Maybe I'll post on the AET. I guess it's not just the politically-minded folks who would be interested. Sometimes I forget about the other forums. :)

    wow great article scb.
#25 is one of my all time favorites.Sharbat Gula (Pashto: شربت ګله, literally "Flower Sherbet") I have abunch of old Nat Geo's that were handed down to me and I have that issue. The identity of the Afghan Girl remained unknown for over 17 years. Steve McCurry( Photographer)and a crew travled back to afghanistan to find her and after several failed attempts they finally did by using using biometric technology which matched her iris patterns to those of the photograph with almost full certainty.

Interesting. I hadn't heard about the biometric iris matching bit. Here is an interesting National Geographic follow-up story from when they found her again and here is a video to go along with it, in case anyone's interested. Here's the picture of her as an adult:

Wasn't the photo of the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima a re-enactment?

It was. The photographer wasn't there to catch the first raising. Still iconic though, if not spontaneous.

what the fuck have those pictures changed?
they only tell me that we still love to be at war with anyone over oil, religion and money.
they tell me that we still live under a murderous government which gets our innocent killed, while our armies murder the innocent in other countries.
    what has changed?
i often ask myself why we can't have peace, instead we are constantly at war.
    sadly, i know the answer.
    peace is free.
and war is a very big business.
and we as a nation, as a species, do very little to change that.
i look at those pictures and think of how i will teach my children why war, death, and murder happen so much in our every day lives.
    when will we change?

Yes,"changed the world" is not really accurate. Had a "significant impact" is probably a more legitimate claim. But I enjoyed seeing them anyway. Especially the Ansel Adams photograph. Thanks for posting!

And on that note, didn't they find the couple kissing in Times Square recently?
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

That is a solid selection of photos. It was interesting to read that the photographer regretted taking the picture of the general executing the Viet Cong man. I'm glad I've never had to go to war . . .

Only thing missing was a deep-space photo from the Hubble telescope.

I think when it is said "pictures (or images) that have changed the world", it doesn't necessarily mean in the literal sense, but in how humans in general view the world we live in. No, it may not change a situation instantly, but it can and has started a revolution just by showing the general public the truth.

we won't ever change. we will get worse until we are extinct. and then the earth and animals will thrive on their own. assuming of course, there still IS an earth after we are through with it.

uhhh ... i can't recall all the pictures but the one with the naked girl in vietnam being napalmed was a huge turning point in the public conscience which ultimately led to the withdrawal of troops from there ... granted americans still like invading other countries but it had an impact then ... and some of those pictures of nature keyed the beginnings of the environmental movement ...

but i do see your point in the grand scheme of things - we haven't made significant progress on a lot of the issues depicted in the pictures ...

I think many people who saw these pictures gained empathy, perspective, wonder, scientific insight. But empathy is probably the biggie. Photographs are able to speak to us of the experiences of others in ways that news reports cannot.

yeah, like the Tienenman Square photo is fucking iconic... another crazy thing is how the guy disappeared. Still he had the courage to stand up like that is amazing.

I just ran across the really interesting story of this picture and the woman in it. Turns out she was only 32 years old, and the story that has been told about her isn't really accurate.
