I don't hate it, but there's nothing special about it. Aside from Speed of Sound, it's one of my least favorites on Backspacer.
This is me too sort of.
I usually just skip GSMF when I am listening to the cd. It was so nice of them to put it first so I can just skip right over it.
And yeah I have about as much love for Speed of Sound, which I can never even remember the name of.
Every other song on Backspacer I really love though!

I always thought that song had horrible lyrics (which is very odd by the band). So it's one of the few PJ songs I can't get into.

Sometimes I don't like it that much because I dont always enjoy the chrorus and Ed's singing in it. Kind of how I felt about bits of Avocado.

But other times it's totally motivating and I notice the drums are mental and Ed sounds great in other parts (statue... tatoo... awaaayyyyyY!!).

It's one of the worst songs on the album. But, the album is one of my favorites. So, I'd say Gonna See My Friend is an above average PJ song. It's just that I'd rather listen to every other song on Backspacer before Gonna See My Friend, besides of course... Supersonic.

Wow I couldn't dissagree with you more, GSMF is my 2nd favorite off the album and Supersonic is my 1st, they are kinda the same style though so I guess if you like one then you like the other and same with if you don't like one.

When I first heard this track I thought 'This is my new favourite upbeat Pearl Jam track'. It's up with with Hail, Hail and Spin the Black Circle for me in terms of riffy, punk-inspired rock tunes. The lyrics are awesome and Jeff and Matt are sooo tight on this track, even with Matt's crazy Mudhoney-esque fills.

I'm surprised I'm still so in love with this track, despite it easily being my most played song from Backspacer, but I'm more surprised that I haven't heard other people on this board show it some love. So who's with me?!

I really hope they play it at Hyde Park Calling in June...

sending out love for Gonna See My Friend!!
  • Def should be the next single, but I thought severed hand was amazing too and it didn't get any love...
If Severed Hand was the lead single on that album, it would have gone platinum.

yeah it makes no sense to me, the riff is awesome, then that thing in the 2nd verse where the guitar is ripping hardcore, then the awsoeme solo, then the awesome ending riff, would have been pretty clear to me if I were them but maybe they see something I don't, Maybe it's the long part at the beggining

Def. not that. Otherwise "Corduroy" and "Betterman" would've never been radio hits.
