ive been to 30 shows, none of the philly shows last year, the best show i think i ever saw was state college 2003 in pa. that was an amazing show. they should play there again, but maybe never will
Yes it is...
I wasn't planning to go to that one and decided at 8pm to drive over there (I live 15 mins away). Got a ticket outside from a scalper for $10 and got inside with 15 mins to spare.
That was my bonus show!
Philly 3 was great because I decided to take that night off, give away my tickets (5th row right in front of Mikey) and take my girl to go see Thievery Corporation instead.
Ouch, sorry to hear. I have to give you props though for treating your girl right.
thanks for the props but it was a no brainer. i had been at the first two shows and was going to the last show and really needed a night off. i'm glad people think show 3 was awesome.
treating your girl right = +99999
would i have done the same thing= Yes
Thievery Corporation =Who the F R they?
Seriously, were in a club w/ like 6 other people who weren't at PJ or watching the World Series?
not critizising, i took my wife/girlfriend @ the time to see bette midler at msg 1999 while the yankees were playing game 3 against atlanta, but we were up 2-0 at the time, Thievery corp? I never even heard of them? i hope you marry this girl and i hope she makes it worth it in time, but educate her, on=cool :ugeek:
I'm always surprised by this. I was at all four Philly shows, and while I find it hard to rank them, I think Philly 1 was my favorite. As I think I wrote that night, the band sounded so good that I even enjoyed hearing my two least-favorite PJ songs ("Unemployable" and "Green Disease"). I was psyched that they played "Ghost," which in my opinion is a very underrated song. I gained new appreciation for "All Those Yesterdays," and I was absolutely blown away by "Immortality." I still cannot believe that nobody posted a video of THAT to YouTube.
I felt like crap at Philly 3; we had non-10C tickets for that show, and, um, I'm afraid of heights. I know that is affecting my take on Philly 3.
All those who seek to destroy the liberties of a democratic nation ought to know that war is the surest and shortest means to accomplish it.
its way too subjective to say that it was the best ever, in the upper ranks of the shows, no doubt. for the shows ive seen, its a toss up between this, wachovia 05, the vic and gorge 1 in 06. all were great for their own reasons, imo
I forgot about Philly 2005 -- i wasnt there, but its one of my favorite boots and, IMO, an epic upper-tier show

I originally started the following thread for kicks on 10/21/09 in anticipation of the Philly shows under the topic heading: Pre-Rank the 4 Philly Shows. Check the archives if you are in doubt. Not bad, eh?
Just for fun and pure speculation, predict in order how good the 4 Philly shows will be. Here is my order and why:
1. 10/30- Band will be fired up for the second wave and have stored up energy from a night off.
2. 10/27- Opening night. Band will want to make an impact right out of the gate...and they will!
3. 10/31- Closing night. Will be special, but band will have shot much of their load from the night before and not quite be able to achieve that altitude again.
4.10/28- Band will down shift a bit, to pace themselves for what is to follow.[/quote]
out of 30+ something shows philly 3 is in the top 3 if not number 1.
the crowd was def one of the best i've seen at any concert! EVERYONE was vibin out.

the only complaint i have about the show is that they opened up with "Gonna see my friend" if it was release, long road,HTI,etc i wouldnt have to think about it twice being the best show ive seen.
Do you guys remember just how crazy loud we all were during In Hiding?!?!?!?!?! The boot doesn't really capture it, but during the main chorus especially the 2nd and 3rd time on the boot you can't really hear the band and barely Eddie - That is why Philly Night 3 was the "best" or should we say strongest of the 4 nights and it sounds like we all agree the best show ever, well there are a few of those...

i think all 4 philly shows were otherwordly. however, 3 and 4 were the best. it's very close between those two. anyways night 3 was so special because the setlist was ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE. song after song i was either in shock or super happy they played it. honestly its a setlist built to PERFECTION, in my opinion. It is as much as you can hope for. on top of that, the crowd was fucking awesome and everyone was so into it. everyone around me knew every song, even hold on which got it's first ever debut. just a magical night all around.

when i think about philly 3 i think about a crowd that was coming off of an off night hungry for a phenomenal show...just like the band. alot of us ate together the night before and went to karaoke but all ready for the last two nights. alot of rumors for night 4 and almost everyone was looking past friday until they hit the stage. gonna see my friend hit everyone hard and the show immediately took off with ed talking just two songs in about how important these nights were.
the set itself was one of the greatest main sets ive ever seen/heard. when i think about epic shows i dont thinkg about quantity. quantity was night 4, quantity was state college (aside from porch, one of the more overrated shows the band has played...it was damn good, but more long than anything else...also see: satans bed). when i think about epic sets/energy/crowd i think about jones beach 3 00, buffalo 03, philly 05, grand rapids 06 and most msg shows. philly 3 was all of those.

add to those a beautiful off he goes, tight versions of in my tree, force of nature and present tense. jeremy with the strings was just one of those moments that overwhelmed you. the song isnt a rarity and you could say its PJ "for dummies" song. but that night, jeremy was a whole different animal. sonic reducer and baba were off the charts that night too!
add to that a crowd that got hungrier and hungrier and louder and louder. the constant feeding off of band and back to the crowd was amazing. IN HIDING will be one of the single most talked about moments of any pearl jam show EVER!
night 4 was special for all of the right reasons. i loved alot of the rarities/oddities. it was a big long party. but i would put it between "state college long" and something like "buffalo 03 classic".
great read in this thread. you guys have me salivating over hearing this boot, sounds like it was awesome.
I think most of us can agree on at least 5-10 "upper tier" shows that the band have played and thats as close as we will ever get to determining a best ever. I like to think I have been in attendance for at least a couple of em, but every show is just insane to be there. every. damn. time.
p.s. - i was relistening to DC 08, and shitballs, that was a HELLUVA show....with me?
Van '98, Sea I+II '00, Sea '01, Sea II '02, Van '03, Gorge, Van, Cal, Edm '05, Bos I+II, Phi I+II, DC, SF II+III, Port, Gorge I+II '06, DC, NY I+II '08, Sea I+II, Van, Ridge , LA III+IV' 09, Indy '10, Cal, Van '11, Lond, Van, Sea '13, Memphis '14, RRHOF '17, Sea I+II '18, Van I+II, Vegas I+II '24
So there have been plenty of Philly threads but I'm happy now all the love for night 3 can be found all in one thread. I agree with just about everything that has been said here. I still have to get the boots for nights 1 and 2 so I can enjoy those shows too.
Can't see how this could be anywhere near "the best show ever" - I wasn't there, but the band sound very sloppy and unfocussed on the bootleg. It might've been a good experience, but the band were playing well below their normal standard.
Whatever "the best show ever" might be, I'd wager it happened between 1993 and 1998.
They did seem to be particularly tight that night... and the set-list was just so much more cohesive than Halloween (which felt like a long trip more than anything)... also being the lead up to a show that had so much buzz surrounding it, the crowd fed off the anticipation and the vibe of the four night run itself.
I haven't been able to get the boots yet... but how does 10/30 sound on the bootleg?... i haven't been this excited to listen to a boot in a long while.
Wachovia 05 -- Irving Plaza 06 -- East Rutherford II 06 -- The Vic 07 -- Lollapalooza 07 -- Camden I,II 08 -- D.C. 08 -- MSG I,II 08 -- Chicago I,II 09, Spectrum II,III,IV 09 -- SNL 2010 -- Cleavland 2010 -- MSG I 2010

i put night 1 and 4 above 3, but it could be 'cause i was behind the stage for night 3. all 4 shows were incredible...if any one of them was a "one night stand" show they would all be top tier, but being at all 4 makes the shows all seem kind of like one (long) amazing show. it's so hard to pick my favorite, it all seems to run together for me. i can't wait for my box set.
