Both tracks from Binaural are beautiful. Does anyone have any info behind the writings for either of these two songs? I would love to know more.
Just a thought....

Binaural was released in 2000, and Beth and Eddies divorce was final in 2000. Sounds about right.

light years is really an emotional song...it somehow speaks about losing someone and acknowledging his impact to one's life...

    I quote...

"At the Pinkpop Festival in 2000, Eddie Vedder dedicated the song to Diane Muus from Sony Music, a friend of the band who passed away at the age of 33 in 1997.[5] He said there are "times you have got friends that don't fuck up at all and are great people. And then you just lose them for some reason. They are off the planet and you never had a chance to say goodbye. I only mention this because there was a person we used to know here and that was Diane and ah, we never got a chance to say goodbye. This is goodbye. And if you've got good friends, love them while they're here."

yeah it does. that was one of the few songs my old band would cover from time to time.

we did it about idk 30 tmes and then one night BOOM! i just broke down on stage while singing it. idk what happened.
kinda felt like a dick and stupid, but it was a very emotional night.
    Peace, Love.

Both songs are beautiful lyrically and musically, but in concert- Id rather hear Parting Ways, on CD- Light Years, on vinyl- Parting Ways.

The beauty of music is that anyone can have their own personal interpretation.
I use Light Years to get me through something I am going through right now but in a postive way. It doesn't make me sad anymore. It gives me hope.

Ive understood feelings and i understood words but how could you be taken away. Great line im gonna go with Light Years. I sang that song at karioke once. Was dealin with loss at that time and it realy helped express my feelings. Wasnt gonna be mistaken for Eddie singing it though.

There's a handful of intros Ed's wandered through like this, but I've not heard the actual person before, it's usually vague. Thanks for posting this.

"hammers made of wood", so poignant

I spent a lot of time with Katowice II as my mother passed in February, and replayed it this morning just to listen to his chat. Still brings a tear for sure. "This is one called Light Years, and uh ... well ... yeah. It's got a bunch of meanings, to me ... and maybe you ..."

    fuckin' beautiful :o

Shit, that is what I thought the first time I heard it...I was stressed the f out!

On a side note...I prefer puzzles and games over light years or parting ways.
