Are there any better lyrics out there than this track, always loved him but after this Mike is such a legend and such a good man after what was obviously tough times. I mean the first line says it all "underneath this smile lies everything, all my hopes and anger, pride and shame".... Brings a tear to my eye everytime I hear it i got to admit

haha it's not schlock, i just think some of the lyrics are bad. overall, it's a good song. the three guitars on the studio version sound awesome... in other words, it doesn't hold up live.
  • I've always thought Eddie sounds like, extra passionate towards the beginning of this song. Hard to explain but there's something about how he sings that part, it's pretty cool. Good song.

Yea just thought id throw it out there, do agree it doesnt really hold itself live but the studio version brings shivers down my spine....lyrics, lyrics, lyrics !!
Another underrated(if that word can be used in a PJ forum) is I got ID, I was lucky enough to be front row MSG night one and seeing that up close live blew me away, I knew it was a good song but wow !
    Thanks for feedback
  • Love it. The music is positively Zeppelinesque (Mike playing the double neck on the live version is a clear nod to Jimmy Page.)

The lyrics are something special when you understand they come from the perspective of someone trying to face down his inner demons and cope with drug addiction.

Way to go Mike. Way to go Pearl Jam. One of your very best. I dream of seeing the band open a show with this masterpiece some day.

amazing song, excelent lyrics, great way to end the avocado

When I downloaded this wonderful album the night it was available, I took it to Windows Media Player I didn't realize it was the last song...cause it played first (I figured out where I went wrong when I 'highlighted' the list Inside Job was the last one I clicked and therefore made it first...atleast that's what I've come up with lol) and was blown away. I remember resisting listening to any leaks from this album and while the Avo was downloading I decided it was a perfect time to Get Right and strap some headphones on. I listened to the album about 3 times in a row and kept thinking that the way Inside Job ends, it would be better at the end of the album. DOH! Great song!

I love the music and the presentation of Inside job, but I have to agree...
Some lyrics are extra lame with a side of corny.

Also, it's not a good song live. I really wanted them to be able to pull it off live, but I have yet to hear a version (and I've heard dozens) that got close. The disc version has passion, and an entire level they can't reach live.

Solid tune. It was a mood killer but i thought it sounded great in St Lou

It's not Zeppelin-ish in the slightest....

I'm very glad I don't have a critics heart. I guess leave me to my delusions because I thought Inside Job Philly 4 was amazing. Perhaps my vantage point and being able to see the emotion that makes this song one of their best, accounts for this. The connection between each of them to each other and to this song just speaks to who Pearl Jam is. Not a better example for me. It was a highlight of the night.

Yeah, I can see that. I'd consider Zeppelin-ish to be the ultimate compliment, so that works for me on this masterpiece of a song, at the end of this masterpiece of an album.

Absolutely love this song. The version from the Austin City Limits taping was amazing (too bad about the glitch, though). They could play this every night as far as I'm concerned.

Inside Job is by far my favorite song off avocado. And as far as live goes it's one of my favorites. and yes it was a great intro in Vegas 06. Made standing out in the ten club line waiting to get tickets that day in the hot sun well worth it! The mood the intro creates live and Mike on the double, ed's "yea-ah, yea-ah" at the end. just give me about another minute of Mike wailing at the end and it would be a live masterpiece

OK, then how? B/c it's 7 minutes long?

Neither the solo or chord progression are Page-ish in the slightest. Matt's drumming is a different style from Bonzo. Ed sure as hell don't sound like Bob Plant. Jeff doesn't play anything like JPJ.

The first time I heard the song, it reminded me so much of Stairway.

Oh I loved hearing it for sure and rocked out accordingly, but I thought the crowd really got quiet after it for a song or 2.
