter when she was about 6 months old)

If it is meningitis, there are different types (sorry, not very 'medical' words) some virulent, others not. Where is he now? Hospital? Has the rash spread? Does it look like bruising?

I know a couple of kids and one adult who had meningitis, they are all fine. The thing about this disease is that you have to be on board quickly.

Hope it's nothing but one of those weird rashes.

this is what Im hoping too....

My only experience of this thing was a friend at work who's daughter went through an horrific time. Probably as bad as it gets. So i naturally panic whenever I hear about it, so to hear it suggested about my own little guy wasnt so pleasant.

I think you are right though, the only symptom he has is the rash - the worrying thing is its all over his neck. apparently where the virus usually starts. But he hasnt displayed one other thing. So im pretty confident, being the eternal optimist that all will be fine.

Measles starts behind the ears and spreads down the neck to the rest of the body!! Meningitis rash can start anywhere. If the doctor hasn't sent you immediately to the hospital, I would be optimistic too. They don't mess about with mengitis as it CAN be so quick. Same with measles really.

Another one of those 'childhood diseases'!

Fortunately have not really got much experience with this.

But hope your little one is OK.

meningitis isn't a disease ... i only point that out because from what i know there is a meningococcal disease that can cause meningitis which would involve curing that disease as opposed to treating meningitis ...

the thing with meningitis is that it's surrounding the brain and spinal cord ... two obviously very sensitive areas ... failure to diagnose it and treat it properly can have fatal consequences ... the condition itself is usually easily treated but unlike other things you can get - it has greater consequences ...

if your daughter meets the criteria for the possibility of meningitis - she should be checked

my dad had an ear infection but ultimately died from meningitis because his body was weak from trying to fight the infection as well as being diabetic ...

Bad choice of words on my part. You're right, it's a viral or bacterial infection.

    Any news yet?

Waiting is crazy. Though I would take solace that there is no rush. Has the rash spread any? Is you son still feeling fine?

    Awh thanks guys....

Well nothing had changed since this morning. His rash is there and is clearly broken blood vessels under the skin hence it won't go away.

Yet because he shows not one other symptom they said don't panic, watch him closely for the next few days and any change to go straight back. He didn't seem at all concerned as Edward was very bright and alert.

False alarm I think - thank god - thanks a lot for your concern advice and well wishes

definitely for now although we have noticed it in a few more places after bath time. Watchful eye needed I think

I'm no expert but I always thought that meningitis was marked by neck stiffness and pain. Rashes I always associated more with other bugs (e.g. strep infections). Hoping for a speedy recovery for your little one.
