Heard it in Boston, was amazing. Awesome song & experience! :D

I went to Boston and while I thought our version was especially great (you are bias to your own concerts)
I listened to two recordings from Youtube and by god.. Release from Boston 5/17/10 WAS epic...

(Best vocals I have ever heard... and lots of Mike's echoey guitar chimes...)

(and no Boom... please forgive me man.. just not on THIS Song)

I challenge anyone to listen to this version and compare it with the famous versions during the 1994 tour..

never thought those would be topped (Chicago's 2003 show came close).. but this is the balls-on jaw dropping best IMO..

The version in KC in 03 wasn't bad either but that was with the whole thunderstorm and lightening experience...you had to be there to get the full feel...But I still think Boston was historic. That entire show was magic. I still can't get over it. lol
I wish I was an alien at home behind the sun.....
    I wanna race..with the sundown..I want a last breath..I don't let out...

As the Glass intro started at the London O2 last year I remember saying to my friend, wouldn't it be amazing if the opened with Release. The rest is history.

I had a hunch they were going to play it, they hadn't played it at any of the other dates so it was pretty much a dead cert, and it was incredible! I think it's pretty safe to say that if they bust out Release at the beginning, you know you're going to get an amazing show!

Seen Release a few times. Probably my favorite opener; depends on the city and venue somewhat. Do yourself a favor and check out Kansas City 2003 for the best Release I have ever witnessed. Stormy night, Outdoor venue, Lightning Crashing across the sky, "Hi Dad" quote from Ed. One of my very favorite Pearl Jam moments in 20 shows.

    agreed..

that is one of my all time favorites!

    almost forgot!

Great post. I always wondered about the openers, how and what is behind the selection of the opener, the band must give it much thought. Auguably... the first song is the most important pick on the set list.

Release seems to be in heavy rotation at the Boston and Manfields shows over the past 10 years. i probably have had it 7+ times, but never experienced.. Sometimes. IMO ...Wash has been a great & relatively recent addition.

Other than 2 weeks ago May 17 (Release), my most memorable opener was April 23, 2003.. DTE at Assembly Hall.

    judge for yourself..

    "Release" from Boston

(song starts about 2:00 minute mark..sure there's some drunken sing along but most of the audio in this clip is Ed.. my favorite parts are from 3:30 thru 5:00 as Ed hits some amazing heights "RE-LEASE MEHE-HE-HEE!"
and the lighting is absolutley perfect with the tempo of the song)

  • The best part I thought of the Boston 2010 version was after the boom of Jeff's first note on bass at the very beginning of Release was when Ed put his head back as if to look up toward's the sky and spread his arms out sort of in a "Jesus Christ Pose" (pardon the pun). It was epic! Send chills through my body. Later

    Agreed..

there's some better video that captures that on youtube but the audio is horrid due to the drunken chorus of the crowd around the taper...

sometimes I appreciate not being on the floor so I can get Ed and the band without "Sully from Medford's" sing along karoke..

i hope not. i want that song more than anything.

Same here. 20 shows, and still NO Release!!

Same for me--- MSG2 was my 20th anniversary show and I still have to see Release live. That and Oceans are my white whales

Your 20th Anniversary show? What does that mean?

  • Sometimes was the best of these, then RVM, then long road and release a distant 4th.

After 17 years, I finally get it... My mind has finally come to understand the genius of this song. Next PJ gig I go to, I hope they open and close with it!
