And I like it when you rub my head and call me daddy..... Or was that you???

we're still exploring all the variables.

Hey! I'm Samantha (but call me Sam) from New York, and I'm a 17 year old senior in high school (soon to be freshman in college which scares/excites me!).

I've always had a love for music-- my dad brought me up on The Who, Hendrix, The Stones, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, etc-- but I've never had a band affect me nearly as much and as deeply as Pearl Jam has.

Sometimes I wish that I could have been a teenager in the early '90s instead of a baby/little kid, but really, Pearl Jam came at the perfect time for me, which happened to be May of 2008. I was 15 at the time, going through some big changes with friends, and I think really starting to find out who and I and who I wanted to become.

Anyway, May 2008: I heard a little bit of Jeremy on some TV program and everything about the song literally stopped me in my tracks-- it grabbed my attention and totally captivated me. I immediately looked up the song and fell in love with it. Then I got Ten, started to explore more, and the rest is history!!

It may sound corny to others, but you all understand: Pearl Jam has really changed my life with their music. When a song can help you express yourself and your feelings in ways that you maybe can't on your own, it's an amazing thing. And when a song can help you better understand yourself, it's so completely powerful. The feeling I get when I listen to Given to Fly, or Leash, or Present Tense--or any song-- it's just the most awesome thing!!

MSG I & II will be my first PJ shows and I couldn't be more excited, thrilled, anxious, happy, etcetc!!!! I'm just gonna soak it all in and rock out hard! I know it will be the experience of a lifetime and that I'll never forget it!!

    This. Band. Rocks.

Wow, Sam, I just loved that story. And how exciting for you, your first shows. It gave ME chills thinking about how exciting that is for you. I remember my first show back in 1998, I was literally on a natural high for a week straight. It was mindblowing.

Enjoy yourself and welcome to "our" world. You will never be the same. And that's a good thing.

    Hi to everyone!
Although I am new to the 10C, I am not new to PJ and their music. Been a fan since Ten when I heard the first notes of Alive. I have been "lurking" here on the boards and checking things out- but this is my first post.
I have only seen the band once before (yes, I need to catch up!).. but I am going to Hartfords show tomorrow-and I am too excited!
    See everyone at the show!
  • Hello my name is Noel. I’m 39 and I really dig Pearl Jam.

After reading the wide spectrum of stories, I decided to attempt to make it wider.

Originally from Queens, NY, my music preference in the ‘80s to mid 90’s, was for the most part, the skillful lyricists from the east coast Hip Hop scene. (Eric B & Rakim, Public Enemy, KRS-One, etc. you know… the opposite of today’s rap scene) I wanted to help spread that movement to Tampa, so I was about 20 yrs old running an underground Hip Hop nightclub. On a typical night the place was packed with hip hop fans, thugs and wannabe thugs.

Now understand this, while growing up in my circles, I was taught that there is nothing remotely good about Rock music. How sad is that? It took my new girlfriend at the time to introduce me to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Doors, etc. I couldn’t believe all my peers were so wrong.

So one night, at the moment when I had decided to open my mind to a brand new genre of music, in the middle of a strictly hip hop crowd with speakers blasting, my girlfriend makes her way to me through this ruffneck crowd in line, hands me a cassette tape and says, “You have to hear this band.”

I give up my doorman position and agreed to follow her to my grey Camaro. And as the full moon shined off my Camaro’s hood, she popped in the cassette, pushed play, and I heard the beginnings of ‘Release Me.’ A little background….I have father issues …Anyway, this song connected with me in a way no other song, in any genre, would ever. I had to know more.

Over the years I found so many things in their music that connected with my current life situations. I became an uber fan, even more than my girlfriend. Our first show in ’96 cemented my loyalty when a group of us rented a broken down RV for a road trip to Ft. Lauderdale. We got there and were blown away as to who these other fans were. It was like a family reunion with strangers.

Things would have been so much different had I not met my girlfriend at the time. She opened my eyes to the world. And for that, amongst other reasons, we have been together every day for 21 years. (Married last 7 years)

Just yesterday, I was driving my 2yr old son and 4yr old daughter to her soccer practice. My daughter says, “Dada, can you put on some Pearl Jam?” (Her favorite is Unthought Known). They both would rock out dancing in their car seats listening to PJ.

I thought….If they have already learned what took me 20 years to learn…they are way ahead of me already. Then I thought …maybe I’m guilty of indoctrination…..then I went back to my originally thought… and it felt safe there… so I’m going with that one.

Jeremy has been my fav song since it came out and I loved PJ, but my friends used to bag me out over it. So................... I started to listen to the crap they like (think BSB and other shitty boy bands) . Then in 1998 i got back into them and suddenly all of the boys at school thought i was cool because i actually had taste in music. I never got to go see them when they came down under for various reasons and was so excited last year when my DH (who claims not to be a PJ fan) bought me tickets to the Sydney show. I remember the moment i seen the guys walk onto the stage and burst into tears. I was so excited and sang every song word for word. Apparently I haven't shut up about the concert since then and make sure that i listen to them everyday. I always start my day with Jeremy and end it with Jeremy, I also only listen to Corduroy on the way to work. Currently DH and I are going through a bit of a hard time trying to have children and i have found PJ to be a great source of inspiration through their songs and a great distraction, which helps take my mind off our problems.
