he speeds songs up.. not alot but a notable difference. it's not a bad thing, those who complain are spoiled and want the songs exactly the same live as the studio version.. every drummer does it.
I will be what i could be
Once I get out of this town

Songs are a lot faster now on a number of them. I don't know if it's Matt who is to blame, but some of the old songs that had some character with the mid-tempo are now being played like they just want to get them done with.

That's just dumb...I think most people don't like the fact that there's no groove when the songs get sped up so fast.

I guess I'll say "THEY play Evenflow, Given to Fly and Force of Nature too fast" from now on.

It cannot be argued that a song like State has been totally sped up. I noticed Given to Fly getting the same treatment on this tour.

Even a song like Sometimes is being played too fast (on some shows, at least)

Do you really think that out of the 5 guys in the band, its the least senior member of the band who is calling the shots and making the decision to speed up the songs?

Its either a collective decision or purely Ed's call... but it definitely ain't Matt doing it unless the others are on board.

Its hard to judge who is speeding up a song. Drummers typically set the tempo of a song. Let's say that Matt is speeding up songs, for the sake of discussion. If the band is now anticipating that songs will be played faster (from the previous times they've played them fast) then when they do the next guitar intro (like on Sometimes, etc) then they'll start it faster so it will match the speed they anticipate playing. ...but for all we know Ed wants to speed the fuck thru them.

I'm assuming the band is playing it however they want to play it. They're fully capable of slowing it down if they want to. They may not even be aware of some of these songs being played faster.

But, they sure don't play 'em like they used to in general.

If Eddie didn't like the way the songs were being played, we'd be seeing him shoot a lot more of his patented "death stares" at the band. I'd imagine they play 'em how he wants to play 'em.

Could it be that they have just gotten better at playing the songs and like anything you do over and over your bound to get faster and faster.

Listen to SOLAT from A drop in the park, and then a 2010 version.......Really not that far off from each other (although there were some super fast versions in 2006, I will admit that)

Sometimes is initially paced with Ed on the guitar.....then the bass/drums kicks in, as I'm sure u know...

They have played given to fly both fast and regular with Matt.......same with Even Flow........

Its the whole band, not just Matt.......but I'm also sure he has free reign to up the tempo when he feels like its necessary.

I was actually listening to Given To Fly on Yield the other day......and wanted the damn song to get some energy and speed up....soo much better live....

I actually found it a lot of fun to listen to the 2003 versions of Even Flow...from the first show of the tour to the last show of the tour.

The speed is frantic, and as a guitarist in a Pearl Jam tribute band (I play Stone)...playing that riff, that fast...is fucking fun.

I'm pretty sure it's not just Matt for why the songs are fast.

I'm also pretty sure if it WAS Matt, the band must really like it because I can't see Ed or Stone putting up with anything they didn't really want.

My guess the reason why the songs are so fast is due more to Ed than Matt...

Jack Irons used to play things a lot SLOWER... I don't think he could keep up with Matt's tempos, or even some of the ones on the album. i.e. Spin the Black Circle. Matt definitely plays too fast sometimes, but it seems like he's backed down a little bit this tour?

Here's the thing.... Some songs are played really way too fast, but I don't mind. Why? Because the faster the songs are played, the more songs we get to hear at a show. They have around 2 1/2 - 3 hours to play a show. If they played the songs at regular speed, we'd be hearing 23 songs instead of 32 (please don't check my math). I say play fast so we can hear more.

I went back and listened to Live on Two Legs for the first time in a while. The songs seemed slow and kinda boring. I like the way the band is playing now. No, I love it. People need to stop complaining. I saw over 120 songs on the East Coast swing (Boston, Newark and MSG I & II [I live in Arkansas]) and I can't stop thinking about how awesome it was. Slow down? Hell no!
