i know you werent and i agree.. the numbers dont add up. but if you produce to excess in anticipation of... oh lets just say 8 billion people, then one day you are going to have 8 billion people. i understand our culture thrives on excess, but i think the time has come to learn new tricks and produce to sustain the population we have now.

no heidi i have no idea how much life this planet can support. but what i do know is the earth is still gonna be here when we are no longer and given resources are finite it stands to reason for our own preservation we try and learn to live sustainably... that way we can be here way longer than we will be given our current trajectory.

Ironically, the past 100 years have pretty much been the reason why our world is getting worse. Industry, political instability, war, economic polarization, environmental damage and globalization just to name a few... if that's your idea of humanity then yes it is wonderful.

    CONservative governMENt

Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law-breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. - Louis Brandeis

Maybe becuase you internet warriors trying to save the world via the the problem your bitching about. Its hypocrites that give the human race a bad name.

oh honey im not trying to save the world. im just here discussing issues and sharing ideas with others.

You're pretty funny - I bet there is some good stuff amongst your 18,000 posts! (I'm serious here!)

On the topic tho: From my experience of periods of extreme abundance and of extreme deprivation, it's incredibly difficult to give up the luxuries that you have once had or just had, and adapt to living with less - and very easy to almost instantly 'forget where you came from'. If you start with less it's easier to live frugally.

Right now it would be easier for pavarotti to fit through the eye of a needle than for the west to give up it's luxuries, and our very privileged easy lifestyles . So I'm kind of with you Cate - trying to save the world from your armchair is a fairly dubious endeavour.

Personally I think the only thing that is going to save the planet is some hardcore intra-national, intra-state, inter-national RULES and LAWS.

So my own conclusion is I'm not going to recycle a single thing until India, China, USA, etc etc are forbidden by international law to wreck the planet any further. Otherwise it risks reducing everybody's well meaning existence to complete tokenism (rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic?)

Headline: 'Planet disintegrates under it's own excesses, human race extinct - but at least the Liberals felt better about themselves whilst it happened!'

isn't the point of a message board to discuss?
and also how do you know people on here don't do anything?
i mean, some spend more time than others on here, but really do you think that's all some people do?

I also love (like the rest of the posters) how you have hope for humanity because of the last 100 years of advancements........... that's like saying we should have hope for health of our youth because of the invention of cheeseburgers.

Yeah you guys are right, in the past 100 years we havent come up with anything beneficial for the human race at all,
We are already developing cars the make cleaner air when they are driven... but your right we should just aboned it all, give up the luxuries of being able to see generations of our familys live, laugh and love so we can save some trees??? If it wasn't for our technological advancements we wouldn't know what we are doing to the earth or how to make it better.
