TSUNAMI WATCH IN HAWAII

edited February 2010 in All Encompassing Trip
Saw this on the early morning news this AM,

They said there would be a statewide siren ringing up all throughout the islands at the same time ( 6 am Hawaii Time ) and that theyd be evacuating all the people to higher ground.

They say its the first time that technology has predicted such an event so long before it strikes?

Imagine, i tidal wave surging on you and theres very little you can do about it ?

This apparently stems from the Earthquake that striked earlier today in Santiago, Chile .

Heres hoping all those folks are okay and all the people in Hawaii .

But i'ts still early in Hawai'i so any fans or errant band members can get ready for emergency duty. The Chile earthquake was 8.8 one of the largest in many years, just under the one that cause the tsunami in Banda Ache much bigger than Haiti. The Hawai'i tsunami is be the equal of the one in 1965, however, remember deprending on ocean conditions the risk can go way up or dissapear, be ready
I havent seen a warning for Oz and but its in the line of fire, Like wise NZ, and many small islands must be at some risk. The entire pacific rim encluding west coast of US, Alaska, Alutians, Russia, Japan and down toward Malaysia and the Philipines are marked in red, so if you know people there, wake em up. Hazard maps and info are here

  • i am here!!!

i was wakened by the tsunami sirens only moments ago!!!

they are calling for a 12 foot sugre to strike around 11:15a island time

i am here visiting family on the big island, north kohala coast, a couple miles up the road from the kawaihae harbor. this is the last day of a two week vacation and i am scheduled to fly out at midnight tonight local time. that of course is all very tenuous at the moment.

the police have been by and the phone is ringing constantly. as it stands our location is higher on a cliffside very near the coast. we are said to be safe and not in need of evacuation but to be ready incase...

it is at the same time creepy and fascinating!!! i certainly hope everyone makes it to safe ground, then i intend to make sure i am in a good vantage point and watch the action

    wish us luck!!!

Wow the boyfriend and i were JUST in Tofino earlier this week... We actually joked while driving up a mountain that we would be safe fom a tsunami...

I don't think they expect it to hit the BC coast very hard but there was a warning here too
live pearl jam is best pearl jam
  • even though the main thrust now is just south of Hawaii, it will hit Hawai'i , but Japan and all the way down to Oz and NZ. The Earthqauke was 500 to 1000 times bigger than Haiti but they use earthquake standards for the buildings in Chile for new buildings. Watch CNN now Sandy

this has got to be terrifying.
( I live on the oceanfront and can't even begin to imagine )

hope all the Pacific Island people get to higher ground and are okay !

thinking of everyone in hawaii...stay safe
  • we're watchin the news pretty closely. early indications are not too alarming. i guess it has hit marquesas or something and wasnt so bad. they think it may be a smaller than initially expected.

they are urging people to be smart and cautious, of course there are still some thrill seekers paddling out!!

all people should be safe if they heed proper warnings but there is still danger and possible damage. i know the harbors are a large concern. if they get wrecked that means the major lifelines of hawaii are shut down for x amount of days

but all told it is more thrilling than terrifying once the initial shock and concern is assuaged

i'll try to post pics if there is anything to see!

Projections range from 2' to 7' with the first waves to arrive in about an hour and a half or so. Hope it's closer to a foot or two than seven.

ouch!, Well sounds like they have had enough time to somewhat prepare for it, instead of being caught off guard.

Tsunami watch for Australia and NZ too....at 8am there will be our biggest tide of the whole year....then the effects of tsunami are supposed to hit around 8.30am....it's now 7am. I'm right on the north east coast....but the Great Barrier Reef will block any waves here.

A 20cm tsunami has already hit NZ islands about an hour ago....and they're expecting waves of up to 3 metres soon.
