It is kind of sad that those have been the focus of this World Cup.

They're so annoying. And yet - I ordered one for my husband for Father's Day. Orange, so he can support the Netherlands (his heritage is Dutch). He can blow it one time then we can have the ceremonial breaking of the vuvuzela.

I wonder about being in the stadium and sitting next to a group of people blowing them the whole time. Man, your ears must be bleeding.

Agreed... and it's gonna be remembered for it too... unless they stop it... which they won't... so it looks like this is the year of the vuvu

I reckon there's a half decent chance it's affecting the quality of the games too, how the hell could ANYONE focus during that?

i heard the bbc was going to put up a separate feed of the games with the vuvu's filtered out...why can't they (and espn) just do it for all the feeds? :?

They did starting with today's games ... it was far less pronounced. Supposedly, it'll get better.

But, I do miss the chanting / singing.

Now, if this crap was brought oversees, I'd say ban that crap. I honestly hate all artificial noice makers like this, or the thundersticks that the Anaheim Angels made popular here in the US.

But for Africa ... keep 'em.

agree with all of this. it's home field tradition. everyone has to get over it and focus their attention on the games.

I agree, this is Africa's way. It has been strangely quiet here today. I think everyone is a bit nervous about tonight's game. Last Friday before the first match it was crazy. Everywhere you went you heard the vuvuzelas. All day. We had a meeting at work and we had to stop several times because the vuvuzelas outside were so loud we couldn't hear. Hoping for a big win and a very loud celebration tonight!

It's an African tradition for... what... six years??????? If it was in a certain Irish city (so as not to offend others) could they go around stabbing everyone and call it tradition and say it's the xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx way????? I doubt it... so why can the Africans go around destroying everyones hearing?

jeez helen you amuse me sometimes... id hate to hear wht you say if you were actually in south africa sitting next to an enthusiastic supporter... stabbing someone doesnt really equate to making a whole lot of noise for ones own amusement.

Making them out of plastic and blowing them at soccer games may be a recent phenomenon. But the original, authentic version, made of kudu horn, dates back hundreds of years. So its definitely based on a long tradition. You still see the "real thing" on occasion at the games and celebrations here.
