But seriously how can PJ ever top Philly shows?

I am from NY and I have seen PJ over 30+ times I was lucky enough to see them all four times in Philly. I seen all msg shows jones beach or anything in the tri-state area. The philly shows really rocked that final show had just the right amount of rare songs w/fan faves and the total atmosphere just all came together to make it a special night. Now keep in mine MSG 98 was truly a great show, and philly 2005, was right there but its gonna be hard for them to top night 4. Yea they can probably play dirtyfrank, or even ANGEL :) but still. You had to be there from the Philly montage, Rocky music......incredible show....mike ending it with yellowled/star (balloons, confettie....all the works). I was lucky enough to get tix for both MSG and Hartford....but although in my head that was probably the greatest show, I can never be dissapointed and will enjoy what PJ has stored for this year.

  • maybe they can't. maybe if they played a 4+ hr show to over 100k fans in some amazing venue that's packed full of ten club members only. that would be sweet.

Here is how i look at it...

you have the real classic shows, must see, must hear, must be there. Philly 4, Bonnaroo, Benyora Hall, State College and others....

then you have your regular shows. sure they are a blast, fun, but they don't quite have that extra wow factor.

I don't know if Philly is the greatest all time or not, but it is in that classic must listen catagory.

    Agree 100%

The last two nights in Philadelphia, the entire atmosphere, the uniqueness,
the excitement level amongst both the fans And the band, which was evident,
    will never be replicated. Never.

Yeah, hearing Angel live would be about the only thing I could think of to top those shows.
    Nice shirt.

I'm still not entirely sure that it actually happened, maybe it was all a dream.. One day I will have a bootleg of it and I guess that will confirm that it really happened.. I left there hoarse, thirsty, tired, exhausted, and elated!! I gotta say that as long a set as it was, it seemed to be over in a flash.. It just flew by.. No telling what they have in store for us this spring... I doubt a show will go that Looooooonnnnnggggg, but no telling what other little gem they will dust off and surprise us with.. I knocked nearly half of my list of unheard live songs off that night...

How to top the 4 Spectrum shows.
    1) Obtain time Machine (I believe Dick Chaney's earthquake machine has this function)
    2) Go to 5/3/2003
    3) Travel to State College, PA
    4) Obtain Front Row Tickets
    5) Enjoy the greatest rock concert ever!

Philly 3 proves that hype means nothing. You never know when their next epic show will happen...

Although I agree with Speedy - Philly definitely scratched the itch so I'm not too upset about missing them this tour.
I smile, but who am I kidding...

I actually debated not going to MSG because I didn't want to be let down after Philly (every show, it is like one huge show in my head). But i am just going in expecting a great show, not a show that will be as crazy as Philly, and I know they won't disappoint.
    2008 - Camden, NJ 1
    2009 - Philadelphia, PA x4
2010 - Newark, NJ, New York City, NY x2
    2012 - Philadelphia, PA
2013 - Chicago, IL, Philadelphia, PA x2, Hartford, CT
    2016 - Philadelphia, PA x2, New York City, NY 2, Fenway 2

True I wasn't at State College, but I do have the boot... It was a good, no a GREAT show.. but it doesn't even come close to Halloween/World Series/Last public show EVER at the Spectrum... EPIC!! I mean, Jezzus.. He played BUGS!!! Out of My Mind!! You've seen the setlist... and I had the worst seats I have ever had for a show... Still.. A-freaking-mazing....

Everybody said they wouldn't top the 3 Mansfield shows in 03, but they did it in Philly. Maybe if another sacred arena is about to be leveled, PJ will get the call and top Philly. You never know.

I had the same thought when I was trying to decide if I was going to try for tix this time around. In my experience, nothing can top Philly 3 and 4. Unless I get to sit on Eddie's lap or some crazy crap like that.

But I do agree that there are 'epic' shows and shows that you still have a blast at. Columbus will be the latter. Or maybe the former. You never know.......
We're all different behind the eyes.

I was at State College, I was at Buffalo the night before, I was at all 4 Philly shows, I was at the Boston 3 experiment, I was in Toledo for Neil Young, I was at the Borgata, I was at the Gorge, I was at Wavhovia 2005, I was at MSG.... with many shows in between. I've been to my share of amazing shows, and Philly 4 doesn't make my top 5. Philly 4 wasn't even the best of the 4 Philly shows. It was amazing from a setlist point of view, but it was forced. Anyone who experience the magic that is State College, and Philly 4 knows the difference. One just happened, one was forced. One show you couldn't pry the guys off the stage, one show they kept looking at their watches.

You have to be careful comparing setlists over time. Some of the shows I have seen since State College, make the State College Setlist look a little more pedestrian. But that can't take away from the setlist as heard that night.

The best Pearl Jam show is always the next one.

I can already see people coming to the board after Boston/MSG/insert show here saying, "Blah, it wasn't as good as Philly". You can't think that way. Philly was a once in a lifetime experience for the fans and probably for the band.

Sometimes shows get too much hype. In Philly's case, it was deserved. 4 stand-alone shows on the east coast, and the closing of a historic building.

I remember people hyping the hell out of MSG/Boston shows in 08, and little ol' Hartford came in and was a better show than all 4 MSG/Boston shows. You never know what you're going to get at a show, which is only 1 of 1344234234343 reasons I love this band.

They gotta break curfew, and that will cost the band thousands of dollars if they do it each minute @ MSG. I wonder why certain arena's charge bands if they play over a certain time limit.

Besides the money factory....this is why I am skipping MSG. I usually hit those shows but between the 4 Philly shows...I heard pretty much every song I could possibly want to hear plus all of Backspace. I don't see any reason to drop $80 again because those shows won't be topped.
