Pearl Jam Fan Created Blu Ray - Lets do it!

This thread is for people who are interested in helping to produce and film a live, fan created dvd/blu ray. And, to see if you, the fan, might be interested in having a free, live pearl jam video. If you are interested please read below! I'm also open for suggestion, ideas, locations, everything. Any input would be appreciated! And the more posts, the more attention, and, maybe we can get with the right group of people. Getting the initial footage is the EASY part. Once we have it, and it exists, i know we can get this to happen.

Every few weeks im looking. Checking again online looking...

I have a great 7.1 surround sound blu ray player, as well as a 52" sony bravia tv.

Im always looking for a pearl jam blu ray. Seems there isnt one planned, or, there is no news of one.

So i looked at what exists and thought why couldnt we do it our selves? Here's a real example of that happening.

I'm a big fan of Nine Inch Nails. Over the last year ive been part of a group called This Ones On Us.

During the last year this group has worked togother with people not only across the us but the world. Heres what they did.

The group traveled to the west coast. They attened 3 shows, vancouver, portland and sacramento. Togother, using modern age email and cell phones, they planned. They atteneded the shows, About 15-20 people. They all had "ALLOWED" hand held hd cameras, the ones the size of nikon coolpix. Around the size of a pack of smokes or a cassette tape. Their goal was to capture as much hd footage as possible.

When all was done, they released it - nearly 500 gigs of raw hd footage. This was distributed using modern age torrents and file shares. Nothing that is hard to be done. When this happened, it was done saying "compile your own edits - lets see what you come up with" And the response was amazing. People download the files, and were shocked to see nearly 20 sources for each show. One standard camera dead center, and the rest hand held shots with people using basic skills like not shaking the camera and focusing on indivuals so it wasnt all of one peron, easy stuff. When they saw that, people started making rough cuts. And dont get me wrong, over the last year, ive seen 5 versions of the concert. But then a group got smart. What if they could take it and through colarboration with others make the best show they could, and after a year of work, they have - the gift. What started out as an idea has now been turned into a 100% amazing concert film. When trent reznor heard what was going on, he released the gift to us, which was a 5.1 surround sound track to accompany the film.

So as of now, the film is being finalized to the last drop. Enough money, nearly 10,000 dollars in donations have been given to the site, that people who signed up for this free dvd or blu ray will reiceve a 3 disc set, a blu ray disc of the concert in 1080p with 5.1 dolby digital surround sound, a dvd with bonus features and a 3rd dvd with Lights in the Sky - vegas, the last show of that tour with a more raw, bootleg cut.

Trent rezonor has now listed it on his main site in support of this free show, numerous twitter references by other musicians as well as alot of magazines, including rolling stone, has talked abut the project.

And did i mention that this is out there, as a free dual layer, color corrected, extremly edited and alot of hard work, as a torrent off of the site http://thisoneisonus.org/node/34

They even have a blu ray torrent coming soon, as well as a physical release of nearly 5000 discs being pressed, for nothing more than shipping?! I paid 6 dollars for a 3 disc set of blu ray and 2 dvd. And if i wanted them for free i could download them, but i don't have a blu ray burner.

And for those who would like to take a look now, the entire show is available on you tube right now in 1080p, here is the links for that - http://www.youtube.com/results?search_q ... type=&aq=1

The Big Come Down (just 1 of 2 that i thought looked really well)

Only (just 2 of 2 that i thought looked really well)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAVdsgH9Rpk

So - Her'es what i would like to give the idea for, maybe people willing to help could post a reply here and we can get it organized, WE COULD DO SOMETHING GREAT! If people got together and threw out ideas, we also could get a fan produced show out there. And if we got the work done, you know if the band saw it they wouldn't oblige to it.

So what are your ideas? We could copy exactly what they did. And we could do it great. What do you say?

And if im being over zealous, well, why not? Its 2010 and alot of us have great technology that we pay alot for, computers, internet, cameras, phones with camears, tvs, big ass tvs, blu ray players... etc etc, and why not take advanage of the fact that our phones shoot hd and do something great, something that will go all around the world? That's how i see it anyway.

I know i would watch a pearl jam blu ray with High Definition sound. I would like that alot :)

Thats why i came here and threw out the idea that we could come together and share our footage

    and
The problem is, PJ doesn't allow video cameras at shows

but they do allow small hand held cameras. I have a camera i bought for 89 that will shoot hd video also, and its the size of a cassette tape!

I dont mean we go in with tv cameras or anything.

You get 20 people to work together, you can come out with something great.

And, maybe its just me, but at every show, i see nothing but probably 2000 camera phones taking pictures and small video shots during every show i go to. Why not collaborate and try and and get some people to go to like Kansas and Missouri to try and get something done.

Please don't squash the idea, lets try and take the positive and see what happens.
And, if it were to come together, i know people squashing the idea wouldn't not download the torrent. probably everyone on here would love someone to post a link to ANY show on video in a torrent, much less a multi cam edit of something.

    Opinions, anyone?

take a look, it was all shot in 1080p, and then sent to people who volunteered to work on the project, people who have editing equipment already. I know that the final version looks great. Here is what the nin team did, check out how good it looks here

    9. Please respect the band's Taping & Camera policy (https://www.pearljam.com/tenclub).
Trading audience-recorded PJ shows even-up, ok. No video. Bootlegs: Selling, linking to, or making offers are not ok. 2 for 1 trades is making profit, not ok.

We can't talk about fan made video recordings of the Pearl Jam. Outside the boards, underground groups & local trading communities .. go nuts.

I wish someday the rules got broken & PJ followed the way's of NIN & many other artists. Sony isn't in control anymore. They are on their own now, just like NIN. Cause there is a huge Pearl Jam fan base community out there & we are all living in a digital world. But it makes you wonder why the madness & why the strict no cameras, no audio & no video during the Vedder solo show's. You couldn't even post a photo, an audio clip or a video clip on youtube.com or on the web. Links would be taken down asap. It was pretty wild. PJ have always been audio friendly for year's now (well, on the gear you would bring to the shows), but for video, it's a no go.

Believe me, I am a follower of the arts of b+p'ing, trading, torrenting & freebing PJ goodies for year's. This stuff can't be talked about here. Until change happens, the underground path is in our favor for now.

The Bluray offer's Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio! *drools

Whereas digital 5.1 surround delivers sound from the front, middle and rear, 7.1 digital surround fully surrounds you with audio from the front, middle, rear and sides.

I can't wait for 8.1. Audio will be coming from the bottom & top of your forehead!

I guess what I'd say publicly is I'm a HUGE fan of NIN, a member of ets, have met a couple of the folks involved with This one is on us and am super-proud of the NIN community and what they've accomplished with The Gift, and Another Version of the Truth. I hope that PJ allows this sort of thing in the future. It gets attention from good online entities and I think, helps the band be out there and publicized. Showing the world what a capable and enthusiastic fan base you have can only be a good thing IMO.

Absolutely PJ would allow this if it was cleared through them before hand and someone has the lead on it. All footage could be screened by them first. It promotes them, sells their music/shows and God forbid...could draw a new fan or 2 into the mix. Nothing bad could come of this IMO.

  • Yea, don't get me wrong. I would love to see it happen, and participate I have a lot of exprerience in video editing and would LOVE to cut a bunch of footage together. I guess if everyone did come together and used cell phone and maybe even flip cam video it could be done. Especially since we will have the official bootleg to use as the audio track

    Hi.

    Thanks for the good words.

I agree with the no taping policy, if that's whats in place, then fine.

What im trying to say is we could do this with our "allowed" camera, ie hand held digital cameras that also capture video.

You buy a larger sd card, and your hand held camera is now an hd camera.

It doesnt take a professional team to organize.

If im asked to remove this thread, then i could. Could someone please tell me where would be more appropriate than the bands message board to get this idea moving?

Personally, I think this idea is exciting. I hope someday the band does come around the idea to truely being open with their fans. Trent has done some wicked cool stuff and its really paid off for him. I for one didn't understand why it was like that for the Ed shows. It seemed almost over the top - rumors of cameras and sd cards confiscated by security...*I mean you're a public figure dude, people are going to take pictures*

Anyway, I'd be curious what kind of small camera or phone you're using to get this HD footage. from what I've seen when burnt to blu ray it doesn't look as good as a conventially produced one, but I'm not tech expert. What do you use?

Great thread. Exciting idea. Keep it going, build some mementum. Sign me up.

    Yea
Smaller cameras dont always produce the same results as professionl cameras.

But, if filmed in 1080p, the process can be done where its cleaned up, color corrected, edited togother and so on.

Im not 100% sure what cameras to use. But if you watch the link for the nin footage, you will see it looks great, the quality is great, and you constantly see peple holding up the camera on the nin footage.

They have flip cameras that work well too. It doesnt have to be 100% flawless, but what came out from the nin team impressed and suprised everyone.

Again, it doesnt have to be perfect, but, with multiple sources you can pick and choose. And with a offical bootleg to go along with it, you have your sound too.

Here is there official release about it.

    THE AIM

On 5th May, 2008, Nine Inch Nails released their latest album, The Slip, free, online, as a gift to their fans. Or as Trent put it: “This one’s on me”.
On December 13th, 2008, dozens of Nine Inch Nails fans recorded the last show in the Lights In The Sky tour at Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas.
On January 7th, 2009, over 400Gb of video from the Victoria, Portland and Sacramento shows was unofficially released by the band.
By working together, the Nine Inch Nails fan community created a two DVD set to document these shows that will be released free online (along with a bonus DVD with tour related rarities), followed by a physical release, again created by fans for fans.
This one is on us. Our time. Our effort. Our Gift to all NIN fans.

    THE MISSION
In February 2009, Trent Reznor announced that his upcoming world tour would be his last, before making Nine Inch Nails
    “disappear for a while”, stating:
“ Last year’s “Lights in the Sky” tour was something I’m quite proud of and seems like the culmination of what I could pull off in terms of an elaborate production.”
Near the end of the 2008 Lights in the Sky tour, hailed by critics for its unmatched visual splendour, Trent Reznor had some disappointing news: An official 3-D DVD project, to be shot with director James Cameron, had fallen through due to complications with his old recording label (they dragged their feet until it was too late).
The Nine Inch Nails message boards lit up. How, the fans asked, could a tour as ground breaking and stunning as this possibly not be recorded? As they commiserated, one fan (Alex Gamble) asked a different question: Why can’t we do it ourselves? Nine Inch Nails fans have a long history of documenting the band themselves – from the Live Essentials compilation series to sourcing rare interviews and recordings and putting them (for free) into the hands of the fans, and away from scalpers and profiteers.
And so on December 13th, 2008, when Nine Inch Nails performed the last show on its Lights in the Sky tour at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, dozens of the band’s fans secretly documented the concert.
Was Trent Reznor inspired by the fans? As they were planning to descend on Las Vegas, three other concerts on the tour were pro-shot. On Jan. 7th, 2009, more than 400 GB of video from the Victoria, Portland and Sacramento shows were unofficially released by the band on its Web site.
That one fan’s question has turned into a large-scale project that will culminate in the release of a two-disc professional quality DVD release. *Another Version of the Truth: This One’s On Us*: one disc exclusively with fan footage from the Las Vegas show, and one tour video with the pro-shot footage. Fans
included professional audio engineers, video editors, DVD authors and designers working in Hollywood, the UK, France, Quebec, Poland and Australia, with input from around the world regarding various aspects of the release ].
*Another Version of the Truth *can give you a way to show the dedication of the NIN fanbase and what it means to have such a vital band disappearing.

    The Process
Thousands of fans leapt to the aid of the TOIOU project within hours of the idea being formed. Editing services, web hosting, and DVD
donations flooded in from around the globe. With it, several questions anchored in a concern to to make the project a concern presented themselves. What order do things need to be done in? How long do these things take? Out of this came goals and deadlines.
Given the amount of people involved, and a feeling that we really wanted to make the best DVD possible, and - let’s face it - we’d never done anything like this before, we found people out of the volunteers who had experience and who could lead the rest of the teams. People who knew all the audio jargon, people who knew what the best video formats are, and, most importantly, people who were serious about doing this. As audio work had already begun for Vegas, it felt logical to mirror this with the Gift audio, and from that the video editors would have a model to follow. A side effect of this is that we found ourselves with release quality audio content very early on that eventually became the audio release that came out in early March. The audio editors went on to tweak and optimise the audio for DVD with a view to making a 5.1 mix.
By this stage, dozens of data tapes, cartridges, hard drives, and CDs had been sent to Alex (torgo/shitfuckdamn) to start work on the Vegas DVD. This was also dozens of different files in different formats that had to be normalised before work could begin. Cue lots of rendering,
muxing, and exasperated twittering! At the same time, we were presented with the problem of making sure all the Gift editors had the footage, and how to make sure this could all be spliced together. kililmoms offered to provide the footage on a HDD that could be shipped around - from DC to Philly, to Quebec, to South Australia, to Poland, and eventually to London. On its travels, it was discovered that demuxing the files for use on a PC changed the timecodes that would make using EDL files (a way of storing the edits in a tiny file rather than having to store the actual full edit) possible. Since half the editing team where on PC and half on Mac, this was a problem. Luckily, Killmoms had also granted us access to a private FTP server, so we were able to transfer full edits around, even if it did slow us down a little. At least we could all see what each editor was doing.
Of course, not everything can work to plan the first time. The glitches noted above and a few inevitable life issues - people
losing their jobs, having babies, and and being involved in car crashess - did mean that the project timeline and editing deadline had to change slightly, but it was generally felt that it was more important to maintain the quality of the DVD than rush to finish it by an arbitrary date. An emphasis on perfection (perhaps inspired by the work ethic of Nine Inch Nails itself) echoed throughout every aspect of the final output, and editors, transcribers, and designers alike went through a rigorous process of drafting and re-drafting their work until the highest standards possible were reached.

I am not a nin fan by any means but major props on that whole project and story. Incredible idea! Maybe if we just contact the powers that be for a clearance on one show?

Our dvd would def be better than touring band. It looks like it was shoot on vhs, with boring static camera work, and little editing. And even if we did ours like next year, it would still be out before a philly dvd! Haha!

  • I thought this topic was stating that the guy who created Blu-Ray was a Pearl Jam fan. I came in because I didn't understand the "Let's do it" part in that context.

Yea, im not on here pushing the nin dvd.

I am using it as an example of how easy it can be to organize something like this.

And, we, the pearl jam fans, could create a dvd or blu ray with something as small as the items we already own.

And i really agree that the tickets must have side tracked everyone, i know i myself am very excited about the possibility.

If Madison square garden can hold 10,000 breath signs in 1998, then in 2010 we can get 20-30 people to hold flip cams, or, their cell phone (that they hold up already for picture and small video clips!) or a hand-held digital camera that also shoots video.

I would like to know if anyone knows a site that might get a bigger response? Any particular pj trading sites? User groups?

Im not a big forum type person, but when i had the vision of it happenening, i actually saw msg with thousands of hand held cameras... it would be amazing finished product with that much source!

I agree! We need some people to get involved.

We can take regular clips, if we get enough together to be uploaded as a torrent, we can get something together. Any volunteers? Any ideas?

This can and will be great if we can work it out.
    Any thoughts would be great.
