i'm surprised this has not been posted yet...i'm not sure how i feel about this. yes south park is satire and can go a little overboard at times, but i doubt the creators are deliberately trying to hurt or anger certain groups of people. i think their art is clever but at times a little distasteful, but that does not warrant threats of violence against them in my opinion...at what point is freedom of speech going too far? i think people need to lighten up and be able to laugh at themselves, but apparently these radical muslim groups would disagree with me...what does everyone else think?

LOS ANGELES - A radical Muslim group has warned the creators of "South Park" that they could face violent retribution for depicting the prophet Muhammad in a bear suit during last week's episode.

The website RevolutionMuslim.com has since been taken down, but a cached version shows the message to "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The article's author, Abu Talhah Al-Amrikee of New York, said the men "outright insulted" the religious leader.

The posting showed a gruesome picture of Theo Van Gogh, a Dutch filmmaker who was shot and stabbed to death in an Amsterdam street in 2004 by a fanatic angered by his film about Muslim women. The film was written by a Muslim woman who rejected the Prophet Muhammad as a guide for today's morality.

"We have to warn Matt and Trey that what they are doing is stupid and they will probably wind up like Theo Van Gogh for airing this show," Al-Amrikee wrote. "This is not a threat, but a warning of the reality of what will likely happen to them."

The posting listed the addresses of Comedy Central's New York office and Parker and Stone's California production office. It also linked to a Huffington Post article that described a Colorado retreat owned by the two men.

CNN, which first reported the posting, said the New York-based website is known for postings in support of Osama bin Laden and jihad, or holy war, against the West.

Poster says group admires Osama bin Laden
Al-Amrikee told The Associated Press in a phone call Wednesday that the posting was made to raise awareness of the issue and to see that it does not happen again.

Asked if Parker and Stone should feel threatened by it, he said "they should feel threatened by what they did."

He said he was disappointed that publicity about the posting focused more on the potential danger to the producers but admitted, "I could shoulder some blame" for it.

He said he "can't answer that legally" when asked if his group favored jihad. But he praised bin Laden.

"We look up to him and admire him for the sacrifices he has given for the religion," he said.

Last week's episode, the 200th for the cheeky and often vulgar cartoon, was intended to feature many of the personalities and groups that Parker and Stone insulted during the series' run.

In 2006, Comedy Central banned the men from showing an image of Muhammad on their show. They had intended to comment on the controversy created by a Danish newspaper's publishing of caricatures of the Islamic leader. Muslims consider any physical representation of their prophet to be blasphemous.

Instead, "South Park" showed an image of Jesus Christ defecating on President George W. Bush and the American flag.

Comedy Central and the show's producers would not comment.

SPOILER ALERT FOR ANYONE WHO HAS NOT SEEN IT YET! DON'T READ UNTIL AFTER YOU'VE SEEN IT!

Tonight, they bleeped out the word Muhammed and had a censor sign on him. They made fun of everyone not being able to say the word Muhammed in public and censored his body. The muslim group may think South Park listened to what they said, but they just made fun of not being able to say Muhammed and show him on TV.

South Park showed Muhammed in a Season 5 episode called "Super Best Friends". But that was before 9/11.

I was thinking that by them bleeping what was presumably the word muhammad, then they could show a person getting out of the bear costume, since they never referred to muhammad in that episode.

Yeah, some people get mad at anything.

I think Stone and Parker are treading dangerous ground here…they had to expect this kind of reaction. Knowing that…maybe they shouldn’t have fanned the flames.
On the other hand, maybe this is an important discussion if people can try to gain some kind of understanding of the other side’s stance.

That said…despite my normally sympathetic tendencies when it comes to islam, middle east culture etc, and western meddling in that part of the world…IMO, people who get this worked up over a cartoon can be lumped in with abortion doctor killers, flag-waving war supporters, and anyone else who falls back on extreme nationalism/religious dogma to compensate for their personal shortcomings. All fucking idiots.

Props to South Park, and godspeed ;)
  • I find it funny that the response to their opinion is "we will now kill you." Who is the distasteful one? The atheists or the religiosos?

As a W.M.A. I feel that I cannot judge Al-Amrikee's intent as I am not familiar with his cultural and religious view points. I've been told that it is a slippery slope so I will have to assume that it merits good intent.

I agree. I'd have more sympathy if certain people did not think it is acceptable to threaten people with death whenever a cartoon evokes their faith. Anyone who honestly thinks that violence is an acceptable response to feeling offended must have some pretty weaksauce faith.

Right. My point is that being provocative for the sake of provocation is probably more harmful than it is funny….but if the point is to spur discussion, then there is something to be learned on both sides of this culture clash, and it’s a good thing (hence my props to South Park).

If this is dealt with respectfully, maybe some young muslim reading about the controversy will reconsider following such a strict dogma….if we just further insult their religion/culture (by doing stupid things like calling them fucking idiots ;) ) instead of trying to understand, then this whole situation backfires; the gap widens, and we’re all worse off.

I gotcha. :) I think that SP is bringing light to the fact that mentioning a name, or showing any image, or even NOT mentioning a name (bleeps) and NOT showing and image (bear costume to hide 100%) even outside of any context of trying to be funny, is inherently "provocative" to these extremists... thus making it funny.

Man...I thought I chose my words carefully enough to avoid this typical response....
First....toleration? I'm no grammar cop, but come ON.
    Second, I'm not american.
Third....you're right - in this particular instance, there isn't much to understand. I don't condone violence for this kind of thing and said so earlier in the thread. If you'd not been so eager to promote the superiority of your religion, you might have realized that. As stated, I lump these people in with christian extremists (yes, they exist), and war apologists who jusify mass murder/war/occupation via flag waving and bible thumping, and basically anyone else who practices a form of groupthink that results in violence.....in other words....I lump them in with....uh...some of the posters here ;)

I recently learned of Pat Condell and think he's a fellow hitting the nail on the head when it comes to Islam and some of the flaws of multiculturalism to the point of absurdity. I encourage people to give a listen to some of what he has to say. I think some of you with opinions on either side of this South Park issue might find some of what he has to say interesting.

    http://www.patcondell.com/

There's a lot of commentary about Islam and some monologues about totally other stuff. Have a listen and see what you think. I feel like he does a great job at articulating a lot of things people think and know at heart, but often totally fail to express when they try to. I also appreciate his ability to point out that evaluating and sometimes criticizing is something we ought to be doing... to everything. There's a pretty grave danger present in not doing so.

One think I'm not liking about how his site has been redone is that I'm not seeing an overall list of his monologues to choose from. Instead it seems to just go in reverse order from his homepage.

P.S. I just did a search on You Tube and found that it looks like most of his monologues are present there in a manner that can let you pick and choose from his topics a bit better.
After having a look at some of the hate mail Pat Condell has received for his views (http://www.patcondell.com/page4/page4.html), I can only imagine what the South Park staff are all receiving at the moment. It's time for some change and for a reality check on racial and cultural sensitivities.

Actually, it wasn't Trey and Matt's decision to bleep the word Muhammed. They delivered the show to Comedy Central and the pussy suits pissed themselves and decided to bleep them without the creators permission. See for yourself.

Saw this episode last night in the UK. Muhammed wasn't bleeped out and I don't recall making fun of not being able to say the name. What they did have was the fact that his image could not be shown on TV and had a big 'censored' block. Though I don't think it had anything to do with censorship per se but with the whole thing about the religion not allowing his image to be shown. The whole episode was based on that (ie the bear suit, etc.).

Is this again the case of the Americans making a mountain out of a molehill?
