My rebellious act of the week.

I got the census and for "race" I checked off "other" and wrote "human".

What is race really? How is it important?.. If we keep dividing people into groups based on appearances, how are we ever going to get rid of racism?

Do we really need to keep track of how many blacks, whites, mexicans, hybrids, vulcans there are?..

Fucking governent doesn't need to know how much pigment I have in my skin.

I largely agree with you ... People still seem obsessed with the construct. You still have the bona fide racist elements in society, and you also have the people that have to write news reports every other week about the "changing demographic" in the US and Canada. If somehow all this focus could be channelled into a respect for and appreciation of cultural differences, it wouldn't bother me. Instead, though, its all about various combinations of fear-mongering, political correctness, and polarization. No one in the mainstream culture even feels comfortable talking about race (unless behind closed doors). At the end of the day, who gives a shit? There are more meaningful ways to categorize people. I am a mutt, like most people in North America. Good enough. I can take some pride in my heritage, which according to some is all about my genotype. Um, no. Culture is about creating shared meanings, and who cares what I look like (super pale) or how much Native Canadian ancestry I have (more than some of my darker-skinned cousins).

I'm essentially a northern european mutt, but that's what, 10,000 years family influence in a million years of human existance?.. as far as culture goes, I would classify myself as Chicagoan or Midwesterner. There's definite American cultural diffences in the U.S., starting with the accents.

This is exactly what I was trying to say in the Census thread. I totally agree.

Plus - what is the definition of each race? And aren't we all of mixed race at this point anyway?

You can answer that Race question anyway you see fit. The definition is how you identify yourself. 'Human' works... you can put 'Martian' if you want. You will just be counted as an 'Other'.

    CONservative governMENt

Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law-breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. - Louis Brandeis

I think many, many Americans are of mixed race. I think that should be an option.

It really bothers me that they have the options "Hispanic" or "Non-hispanic." Neither one works for me.

What about people like me who are partially Hispanic? I'm not entirely Hispanic, I'm not entirely non-Hispanic. There should be a third option! :x

It bugged me in the last census and it bugged me this time too.

How do YOU define yourself? Do you consider yourself as more 'Hispanic' or less?
Like the Original Poster stated, 'Human' is how he defines himself. He will get dropped in the 'Others' category.

I am an American. I just happen to have Mexican grandparents and a Mexican American dad.

I don't really know the culture though (because I only met them once!) so I would not call myself Hispanic except that biologically I am, indeed, half Hispanic.

BUT, really, why do we have to classify ourselves as one or the other anyway? Why can't there be a box to check for "mixture."

I am aware that "American" is not a race.

As a family, we decided to choose "Caucasian" because the three males are carrying an Italian last name.

    and there you have it.

On a side note... that is funny and ironic... or sad and ironic... is that the 'scared of the government' folks who will listen to Michelle Bachman will not get counted... while the Mexicans and Black they hate so much... will be counted and the federal funding will be tailored more towards the minority community, than theirs.
So... i guess it's more like poetic justice... that their campaign of fear and misinformation they created ends up crapping all over them.

I'm never sure what to put as far as race. I have, as far as I know, Spaniard, Filipino and Italian ancestry. My kids have it worse, as they have Irish, Scottish, German, Dutch, Cherokee ancestry in addition to mine.

Yes. Well, I think it's bad that this system DIVIDES people by making them pick a label for themselves.

Wouldn't it be great if all Americans could just be "American people" without having to be labeled by any race at all? That's why I called myself American. I think as a group, we will eventually be known as the stew that all the immigrant ingredients created. ;)
