As the Glass intro started at the London O2 last year I remember saying to my friend, wouldn't it be amazing if the opened with Release. The rest is history.

Release is easy. I took me 40 shows to hear oceans, and I heard release 7 times along the way. I heard Wash 6 times, Long road 4 times, and sometimes only once (and not as an opener, accoustic in boston).

I'm really for them just rotating the 4 traditional openers for EVERY show. (Oceans, Release, Long Road, Sometimes) Any of those songs is a great way to start a show.

Out of 9 shows I have seen Release open 4 times.

Oddly enough I saw Oceans open the first show I was at. Didn't realize how lucky I was as the time.

the last time they played msg before this 2 night gig they opened with Release....im surprised some people that went to these 2 msg shows missed a show last time, and thus the chance to hear it.

1 in 24 shows for me

That is the only MSG show I have ever missed and they played Release. What a killer. They did play it in September of 1998, though, so that was good and it was the last time I've heard Release live. I also saw it in Camden in August of 1998.

Thus, I've heard it twice in 32 shows. I've seen Pearl Jam in Chicago, I've seen them in Boston, I've seen them in San Diego, I've seen them in Vegas. And I've seen Release only twice and it's my favorite song of all time. That is an awful percentage. Makes John very sad. :(

I'm reading all of these posts and thinking you are some unlucky people not getting Release. I've been to 21 (?) shows and thought they openned w/ Release in at least a third of those shows. Checked my set lists and only got it 3 times. Powerful song to make the impression that I thought I got it all of the time.

I had been wanting this one for a long time and got in Indy this year. Actually, PJ really hooked me up as in the three shows I went to I got Oceans, Release and Wash all for the first time. I had seen Long Road twice, Cant Keep once, and all the other shows have been less traditional openers. Now I just need Sometimes and Of The Girl and I will be set.
words seem so out of place.

    Never played in PERTH either!
  • Seen Release a few times. Probably my favorite opener; depends on the city and venue somewhat. Do yourself a favor and check out Kansas City 2003 for the best Release I have ever witnessed. Stormy night, Outdoor venue, Lightning Crashing across the sky, "Hi Dad" quote from Ed. One of my very favorite Pearl Jam moments in 20 shows.

    I am 0-10

My cousin saw it her 1st show. (Roo)
My Buddy saw it his first song (PSU)
  • last 4 gigs I've been to have had as openers:

    RVM
    sometimes
    release
    long road

looking at this thread I've been lucky to have had a range.

Sometimes was the best of these, then RVM, then long road and release a distant 4th.
we're all going to the same place...

12 shows......here are the openers I have had:

    Betterman
    Release (x2)
    Sometimes
    Hard to Imagine
    Wash (x2)
    Of the Girl
    Gonna See My Friend
    Why Go
    Oceans
    Unthought Known

Made it through 10 shows without getting a repeat...pretty impressive run

Now I just need Long Road and Can't Keep

Heard it in Boston, was amazing. Awesome song & experience! :D

I went to Boston and while I thought our version was especially great (you are bias to your own concerts)
I listened to two recordings from Youtube and by god.. Release from Boston 5/17/10 WAS epic...

(Best vocals I have ever heard... and lots of Mike's echoey guitar chimes...)

(and no Boom... please forgive me man.. just not on THIS Song)

I challenge anyone to listen to this version and compare it with the famous versions during the 1994 tour..

never thought those would be topped (Chicago's 2003 show came close).. but this is the balls-on jaw dropping best IMO..
