How Come People Hate on U2?

I used to be an avid fan of U2 and have practically everything they ever released on vinyl up to the release of "The Joshua Tree".
I certainly don't hate them, they just don't do it for me anymore. "Achtung Baby" is a great album, "Pop" is very good and Zooropa is just not my thing - I don't like the style they took. "All That You Can't..." and "How To Dismantle.." were very dissapointing to me, particularly the latter.
Even with all the negativity that surrounds Bono's strange persona and the slight hypocrisy that the band sometimes display, I still feel that if they went back to the raw basics of what they do best, they could still produce quality material.
The hate that some people have for them is born out of nothing more than peer pressure and the attempt to look hip and cool. Coldplay seem to suffer the same fate. It's gonna be a glorious day...0 -
I personally could care less about a bands ego, as long as I like their music. And I happen to like U2.
Plus I found it cool as hell when he was on one episode of Entourage.5/28/06, 6/27/08, 10/28/09, 5/18/10, 5/21/10

I'm open to almost every genre of music even country, besides variety to me is the spice of my music life. I gather sometimes most of the hate towards U2 maybe due to how big they've gotten over these later years. I'm sure some of that so called hate would thrown towards Pearl Jam if they ever got that big around the world. It goes with that territory the bigger you get the more detractors that also jump aboard.
Question would you ever want for Pearl Jam to get as big a fanbase around the world as U2?
Peace
hating a band cause they are popular all over the world is utter nonsense to me. of course i hope the whole world turns onto my bands(why not! lol)
like you, i have an deep appreciation for all music and i simply don't understand how people can hate music that they don't like....especially if they are music fans in the first place0 -

Okay, if you're bored with them that's one thing, but there are a lot of folks around here who claim they hate them. That's like hating The Beatles or Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd. The word just doesn't fit these bands if you're any kind of fan of rock music. I have been disappointed in them a lot since the mid 90's, but their new album was one of their best, and Achtung Baby was the best album to come out in 1991. Yeah, I said it. Their catalog rivals any bands', in my opinion.
This is the U2 complaint I disagree with the most. How many pop bands besides the Beatles have branched out in a way like U2 did with Achtung Baby, Zooropa, and even Pop. Those three albums came directly after Joshua Tree which was the pinnacle of the "U2 Sound" that existed previously.
Its ok to not like them but you haven't listened to them enough to dub them uncreative.#FHP0 -
I've never seen them either but I'm pretty sure they play the same set day-in day-out on tour.#FHP0

I've seen U2 and I enjoyed their older hits (there is something impressive about watching 80k people standing in a field singing Sunday Bloody Sunday) but Bono is such a toolbag and really needs to STFU during shows!0

i am a big fan of u2, but if you cant see the reason why people hate them, you are blind. bono is sort of messianic, he has even admitted it. he has a big ego. I also think their music is stadium/arena friendly. this isnt a small indie band, on an indie label, trading mp3's on pitchfork. this is a massive, huge band, one of the biggest bands in the world, truely. any person that only is into unsigned, or indie bands is gonna dislike the exposure, press and hype u2 receives. the band is politically outspoken. anytime you speak out, some people are gonna complain, thats just the way it is. finally, they are very extravagent and like to spend money. bono aint living in a modest home. he lives it up. and he/they dont hide this fact. i will never forget the interview they gave years ago, the band discussing how castro's vision of communism was preferable to the prevailing capitalism worldwide, all the while, they are flying on a private jet, sipping expensive champagne.
all that doesnt change the fact their music is great.0 -

It's all about the music. The music is the reason why I love them. The Joshua Tree was the first album I heard and I loved that album. It wasn't until I heard Achtung Baby that I knew they were going to be one of my favorite bands. Although Achtung took me about 10 (yes I know, 10!) listens to get used to that album, I absolutely love that album.Shows: 6.27.08 Hartford, CT/5.15.10 Hartford, CT/6.18.2011 Hartford, CT (EV Solo)/10.19.13 Brooklyn/10.25.13 Hartford

off topic, i searched march 13th on wiki to see if there was any birth or death that might influence the snl setlist and it's adam's 50th. someone please sic that snuggleton guy on the band so we get full version of a sort of homecoming. that'll quiet the haters.0

I wouldn't say I hate U2, but I'm not exactly crazy about them. A few reasons:
-They havent really had a good album in the past 15-20 years.
-Bono is a douche
-Their ticket prices are ridiculously high
-Their guitar player is named "The Edge".0 -
Teaching an entire english speaking generation that catorce comes after tres in Spanish is pretty inexcusable!
I only own 2 or 3 albums ... but, I saw them live in 1999 or 2000, or so ... they were fantastic. They seem to enjoy Boston."You're one of the few Red Sox fans I don't mind." - Newch91
