Anybody out there have particularly nerdy (in an English major way) taste in literature? Want to discuss books written by dead white guys over 50 years ago?
I know there's already a book thread, but y'all were talking about Stephen King and I couldn't take it. I'm sorry....that's totally cool, just not my bag! (I'm not a TOTAL snob....ok, well, maybe I am  )

Faulker, Joyce, James, Hemingway, Greene, Nabokov.....anybody?

Nerd. As a jock, it's my duty to pick on book worms. I can't believe anyone would take the time to write a book much less read one...

Stephen King is trash fiction, not that there is anything wrong with trash fiction per se, but let's call it what it is.

Umm....I kind of hate him? I feel like his earlier stuff has some merit, obviously, but his later works seem to be rushed, mass produced, lowest-common-denominator "literature". Airplane reading.

Sorry....I'm not trying to be a bitch. Just my honest opinion. I'm not hating on those who love him. He just isn't for me. I read a lot of his earlier books when I was young and tried to pick up on some of the more recent things in the years that followed, always based on recommendations from friends, and I seemed to be consistently disappointed.

Relax, my little nerdling, I'm a writer. However, I do love to fight and have no problem using ground and pound techniques on weak girls.

I know that but there's nothing wrong with reading his stuff... and just because you appreciate his 'trash fiction' doesn't mean you're not considered a book nerd. I know lots of people who regularly read his stuff that are some of the biggest book nerds going...

That's a good point. I should possibly change the subject to "Classic Literature Nerds"?

I never said you couldn't be a nerd AND read Stephen King. In fact, the two often go hand in hand, like nerds and comic books.

I'm a proud book nerd and King fan, though I thought the ending to his latest book was a little lame :-(
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

If you're a book nerd (or classic literature nerd ;) ), you might like this site:

    http://www.librarything.com/

Good place for finding info about books, reviews, cataloging your own library, discussions about books.

I use it for my "To Read" list. Since forever, I'm always finding out about some book that I want to read, then I can't remember the correct title or author, etc. Now I have a great list of titles although it's so huge and I'm so far behind that I can never die.

I don't post there but there are threads about every kind of book. Probably the most erudite message board I've ever seen. People still get snarky but they do it in complete, grammatically correct sentences.

    ************

BTW I may qualify as I book nerd. 2 degrees in English (probably before most people here were born :shifty: :P ). Somehow reading so much literature turned me off to modern fiction and I tend to read a lot of non-fiction like history and current events.
