why is hate such a strong word, but no one has a problem when someone says they 'love' a band?
Well I think of it as a strong word when used musically or in sports, it's just a band or team even I cannot stand both. In sports I cannot stand the Yankees and the Redskins (their name alone is reason to dislike them), Canadiens, Lakers I find it hard for me to hate them for some reason. Others are quite comfortable hating teams or other bands to me it seems like a lot more energy wasted hating on another team or band.
I frequent other band sites like a fan RUSH site. Where a few there HATE my Pearl Jam avatar even though they haven't worded it that way as yet. I've told a few there on PJ's site I have a RUSH avatar so don't be hating so much.
There should be more energy placed in love than in hate, one can really dislike someone, something without it having to be hateful even my ex.

I really think U2 is kind of heading into another direction with the release of "No Line..." It has a space-like feel to it and the Morrocan sound of it. I can't wait to see what they put on the new album coming out either this year or next year. I think they'll expand on "No Line..." like they did with Zooropa after Achtung Baby. We'll see.

I just don't get how anyone can say they hate U2. Okay, if you're bored with them that's one thing, but there are a lot of folks around here who claim they hate them. That's like hating The Beatles or Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd. The word just doesn't fit these bands if you're any kind of fan of rock music. I have been disappointed in them a lot since the mid 90's, but their new album was one of their best, and Achtung Baby was the best album to come out in 1991. Yeah, I said it. Their catalog rivals any bands', in my opinion.
U2 is uncreative and repeatative, they don't even compare with the other bands listed in this post.
This is the U2 complaint I disagree with the most. How many pop bands besides the Beatles have branched out in a way like U2 did with Achtung Baby, Zooropa, and even Pop. Those three albums came directly after Joshua Tree which was the pinnacle of the "U2 Sound" that existed previously.
Its ok to not like them but you haven't listened to them enough to dub them uncreative.
I completely agree with you. No other band has done that besides the Beatles. Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, The White Album...all creative and each one is branched out. Really, only the Beatles and U2 have been able to branch out and be successful with those albums.
Also, POP is VERY underrated.

not to sound "preachy"...just my random thoughts on why...
ask yourself this.
how much do you really LOVE music?
does it connect with your very inner core? does it help you live life? thrive? ever get the goosebumps from listening to killer live pearl jam?
if you don't absolutely LOVE music, then, imo, you can't exactly fully understand how it feels when someone uses the word hate to describe music that they don't love, that you might.
go ahead and hate olives, or war, or gas prices, but please don't use it when describing music
music is so sacred. it comes from the same place that religion comes from. please don't hate god/budda/?...it's fine if you love him, or don't love him, but...

but if you can have the ability to love it because it speaks to your soul...etc. etc. etc. then it should be able to do the same thing in the opposite manner and someone should be able to hate it.
If you hate it that's fine by me, as long as you don't think that everyone should hate it as well. That's where you're crossing a line. Same goes for loving something...just because you love it, that's fine but just don't start thinking that everyone else (especially the artist) should love it and find it to be sacred as well
If I listen to a song and my brain and soul begins to feel numb because it is so painfully dull it can make me cringe and I actually being to feel dumber after listening to it, that is a sensation that I hate.
i have a great appreciation for all music, cause i deeply understand what my music does to me. there is no hate. none, what so ever. just because i don't like it has nothing to with me hating it. its always 110% personal opinion, and i respect everyone's personal opinion, whether i agree or not.
besides that, hate breeds hate.

I too have an appreciation for music and one's likes and dislikes are all a personal preference. I'm open to almost every genre of music even country, besides variety to me is the spice of my music life. I gather sometimes most of the hate towards U2 maybe due to how big they've gotten over these later years. I'm sure some of that so called hate would thrown towards Pearl Jam if they ever got that big around the world. It goes with that territory the bigger you get the more detractors that also jump aboard.
Question would you ever want for Pearl Jam to get as big a fanbase around the world as U2?

I used to be an avid fan of U2 and have practically everything they ever released on vinyl up to the release of "The Joshua Tree".
I certainly don't hate them, they just don't do it for me anymore. "Achtung Baby" is a great album, "Pop" is very good and Zooropa is just not my thing - I don't like the style they took. "All That You Can't..." and "How To Dismantle.." were very dissapointing to me, particularly the latter.
Even with all the negativity that surrounds Bono's strange persona and the slight hypocrisy that the band sometimes display, I still feel that if they went back to the raw basics of what they do best, they could still produce quality material.
The hate that some people have for them is born out of nothing more than peer pressure and the attempt to look hip and cool. Coldplay seem to suffer the same fate.

hating a band cause they are popular all over the world is utter nonsense to me. of course i hope the whole world turns onto my bands(why not! lol)

It must be me but I have a hard time listening to the Edge play the same thing over and over for an hour. I gained a little appreciation for him after watching 'It Might Get Loud' and realizing that he himself knows he's not good.
I've seen U2 and I enjoyed their older hits (there is something impressive about watching 80k people standing in a field singing Sunday Bloody Sunday) but Bono is such a toolbag and really needs to STFU during shows!
i am a big fan of u2, but if you cant see the reason why people hate them, you are blind. bono is sort of messianic, he has even admitted it. he has a big ego. I also think their music is stadium/arena friendly. this isnt a small indie band, on an indie label, trading mp3's on pitchfork. this is a massive, huge band, one of the biggest bands in the world, truely. any person that only is into unsigned, or indie bands is gonna dislike the exposure, press and hype u2 receives. the band is politically outspoken. anytime you speak out, some people are gonna complain, thats just the way it is. finally, they are very extravagent and like to spend money. bono aint living in a modest home. he lives it up. and he/they dont hide this fact. i will never forget the interview they gave years ago, the band discussing how castro's vision of communism was preferable to the prevailing capitalism worldwide, all the while, they are flying on a private jet, sipping expensive champagne.
all that doesnt change the fact their music is great.

It wasn't until I heard Achtung Baby that I knew they were going to be one of my favorite bands. Although Achtung took me about 10 (yes I know, 10!) listens to get used to that album, I absolutely love that album.

-They havent really had a good album in the past 15-20 years.
-Bono is a douche
-Their ticket prices are ridiculously high
-Their guitar player is named "The Edge".
I only own 2 or 3 albums ... but, I saw them live in 1999 or 2000, or so ... they were fantastic. They seem to enjoy Boston.
