I don't know how anyone could argue border towns/high immigration towns aren't a strain on the schools. Just 1 aspect to consider is many have co-teachers to help with ELL students. Essentially 2 full time teachers in 1 classroom. Not in every class, but maybe 20% of the classes. So where schools are already struggling for money and funding, they have to hire 20% extra teachers to language support in the classroom. There are many other factors that are involved as well.
I'm not saying sny of them are bad or a waste of money, but it is expensive for schools to run with heavy language barriers. And they are also often lower income districts to begin with that already struggle financially.Post edited by mace1229 on0 -
mace1229 said:In a more serious note, I don’t understand the argument of walls don’t always work. It reminds me of what I keep seeing in the gun thread. Someone points out how a gun law didn’t work and the response is almost always a sarcastic “it doesn’t work 100% so why even try.” But for a few years we keep seeing that example and pictures being shared of people climbing a border wall.
Rarely is anything 100%. Do you never lock your bike up because it can be cut? Do you not wear a mask because it’s not 100%? But walls do work. I bet most people here have one in their backyard to keep people out and things in. It doesn’t mean it can’t be climbed, but it deters some people from trying. I mean what happened after January 6? They put up a fence around the Capitol.
Environmental concerns and costs are valid points to consider. I’m just not buying the it can be climbed argument.
Are Trump Terrorists climbing over the fence at the capital like the are at the border?
Are Trump Terrorists digging tunnels to get under the fence at the capital like they are at the border?
Are Trump Terrorists able to infiltrate the capital buy flying a plane to it or by shipping themselves by boat like the vast majority of drugs that are smuggled into this country?
I've got a fence around my backyard. Is that the same thing as a multi billion dollar wall too?
Having a physical border appears to be a good idea in certain places and not such a good idea in other places. But Trump's idea of putting it all across the border is a costly mistake.
Return On Investment. It's just not worth the money and the lie that Mexico was going to pay for it should not be swept under the rug. The reason he kept repeating that ad nauseum was because he knew the cost was ridiculously high for something the smugglers know they could easily get around.
And the environmental concerns are valid, agreed. I think that is a huge point to consider, and obviously another reason why the capitol fence or the fence in my backyard is not a good comparison.
From a political standpoint, I actually think it's good for Biden to have this "problem" so early into his term as opposed to it popping up next year. Gives his administration time to fix it before the mid terms. And with his approval rating a whopping 14ish points above his predecessor, it is clear the American people have a much higher degree of faith in him.www.myspace.com0 -

I said costs and environment are a legitimate counter argument to the wall. Just don’t say a wall can be climbed as the main argument to not have one. Of course they can be climbed. But that’s a dumb argument. Cost and environments factors are better reasons to debate the wall.Post edited by mace1229 on0 -
Here in Canada we've had lots of legal immigration over the last 10+ years. No one talks about it, but it's generally because of the population hump. IE how many people of the Boomer generation there are. There were way less people following the boomers, so it was going to put huge stress on social programs. We've had both a right wing and now a left/center government ramp the shit out immigration to artificially inflate our younger population. That part makes sense, but the rapid increase of population seems to have had a big impact on housing... sigh..0

https://news.yahoo.com/ap-source-biden-lifting-trump-201422075.htmlBiden said he received additional information that led him to sign the emergency presidential determination setting the cap at 62,500.
“It is important to take this action today to remove any lingering doubt in the minds of refugees around the world who have suffered so much, and who are anxiously waiting for their new lives to begin," Biden stated before signing the emergency presidential determination.
62,500 is actually near the amount of homeless in California. And there’s over 500,000 homeless nation-wide. So the people that have suffered because other countries have failed them get new lives. And the people that are suffering because our country failed them continue to live in the streets. The homeless in the U.S. should just migrate south of the border, and then come back seeking asylum. Then maybe our government would give a fuck about them.
