I would not say i hate them but they are completly overblown.

I actually saw them live once too back in 95 so idon't want to hear that "you had to see them live shit"

I'm not downing them they make cool music for the type of music they make i was just never overly impressed

  • yeah, i kinda hate them. And I know hate is a strong word.
  • if your gonna hate a band, seems silly to hate them merely for their drug use. Not liking the style of music, or the lyrics or the lead singers voice, that seems legitimate, but hating them because they use drugs? Someone ought to post that video of Hicks and his view on all this.

i have an uncle who is a musician and he has stated that he felt really turned off by how prevelant drugs were in the music scene. its just common practice. I am a straight edger myself, but i think its pretty naive to dislike a band just because they indulge. Go through the top bands in history list: beatles, stones, led zep, dylan, pink floyd, hell even PJ have all had dabbles with drugs.

This. I'm not the biggest fan, but they're a fun band.

The song is a classic. Like them or not, these here are some great lyrics:

Early in the morning, risin' to the street
Light me up that cigarette and I strap shoes on my feet
Got to find a reason, a reason things went wrong
Got to find a reason why my money's all gone
I got a Dalmatian, and I can still get high
I can play the guitar like a mother fuckin' riot

Life is too short, so love the one you got
'Cause you might get run over or you might get shot
Never start no static, I just get it off my chest
Never had to battle with no bulletproof vest
Take a small example, take a tip from me
Take all of your money, give it all to charity

Love is what I got, it's within my reach
Yeah, and the sublime style's still straight from long beach
It all comes back to you, you'll finally get what you deserve
Try and test that, you're bound to get served
    Love's what I got, don't start a riot
You'll feel it when the dance gets hot

Lovin' is what I got, I said remember that
Lovin' is what I got, I remember that
Lovin' is what I got, I said remember that
    Lovin' is what I got

Why I don't cry when my dog runs away
I don't get angry at the bills I have to pay
I don't get angry when my mom smokes pot
Hits the bottle and goes right to the rock
Fuckin' and fightin', it's all the same
Livin' with Louie dog's the only way to stay sane
Let the lovin', let the lovin' come back to me

My intent was not about drug use directly. Hell, I'm a fan of a lot of bands that have suffered drug casualties (and which band hasn't in one way or another, really). The reason I don't like them is that the version of Sublime that is stuck in popular memory is the easy-going, party band. What's not necessarily remembered is the fact that Bradley ultimately ended up choosing drugs over responsibility for his family, and left his young kid without a dad. That's what I'm reminded of every time I hear them on the radio.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Family wise? We've got a few. Doesn't mean I need to approve of their choices and the reprecussions of them. They (and their families) have to deal with the fallout.

Me personally? Ever since I had kids my desire to drink/smoke has diminished considerably.

Lots of other comments beat me to it, but YES, I CAN'T STAND Sublime.

Someone said, "well don't listen to them." I would cheerfully ignore this extinct mediocre poor excuse of a band if their horrible songs weren't on the damn radio every 15 minutes!

Drugs or no drugs, they sucked. Couldn't stand them in the 90s, and stil can't. Every song sounds the same, and every loser pot-smoker type loves to listen to them all the freakin time. Not to offend anyone, but those who do nothing but smoke up is what I mean - don't have any problem with those who want to light up on occasion.

  • Lame band with lame lyrics. My buddy would always listen to them when we drove to University and I would always contemplate throwing myself out of his car or grabbing the steering wheel and take us into on-coming traffic. Let's just say it was the last semester I car-pooled with him.

  • seems like most folks equate people who smoke way too much ganga with sublime, and hate on them equally.

welcome to the bash sublime/stoners thread. enjoy

i still like sublime. still easy to play on the uke. also still don't think their lyrics are dumb - they rhyme and fit and are clever - not deep, but not dumb.

I think someone who does nothing but smoke all day is a loser who needs to grow up. If someone just does it every weekend or at parties thats cool. Also the drug references isnt the only reason why i dont like sublime i love many bands who are involved with them or who sing abt their addictions

kinda like kurdt right. but i guess he gets a pass cause he was a "hero" to a generation.

sublime are a cool party/pot head band. nothing more then that. they made cool chill music. 40oz to freedom is still to this day my fave summer cd.

Just to re-clarify - I meant to say "pothead," not "pot smoker." I had a busy day and couldn't get my thoughts exactly straight today, but I had to weigh in on this thread. Shouldn't have smoked up this morning. And yeah, Sublime still sucks, even if they don't exist anymore.
