some kids i play basketball with are 19. i tried playing inside job once but it didn't really work for the environment. VS always did though. and i never told them who it was. even people my age have their own idea of what pj already is in their head. i like sneaking pj songs on people and once they're like yea i like this i go, "HA! IT'S PEARL JAM..MWAAHAHA"
i was also there btw..such a cool way to start the show back up.

I was little surprised that so many felt the songs had to be head bangers here on the thread.I didn't read through all the posts but...
When I was young I listened to lyrics there has to be teens and 20 somethings that are listening to lyrics especially those that play guitar. I picture a person who plays guitar to be a rather deep individual, listening intently. For me Inside Job is so exceptionally beautiful. I know nothing about guitar but the way Stone comes in and plays after Mike is taking the lead and Boom with the organ and then the lyrics- kids would feel this and relate I think. I am so prejudice though I know when it comes to PJ and you are so right to about people's preconceived ideas.
"Underneath this smile lies everything all my hopes, anger pride and shame.
make yourself a pact, not to shut doors to the past
just for today ...I am free."
all the lyrics very powerful about relying on yourself on your faith and learning to appreciate love.
its perfection to me- they played it also on Halloween- it blew me away to see from the 2nd row. I think I cried.
If you know the kids well enough as individuals, assign them each their own Pearl Jam song based on their personalities and interests. Then have them share amongst themselves.
~ Chicago 5/16/06 ~ Chicago 8/23/09 ~ Chicago 8/24/09 ~ ~ Kansas City 5/3/10 ~ Alpine Valley 9/3/11 ~ Alpine Valley 9/4/11 ~ ~ Wrigley Field 7/19/13 ~ Oklahoma City 11/16/13 ~ St. Louis 10/3/14 ~ ~ Wrigley Field 8/20/16 ~ Wrigley Field 8/18/18 ~ Wrigley Field 8/20/18 ~ ~ Fenway Park 9/4/18 ~ Denver 9/22/22
Take it from a highschooler. Just give them Ten, don't give them rarities or Binaural, they won't like them. Ten is timeless, it appeals to everyone.
Or this... but add SOLAT, Breath, Brother, and maybe Hold On.
Don't stunt their growth though. I don't react well to Pearl Jam "fans" that can't discuss anything more than Ten.

I'd go with Vs. and not Ten. I'm 15 and I've always thought Vs. was superior. It also honestly seems to be more of a hit with friends when I try to get them into the band.
I'm 18 myself and I would recommend two songs that I learnt really early on when I first picked up the axe.
1. Betterman...a very distinctive opening riff that is actually very simple to play...i remember it being the first thing i could play other than basic open chords and it made me feel like i was a guitarist cos i could play something so 'hard' lol...after mastering the intro its just 3 simple chords so then they can just go for it!
2. Rearviewmirror....when i have a pearl jam cd playing in my car people around my age don't get into Ten as much because the production makes it sound pretty old and they're turned off by that...whereas Vs. they hear Go, Animal etc. and they comment like, "As if this is Pearl Jam, they don't sound like some old grunge band, they sound pretty pissed off." Rearviewmirror gets the most positive comments from my mates and its simple but awesome to play on guitar too!

Whatever you end up choosing, will be an awesome introduction to what's comming!
But as someone here said " Don't tell them who it is."

I have a Pearl Jam 'lifting' setlist that the kids kind of dig:
Animal
Even Flow
Jeremy
Corduroy
Why Go
RVM
Given to Fly
Unemployable
are songs off the top of my head- chose the most popular, up tempo tunes!
Kids (for the most part) aren't going to appreciate PJs deeper cuts- that make up this board's favourites- upon introduction.
Lots of trippy drug reference inuendo. High school kids love that shit.
As do adults.
I'd go with In Hiding and get your hands on Single Video Theory.
Great intro by Stone, how he just wouldn't give up on the riff.
After that Black, it's a beauty.

More for eye-candy
Then show them the Alive video
Then teach them fingerpicking via "Just Breathe"
I refer to those in front...
