Pearl Jam's No Binocular Policy

edited May 2010 in The Porch
I think it was 2006 when 10c/PJ came out and said binoculars were not allowed. I found it interesting that Low-D video is ok, non-professional cameras are ok and binoculars are not ok. I never understood it. Back in 06, a few people have speculated that binoculars could be used as a weapon. But couldn't anything including cameras and the like? Back then, the response was simply "not ok" and no reason was stated. I've taken my binoculars to many other concerts. So this seems like a PJ specific thing. One question is whether that policy is still in effect. And I guess my other question is that if the no binocular policy is still in effect, why are binoculars singled out as not-ok. Really to satisfy my curiosity. I'm wondering what someone can do, or has done with binoculars, that made someone ban them. By the way, I'll respect and comply with the policy. But I think knowing why they are banned would nice. Just curious.

EDIT/UPDATE: NO-BINOCULAR POLICY HAS CHANGED AS PER 10C, "Ten Club does not have a binocular policy but the venue might. You’ll want to check with them to be sure. -10c" THANKS 10C!

It's funny, at the Hollywood Bowl, they rent binoculars. Right next to the place where they rent seat cushions. When I saw Rush at the Hollywood Bowl, I brought my own binoculars but could have rented them if I had wanted to. Cameras and recording devices were not allowed.

when i joined here back in 06, this guy came on and was enraged that his binoculars were confiscated in santa barbara...at the time i couldn't believe someone could get so upset about nothing...4 years later that guy's complaint seems tame compared to what is being complained about nowadays :lol:

Arrg, now you'll know who I am. Hanging off the Bruins banners, waving my spyglass and shouting "Avast Ye Mateys!"

I just hope they don't confiscate my monocle.

I've had mine confiscated, and let me tell you - it's NOT pleasant!
  • It does seem silly, but I'm not going to complain. I'm just grateful they allow cameras, I don't want to bitch about the other and get the camera rule changed (besides, although it might not be over a 3X zoom on most cameras, zoom in on your camera). Also, I've did binocular's at concerts, I found them to be more cumbersome than helpful, I would eventually stop using them and just listen to the music, rather than trying to keep focus on a person a couple of hundred feet away). So, maybe it's not as bad as it sounds and as another post pointed out about some places renting them, it's probably more of a money making thing for the venues rather than a staunch PJ rule.
    Hearts and thoughts they fade....
    fade away...

I am at peace with my lust.....for Eddie.

    Kat,
I mean this in the most respectful way, but if someone is inquiring about the purpose of a show policy, a legitimate question in my opinion, why would you opt to make this comment, and leave no reason as to why this policy is in place? It further suggests that there is either a weak, or nonexistent, purpose for this policy, and if I were the OP, I would feel like you were delivering a slap in the face - yes, I'm here, no, I won't answer you.

i think the only reason they dont allowed couse of the light, the lights hit on them, and go back on stage.the same policy we have in my work, couse glasses make problems with lights, and go back to canopys and other people working.

I am not underrating Kat's position/authority at 10C but she doesn't know all the answers to all these questions - an analogy would be a parent to a child - "Mommy why doesn't Pearl Jam allow us to bring binoculars at their shows?" "Well son I don't know, other people make the rules and it is mommy's job to help everyone follow them."

Besides isn't it great to hear from the Mods just being posters like the rest of us and not always have to be the authority all the time

It's an honor to have Kat post in one of my threads; a post which isn't a reference to the posting guidelines or an admonishment of someone's behavior. She's been about the best Mod I've encountered and I've been here since after Binaural on that old index-looking message pit where people were requesting a rarities album for 2 years. A real sweetheart. So a little fun at my expense is fine. And I appreciate the reference to the 10c info link. I'll try that and report back here. ("You have the right to free speech, unless of course you're dumb enough to actually try it")

Thanks for the support, CantKeepMeHere, but my PM was not so much a nice note about Kat's awesomeness, rather an attempt to explain to her that I did not mean to offend, and an explanation that what I tried to communicate to her was likely misconstrued. I don't feel what I wrote was wrong, but reading it over, I realize my tone was possibly inappropriate, and very easily could have lent itself to being misinterpreted.

I sent a benign worded inquiry to the link Kat shared, let's see what comes in return.

I have a real nice pair of binoculars which are made for marine use. I'm an avid boater. These have built-in stability, large cups that fit over your eyes, incredible light absorbtion, wide view. They're amazing. Weren't cheap but when on the water, out in the ocean, they're great to have. The secondary benefit being concerts. They really pull you in by 50 rows. Given my 10c number being 251,xxx, it would have been great to have them. If I won the lottery, I'd just run them back to the car.

It does seem silly, but I'm not going to complain.

The camera rule has changed so they are no longer allowed. This is a new band policy, not a standard rule for the venues I went to this year (Columbus and Cleveland). So now they do not allow video or still pictures.

Unless you have an Iphone, then you can take pictures and record whatever you want.
