Poster question

I was hoping to get some help from someone on here. I bought an EV batman poster from 10C, and want to get it framed. Michaels is having a 40% off custom framing sale good through this saturday. I went in there tonight and the woman who had helped me with the other posters I got framed there is off the rest of the week, so I figured I'd just get it done now and take advantage of the sale price. well, this sale price ends up being $322 something. I was questioning that, and the computer showed the discount and whatever, so I go to pay and my card was denied. To make a long story short, the woman said she would hold it till tomorrow when I could pay. I have realized after much thought that 300 bucks is not the right price after a 40% discount. so if I go back tomorrow and the price isn't figured out, and I decide to wait, how should I store this poster? I do not want to put it back in the tube and I don't know how to store it, like with what and in what and all that. Any advice on what I should do in this situation? Thanks.

and sorry for the length of this post. I just want to make sure I do the right thing.

Go buy a matte cutter for 15 bucks and do it ur self the mats are like 15 bucks and just buy a frame they are so easy i have done several my self it saves u so much in the long run.

I have thought about that, but I am always concerned about the quality of the mats and stuff. I don't want to end up ruining the poster or anything else if what I use isn't like conservation quality or whatever. like acid free and uv glass and stuff. But it's an idea if i can't get the right price anywhere.

i don't like michaels at all. a store opened here at the dartmouth crossing few months ago. had a sale for 40+ percent off custom frames. i go in getting/asking for the cheapest black metal frame, conservation glass, no matte, acid free backboard. it was to be for my ccfa brisbane poster (not that big, pretty small print). total came up to $325 cdn (without taxes). "I BEG YOUR PARDON!" almost shouting at the clerk. that's after the 40% discount. it was a total rip off.

i say check other places near you. a local mom & pap's store, kent's frame shop, etc.. get price quotes and see some samples inhouse.

or do what i do. but a few of these for the time being! :)

    First, don't go to Michaels.
Second, check out expressobeans.com for framing info.
Third, to store your print just keep it flat between some brown mailing paper, or plain paper and safe from sun or kids and pets. ;)
Framing it well will cost some $ depending how many mats, but it shouldn't be that high. :)

I just got my EV Chicago poster framed at a local framing shop for $120 CDN (no tax) with UV resistant glass. Black mat, black frame, v-groove in the mat.

thanks all of you. to answer a previous question, i picked out a metal frame nothing special, and two mats..black and orange. i chose masterpiece glass which is the uv resistant and whatever else it is...glass from michaels. I had my lollapalooza poster and recently my summerfest poster framed at michaels and got 50% and 60% off when i did those. i think there is a little frame shop somewhere around where i live, so i might just go check them out soon. when i store this poster until i get it framed, should i put it in a box or under something heavy? hopefully i can just go get it from michaels and bring it to this other place and get it done right away, but i may not be able to.

my local framer charges about $120 for a black metal frame, single matte, uv glass and acid free backing.....for a double matte the price goes to $180 or so....you are getting ripped off and should try someplace else
  • I have never paid more than $150 for any of my framed posters. And they are very well done!!

Here in Perth, Australia I found the best framer, had three prints done so far, 05 Gorge, 06 Gorge and DC all Klausens and with frames 2 or 3 mattes conservation glass and acid free backing all up for the 3 was $450, pretty stoked with the price and the quality. One framer wanted 350 just for the 05 Gorge, just about fell over.

I think the lady in Michaels didn't know what she was doing. I just had 6 framed there for $650 I think. The most for one i beieve was the Kenyon with 2 matees and UV glass, it was about $300 before the discount. They always have 50% discounts too, once in awhile 60%

I got my EV batman poster and Sydney3 framed the other day, and EV cost me $322 Australian. A couple of months ago that would of been about $220-340 U,S but our dollar has plummeted and it would now be $500ish. Wowzer

As others have said, Mom and Pop framers are the way to go rather than Michaels. I had my Atlantic City framed with black solid wood, two mattes, spacers to give the image depth, conservation glass and acid free backing, all done for just over $200, and that was a larger poster than most. Although that doesnt sound cheap, it probably would have been a $400-500 bill at Michaels. Their "discounts" are rip-offs, their workers aren't often concerned with taking great care of your print or the frame job, and I've heard horror stories of people getting their piece back without acid-free materials. Compare prices at local shops for the best deal in terms of price and quality.

Another idea that others here have mentioned is buying the glass separate from a local glass shop and either having your framer put it all together or doing it yourself. Should save some extra money as well.

After much thought, I decided to go get my poster back from Michaels since I didn't pay for it yet. I found this other place around here...the frame shoppe or something like that. I'm going to go check them out tomorrow. I guess i never realized how much of an expense Michaels was. i still think that woman had no clue what she was doing.. oh well. thanks for all the help. I'll post pics when I get this thing finished.
