I train military personnel on how to spot and avoid IED attacks. Right now, there are about 24-25 IED and roadside bomb incidents every day in Afghan.
Once detonated, the needles become like other shrapnel. But they are really designed to stick in the fingers and hands of EOD (bomb disposal) techs as they sift thru the sand to uncover and disarm these bombs. They are actually laying face down on them when they do this.
Some other tactics the Taliban are currently employing:
-breast implant bombs for women. (PETN: the chem that was used by Xmas bomber) The doctors performing these were trained at UK med school, and have returned to their home countries to perform these surgeries.
This is to avoid the new body scanners that show off your junk to the TSA. Undetectable.
-killing children and placing the bomb in their sewn up carcass b/c they know American troops will stop to investigate a child's body.

I pray our troops will come home safely.
This explains why there is such problem with casualties from IED's. By that I mean YOU are training people. :?

What hole? This thread's about a type of weapon and tactic that enemy combatants are using to kill Americans.
I think I have an interesting perspective on it that hasn't been represented here yet.
Most Americans are at least concerned about it.
B/c a few anonymous PJ fans (usually the same handful of haters) post personal attacks in response to legitimate subject matter, is no reason to stay silent.
It's nice to make friends here, especially since we all share a passion for PJ, but I'd hardly consider the haters to be enemies.

Doesn't bother me at all. Post away haters.
yeah, don't you hate it when people post personal attacks as opposed to debating...
you know, stuff like this has no place here:
except for Chucklehead, who's concern is that the Taliban gets fair and balanced coverage.
You guys are depressing.

Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law-breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. - Louis Brandeis
Ha. Careful Tree, u might see the waaaaaaaambulance pullin up at ur house!
what does this even mean...?
and I find it amusing that you whine about personal attacks, yet you hand them out as if they are gifts...and when called out, you post some incoherent ramble...
to be honest, I don't believe you train anyone to do anything...
How are the cave dwellng Taliban cultivating the HIV? How are they storing it? Won't the virus die after extended exposure in the Sun and/or in the dirt? Won't the heat from the blast kill the virus?
...
And to answer Reborn's question about Saddam Hussein's Chemical weapons... most of them were pretty basic stuff... mustard gas, sarin, blistering agents... shit that's been around since WWI and WWII.

I have a question...
Since you train ordinance disposal specialists... are you in Afghanistan? Because, don't they change their tactics as allied troops learn to recognize them? I mean, in Iraq, didn't they first hide them in piles of rubble and trash along the roadsides? When we got that figured, they got more innovative and buried them in pot hole in the road... and even formed in curbs.
And if you are in Afghanistan... is it as bad as it sounds like it is?

I don't train EOD, more like they advise me on the changing tactics. I train all new AF officers during their 6week Aerospace Basic course in IED recognition/avoidance/reporting- not disposal- those guys (hats off) are insane! I also train them for CBRNE attacks (Chem, Bio, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosive)- I am currently stateside at an AFBase in the southeast- due to my large fan-following on this site I'd better not say which one.
to your question: Yes. They are constantly changing tactics. As we got more advanced (ITT manufactures jammers for Humvees that detonate or jam "command-initiated" IED's- bombs that are set off w/ cell phones etc), the Taliban becomes more simplified. They use pressure plate IED's constructed of wood and aluminum, and placed under the asphault (they use diesel fuel to arode the pavement, then chunk it up and bury the device in the night). Right now, the most common IED is made from ammonia nitrate (fertilizer) like what McVeigh used in Ok City. It is now banned in Afghan, but the problem is it's readily available in Pakistan.
The Taliban are sitting in mud huts packing this stuff into clay jars. We've tried more armor, but they just make their bombs bigger. It is a constant game of cat n mouse.
And they are very good at playing the game.
Also, most of the EFP's (explosively formed penetrators-new and deadly generation of IED) are machine manufactured in IRAN. That's another story for different thread.

Thanx.
So... with all of that trainning and experience... do you really believe that the Taliban is capable of cultivating, storing, transporting and deploying HIV into I.E.D.s? Do they have the labs and scientists required for the task?
I know they use shit like rusty nails and other scrap as anti-personal shrapnal... but, won't the HIV die when exposed to the heat of the explosive?

I think they're Afghan heroin needles, and how they know that they're infected w/ HIV or hep, I don't know. I might doubt the viability it.
I would defer to bio-scientists to answer the question of viruses surviving the explosion. I know that many biological weapons are delivered via explosive device (ie tactical ballistic missile, bomblet etc), and so the idea that the virus could survive is not as crazy as it sounds. But its so damn hot there, I don't know how it'd survive the day, nevermind the explosion.
Mainly I think its meant to stick the EOD tech when they are trying to uncover/ disarm the bombs. Or act as dangerous shrapnel- like the things you pointed out.
Seems airing your dirty laundry has back fired on you ey mama? Seeing how sending u a pm gets aired out in public, I will now just put it out for all to read for themselves. We can have a pissing match all u want but Im
