my apologies for being a realistic fan...

Just not sure that the hyperboles of "horrible," "if you can't hear it, then you are deaf," and stuff like that would be the kind of thing that indicate "realistic fan."

"Realistic" is saying - sure, he's aging, his voice is sometimes showing wear and tear from the abuse (substances, overuse, etc), just like saying "hey, sometimes they played this song too fast, or too slow," or "not every song deserves a Grammy." That's a realistic fan. And I think that kind of analysis will make sense to most people...

It's like the fact that Kobe Bryant is starting to show some signs of age, mileage, etc. He will not be pulling out the crazy, reverse-from-the-other-side-of-the-basket type dunks over 7-footers anymore. But is he "horrible" now? Ask anyone who's tried to guard him this year...

I agree that he sounded best in 98 and 06 but since 2006 his voice has gone WAY downhill fast. 07 was tolerable and 08 and 09 were horrible...if you can't hear that then you are deaf. He DEFINITELY needs to quit smoking.

wow, this is total horse shit.

If it were horse shit, they wouldn't be playing a lot of the songs tuned down a half step the last couple years. They do that so that the singer can hit the higher notes easier. Ed does smoke too much, and as a singer, he shouldn't smoke AT ALL. You can only tune down so far until your songs will all start to sound like Korn songs.
He should be PRESERVING that amazing old voice, not DESTROYING it with cigarettes.

but honestly, a half-step down? that's really not much, man - for a 2-hour show, for a band that's been playing for about 20 years...

I agree that thy don't want to start playing in drop-C like Slipknot or something, but tons of bands key things down that tiny little bit to keep going strong, show after show - some of that is just normal maintenance...

    Well...They came....I saw.....they kicked my ass.

After I went to the Columbus show the other night, I figured the board deserved to hear my response to the rebuttal to my concerns posted here in my original post. Here is a clip from my fanview:

"Ed's voice was.................in very, very good shape. I'd give it an 8/10. I'd started a thread on that topic a few days before the show but I'd have to say there were very few spots that I heard him pull off or change a note. He hit the extra long "all I'll ever beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!" during Black, nailed "Gems and rhinestones!" and was pretty good on GTF. I still wonder how he'll sound by tour's end...."

So yeah, so far so good. I would say my fears have been mostly allayed (sp?)

Ed can do whatever the fuck he wants. IF he wants to smoke and drink and enjoy himself, he will do it. He doesn't owe anyone hear a fucking thing. If you don't like the way his voice sounds, then don't go to any more fucking shows!!! I can't stand these threads...
  • I've been pretty critical of his voice over the years. Since 03, I've felt he has had no control over his notes and it sounds pretty high pitched at times. That said, I bought the bootleg for LA 4 from 09 and he was spot on for most of the show. I can honestly say that his voice sounds great the past couple years. For me, it's always been about the control of his voice and the ability to stay away from "two-toning" as he sings...

He's doing well and I'm looking forward to Boston on the 17th.
