DVDs released this week
By Curt Fields

The Washington Post

CHUCK ZLOTNICK / AP

Emile Hirsch in "Into the Wild," being released in an extras-free single-disc edition and a two-disc special collector's edition.
Notable DVDs being released today include:

"Into the Wild" (R) and "Into the Wild: Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition" (R): This "pulses with the energy of a breakneck road trip through America," in the words of Washington Post critic Ann Hornaday, and is a "powerful and poetic hymn to America." Directed by Sean Penn and starring Emile Hirsch, the single-disc edition is extras-free. The two-disc version offers a short on "The Story, the Characters" and one called "The Experience." They're reasonably informative, but at only a little more than a half-hour, you're probably better off getting the cheaper single-disc release

I really want to pick this up, but the "special edition" does not have to much special on it, and I have a feelling they will release a " ultra special directors cut oscars edition" that will probably come out in like 2 months with all the good stuff on it

But it didn't win an Oscar...

Why would they release another one with more special features in a few months?

You must not be familiar with DVD releases.

This was gonna be my first Blu-Ray purchase, but I see it's just on HD. HD is dead. I sure hope they release it on Blu-Ray soon. D'oh!

Sorry, the Oscar part was meant to be sarcastic. But you know they will have a directors cut sometime and will probably include interviews with Sean and Ed plus all kinds of other stuff.

now is the time to pick up an HD DVD player. the price is sinking as they are obviously 'obsolete' now, and i can use it on all of my old regular DVDs so don't have to buy a blu-ray player.

I bought both formats today. The HD-DVD copy is gonna be a collectable item, seeing the format has bite the dust. I can see the film in a few more months be available on Blu-ray. Funny it's just a 2 dollar difference for the HD-DVD to DVD.

I got the two disc special edition today. I watched some of the bonus features and it wasn't anything special. I'll sit down and watch the whole film tonight.

The thing that really ticked me off is that Walmart had the special edition priced at $24.99 and the standard dvd at $15.96...that's a huge difference...I couldn't see myself paying $24.99 for ANY DVD so I paid the cheaper price...I just don't remember ever paying anything extra for the special editions/deleted scenes disc/any of the extra's....the packaging was so cheap for the standard dvd, figured they'd put it in a paper bag if they could...

They do this with DVD releases all the time. It's a pain in the ass for the customers, but just another opportunity for the people behind the film and producers to get more money.

ITW is one of the last two HD-DVD's realesed by paramount - that's pretty cool in some way. Too bad there isn't a special on the music, or like they could have waited and have had a concert with eddie or something on there...

you mean the one he did with just celebrities and shit. maybe that's why it was pushed back. on the extras also they talk about the music.

I wanted to read the book first...paint my own mental picture, then see it through Mr.Penn's. I just watched the film, and I have to say he did an amazing job. The soundtrack (obviously) enhances it, but wow! if you get a chance to read the book too....do yourself a favour!

I could not put it down, especially knowing that seeing the film was in my future!

got our copy...will be watching it, again, probably over the weekend. :)

in regards to threads, i think there have been PLENTY of ITW threads, so perhaps no one felt the need? this kind of info is so readily available, so really...don't need *reminders* here that it released on dvd yesterday. just my 2 cents.

The second disc is actually very informative. Worth watching. If you have seen the film I highly recommend watching it again. As a PJ fan I have to admit when I saw it in the theatre I paid more attention to the music then I did the film. On the old home DVD the music isn't as powerful and it's easier to actually get into the film. Boy some of those acting performances sure were something. Hal Holbrook, Catherine Keener were awesome. Im over the kid not getting an oscar nomination. He was good and has promise for sure. But he's young and needs some more films under his belt I think.

Read the book, Thought it was great! Loved the soundtrack. So I was excited to go out and buy the movie when it came out. I NEVER buy movies I haven't seen already so this was going to be a unique thing for me. At the last minute I decided to rent it before buyig it. I think this really turned out to be the right decision for me. I will own it at some point but I'll wait until the price drops down the road. The movie didn't awe me like the book did. Don't get me wrong I thought it was really good but the book really grabbed me. I loved the way they used Eddie's music in the movie. Perfect fit. And I thought the cinematography and acting was superb. The ending sequence with Chris in the bus is chilling!

I'm not bashing the movie here...just to be clear. I really liked it but the book was better IMO.

I do agree with you as well in that I was more impressed with the book, and I think it has to do with someone so accustomed to the outdoors as Krakauer is...he has wisdom far beyond anything I can imagine.....read his book Into Thin Air and you will get that sense as well (if you haven't already). It's about his Mt Everest summit, and the morality of climbing.....equally as interesting...

It's just that there are so few really GREAT movies anymore that this still stood out as incredible!

I just connected more with the book. It was great how Penn got the detail of the bus and what it must have been like for Chris up there. The narration that was wrote by Chris' real life sister was great. I didn't really care for the slabs scenes and the actor that played Rainey. It all seemed to light for me. Love Vince Vaughn but that he was playing himself more than he should have been.

ok now it does sound like I'm bashing the movie... I swear I liked it

I hear that. The best part of the book was the insight from Krakauer. I had such amazingly high expectations of this film that I can see why you might feel that way. I also don't think that you are bashing the movie.
