    I think many people who saw these pictures gained empathy, perspective, wonder, scientific insight. But empathy is probably the biggie. Photographs are able to speak to us of the experiences of others in ways that news reports cannot.

    before i looked through i had guessed that tienenman square, the afghan girl, and the flag at iwo jima would be on there.

    yeah, like the Tienenman Square photo is fucking iconic... another crazy thing is how the guy disappeared. Still he had the courage to stand up like that is amazing.

    ever seen the video? i saw the flaming lips live a few years back and during one of their songs they had the video of the execution looped on a huge screen at the back of the stage.

    I just ran across the really interesting story of this picture and the woman in it. Turns out she was only 32 years old, and the story that has been told about her isn't really accurate.
