This spill happened 1 week ago. They have had one week to do something about it, yet only got moving once it came near shore. They never ignited it, like they talked about, while it was out way off-shore. I've been watching this story as every one else for an entire week, but it was not big news until now. Who the fuck is in charge here?? The Coast Guard failed when they confirmed there was no leak shortly before the leak happened so who's fault is it and where are all the oil fans when it needs to be cleaned up??

Where the Hell is Palin now? Spill Baby Spill.

If there was ever a reason to switch to renewables on a national scale, the time would be now, with the coupling of this oil spill and the Massey Coal mine deaths and the corruption following it.

To think that they weren't doing anything about it until now in ridiculous. They have been working around the clock on this mess and they have been burning long before it reached shore. It is sad all the damage this is going to create, but while everybody is bitching about drilling and complaining about how much money is made in the oil business try living your life without it. We all use oil and would have a hard time surviving without it. I watched a show on TLC once where they showed what the world would be like if we ran out of oil....it wasn't pretty. With that said, I hope they come up with a solution to keep this from happening again. Something good can come out of every tragedy. When I was doing linework for a living every accident or error created another safety regulation that helped keep it from happening again.

  • from what i read they initially didnt think it was leaking, then tried to use subs to turn it off, then tried to burn it.

hopefully the assholes responsible will have to pay tons of cash to fix it. and the weather will calm down and it wont as bad as the Valdez.

i worked out there for a summer and probably almost died 3 times. very dangerous work. another rig exploded while i was out there (but it didnt leak anything). i was glad to be off that that metal death trap.

exactly. the initial report was NO SPILL. i was very suspect of that no spill report at first. then its funny how it goes from no spill to worst oil spill in the last 30 years....i really believe they were lying. in this case, how can you have an explosion, which requires some sort of fuel, and expect there to be no oil spilling out?

But the clean up is gonna cost them out of pocket bucks-And we all know how much they hate spending money to clean up the environment. I think I am going to invent a valve that can remotely open or shut a well below the surface/ocean bottom.

You're too late on the invention...the valves exist but are not used on a lot of platforms because it is not a requirement. BP is a company that chose to not use them.
  • Just so everyones knows I was only asking a simple ? regarding the swat teams. :geek: I have no intention on blaming Obama for any of this, but not saying anything for 8 days makes me wonder why his administration would wait so long cos let's be fair if this was the Bush administration the media would be going ape shit right now.If they would have been silent for 8 days.
But Im not going to focus on that right now, Does anyone else think that maybe that this could have been intentional ? Just asking ... since obama did say that they were going to start to allow more drillling ? This decision could have really pissed some environmentalist off, I mean hey you never know these days.

i seriously doubt any environmentalists would have the ability to pull off something like that.

to be honest it does seem kind fluky to me. its not exactly common, but oil rigs do blow up from time to time. rarely does it result in a massive oil spill though. there are probably several different factors involved.

on the one i was working, the driller miscalculated something and the pressure spit a few big 30 foot steel pipes raining down on the deck and covered everything in "mud" (its not really mud). lucky it didnt blow up. it doesnt take much to screw up something i guess.

I have no idea about the process of extracting oil but....

isn't it common to have explosions and fires at land based wells?

why wouldn't it be any different for offshore wells?

    just wondering

Yeah but that was part of the plan of a group of people that went with their views.

I seriously doubt devestating entire ecosystems in the Gulf would be the intention of any environmentalist group, no matter how radically they wanted to send a message. That would be like setting fire to a forest to protest logging companies.

i don't know of any environmentalist who would do such a thing, and the very notion of that happening would be disgusting to them.

I guess there would be one example of pro-lifers killing doctors that would work, but still from an environmentalist standpoint, i agree they would be disgusted if anything were to happen like that.

YOU demand it (so do I). We must change our behavior soon or we will be kicked off of "Pandora." The blame is on all of us.

OR: This oil spill will be used by the Mass Media to make everyone feel that way. Then people will be more accepting of huge sin taxes/carbon taxes on fuel, electricity, etc. We The People will have less money, therefore less power. And the Banksters will have even more!

This is the kind of thing that leaves me feeling wholly misanthropic. I want to see BP using ALL of its profits towards the cleanup until the area is restored, so basically forever.

I know it sounds harsh or bad, but it almost makes it better that whole industries are being affected... if it was solely and environmental issue I don't think the public would care as much - but now that their jobs are being affected they'll be active in the situation

What they fail to mention is that on the news when this first happened they did cover the remote switch option and in this circumstance the remote switch wouldn't have helped any due to the circumstances. But I really wouldn't expect it from Ed. Not saying they shouldn't have to use the switches but........well, I figured this would be G.W's fault sooner or later.

maybe instead of more taxes we should cut some of the corporate welfare or demand if you are an american company or politician receiving government contracts or tax dollars pay their salary to pay taxes. companies like halliburton that make billions and some US politicians pay NO us taxes while being paid with tax payer money

I cannot wait for the day when renewable resources are the only fuel used. Things like this make me sick. To think that simply to make a car drive we have the ability to destroy a giant body of water is disturbing. For as long as companies say they have been working on renewable resources, you would think we would be beaming places by now.
Good luck to everyone down there, hopefully you guys come out of this mess ok. And BP better be writing a HUGE check for this.
