As for the songs - when they were played they sounded great. Some awesome gems in there - Kick out the Jams!!! Alive was epic - Mike's solo went on forever while Ed jumped into the photo pit and ran around high-diving people. It sounded from the pre-set guitar check that they were going to play You Are (the tech was running Stone's guitar through the fx) but it never materialized - part of the missing 15 minutes perhaps? Lol After people on the Porch had been asking for it, Better Man had Save It For Later tagged.
Plus, after me saying they should open with Lukin - because who would see that coming?) it was the first PJ song they played...introduced with "let's play a little jazz."
And as a basketball treat for Jeff, Emeka Okafor was there (random celeb spotting moment)
Awesome show - Kick out the Jams, motherfucker!
And a little dash of Tremor Christ to boot
As for the band, Mike was having a blast on stage. He was running all over the place, interacting with the crowd in front of him and just really seemed to be having fun. They really all seemed to be having a good time. Eddie went off on BP, telling them that instead of sending all their sons and daughters to camps and beaches this summer, there was a nice beach down here that they needed to be cleaning.
Cant wait for Hartford.

Anybody know if we will be getting a bootleg offering?
Does PJ typically release boots from festivals?
Not sure this is completely accurate. I have seen several big name acts at Jazz Fest and have never seen a Saturday headliner finish 15 minutes early. In fact, one year Dave Matthews played until 7:30.
Thanks for all the info
But what you describe above happens before EVERY show. For some reason, Stone's guitar tech runs that every time.
The whole world will be different soon the whole world will be RELIEVED

Nice to see those greek and izrael flags there tho!
It's hard to imagine now, but during grunge rock's early '90s heyday, Pearl Jam was often dismissed as pretty-boy pop poseurs. On Saturday at the New Orleans Jazz Fest, Eddie Vedder and company delivered an exhilarating set that reiterated why they now rank among rock's finest live bands.
Wearing a short-sleeve plaid shirt over a "Mr. Bill Show" T-shirt, Vedder was the genial everyman rock star, his voice undiminished. Facing one of the largest, densest and youngest crowds to assemble at the Acura Stage in recent memory, he addressed fans in the distance: "I can't get closer, but we can play louder."
From my vantage point 100 yards deep on the field, Pearl Jam was plenty loud, and plenty clear. Every nuance of the musicians' interplay, from Jeff Ament's robust electric upright bass on "Nothing Man" to the nimble give-and-take of guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready, was audible. There was much to savor in those details.
The thrills came early and often. After getting their bearings with the opening cover of The Byrds' "So You Want to Be a Rock 'n Roll Star," they bore down on "Corduroy," powered by drummer Matt Cameron. Multiple sunburst refrains broke open in "Given to Fly." They beefed up a raging "Even Flow" with bonus guitar solos, but still maintained the spirit of the original arrangement.
Gossard and McCready swapped well-constructed riffs on "Down" and elsewhere. Gossard windmilled through the big finish of "Better Man." McCready nailed his solo in an epic "Alive," then extended it as Vedder hopped off stage to meet-and-great the folks down front.
Vedder recalled how, in November 1993, a Decatur Street brawl earned him a trip to Orleans Parish Prison. "There's a lot of people here. I can't be the only one who's had the great pleasure of spending a night in a New Orleans jail."
That night he learned that, if you have enough money for your bail and someone else's, "you'll never see a happier 85-year-old toothless man."
His stint in the pokey aside, Vedder noted, the band has enjoyed some good times here. The 1994 album "Vitalogy" was partially recorded at Daniel Lanois' former Kingsway Studio on Esplanade Avenue. In honor of that visit, they knocked off that album's squalling "Tremor Christ."
Vedder greeted members of the Louisiana National Guard and other troops watching the show in Iraq and Afghanistan via a live video and audio feed. He thanked them for their "valiant work in extreme conditions...I wish you'd break down and have a beer. You've earned it."
The singer mounted his soapbox only once: To chastise British Petroleum for the oil polluting the Gulf of Mexico. Vedder suggested the children of company executives should vacation on the Louisiana coast this summer. "Send your sons and daughters, BP, to clean up your f
mess." (Imagine the awkwardness had the blown oil rig in the Gulf belonged to Jazz Fest title sponsor Shell.)
With that, Vedder and his bandmates got back to business with early anthem "Daughter." On Pearl Jam's more recent, uneven, albums, hooks and melodies are sacrificed for a full-bore attack. At Jazz Fest, they flirted with that punkish spirit on "Comatose" and "Supersonic." A final thrash through the MC5's "Kick Out the Jams" brought it all home.
Their only misstep was a sin of omission -- they omitted the last 20 minutes of their allotted set time. But the previous hour-and-40 minutes left little doubt that Pearl Jam, at peak form, has few peers.

Its not strange for Jazz fest because there are a ton of "after shows" all over NO. Fest all day, grab a bite, then party all night at the after shows.

So I've since been told... prickteasers... I love that song.
This was my 7th PJ show since 2005, it was a banger, I got treated to a few songs I haven't heard before, notably tremor Christ, nothingman, supersonic, kick out the jams (awesome cover), just breathe, and rock n roll star.
The opening was a little bit odd. Though a strong opener, there were a lot of people around me shaking there heads... It even took me a verse to realize what the cover was... But definitely a rare treat, I don't think anyone could have predicted that as an opener.. And straight into lukin!! Sweetness. I was actually surprise d at how many people around me were looking around confused until they broke into corduroy... Corduroy was great, I love that song, listen to it every day... However there was a point before the solo where the band was out of sync, matt took control as usual and put them back in order.
Other than that, no real awkwardness I the band, no rust on the fret boards like there was in Toronto last year. There were a few techical glitches, mike fiddled with his equipment before starting the evenflow solo, and Eddie's microphone let go atleast 3 or 4 feedback screeches, but all sounded pretty good for the first show of the tour.
The even flow solo was nailed, perfect. Down was just awesome, as always. A lot of people didn't know the sog where I was, but got really into it. In my tree was great... It's been 5 years since I last heard them play it, and the opening verse could have been a little better musically (it was really just matt banging out the beat and Eddie singing) but I loved it. It was great to hear it again.
Ed's voice was awesome, it sounded great. Not anywhere near as worn out as it sounded last year at ACL. Stone was rockin out as usual... I couldn't see boom unfortunately, he was blocked from my view by an equipment stack...but I know he was there... His b3 sounded great on unthought known.
All in all, I'm glad I made the trip, it was a great show. The closing was a bit odd, I was definitely expecting the usual encore.. And it's been 2 years since I've heard yellow Ledbetter, so I was kind of hoping for that, but getting treated to kick out the jams was great. For the record though, I lot of people haven't mentioned the fact that the band did start almost 10 minutes early... So they did punch in a good hour and fifty minutes.
As side notes, I was very dissapointed that I didn't get a poster. I didn't really like the jazzfest posters, and had my tube in hand looking for a gem when I got there, only to be dissapointed. However seeing the poster on bk's website, it looks awesome, and I will have an AP I my possession before long.
Also, despite the ugliness of the lone PJ shirt at the merchant booth, believe it or not, it sold out at $35 a pop. When I was exiting I noticed that they had even sold the ones that they had hung up 25 feet about the stand.
All in all, great show, great trip.... I am looking forward to Boston and Hartford though... After my last 2 shows being festival dates I need a real PJ show.

The connection with the troops was a little iffy. They put them up on the big screen a number of times, and Eddie had a monitor set up by his mic so he could see them. He said he had a good friend fighting in Afghanistan, and it appeared as if that guy was in a room on the other end of a telephone so they could communicate. However, it also appeared as if there was a lengthy delay, so they only attempted one
conversation, and it didn't go as smoothly as hoped (because of the delay)... at one point Ed was talking to the guy, and he was on the big screen punching numbers into his phone (trying to call through, I imagine), obviously unaware he was being spoken to. Ed did dedicate Daughter to his friend's daughter, which was nice (as long as you ignore the lyrics of the song lol). They brought out some troops' family members before the show and introduced them to the crowd, which was cool.
All in all it was an awesome idea that didn't quite go as smoothly as planned - but it would be cool if they tried it again sometime.
I forgot to mention - the group they were broadcasting to was the 256th Infantry Brigade, so while talking to them Ed introduced the band as "the 250-Pearl Jam" or something like that.

I heard in '08 in DC and last year in Philly. They still play it.
