I am as a big a Pearl Jam fan as anyone on here, but Ten is no way a better debut album than Appetite for Destruction. That record single handedly changed music in the '80's. You can not say the same for Ten. It was Nirvana's Nevermind (i know it is their 2nd record) which changed music forever in the '90's & The Strokes Is This It in the '00's.

is it fair to hold GnR in higher regard because the rest of the music sucked at that time? Looking at Appetite vs. TEN to me TEN holds up much better. Appetite had 3 classics, TEN had 4 and the 'others' songs on TEN are way stronger than the other songs on Appetite, at least in my opinion. It is close, but I think TEN wins out.

Well in my opinion there are only two filler songs on Appetite, Anything Goes & Think About You.

I am hard pressed to think of any filler on Ten except for maybe Deep & or Garden. However I feel Appetite was more "revolutionary" than Ten. But that is just my opinion.

For me, GnR's music strikes me as a bit childish (even the name, Appetite for Destruction  . I could never get in to that band, and for that reason there are plenty of bands and artists that I think had better debut albums - including Ten.

Childish? Sure the chorus to Paradise City is a little juvenile but thats about it. The name Appetite for Destruction came from a painting which is used as the inside cover of the record.

I have NEVER understood the genuflecting that people do to both GNR and Appetite for Destruction! Slash had some great riffs for sure and there are some good tunes on there - but Axl's voice to me is like nails on a chalkboard! It's F'n UNLISTENABLE! I'd vote for Kanye West first (and I HATE Kanye West!)

The fact that GNR may have stood out like a turd floating in 80's musical sewage does not impress me. I grew up on the classic rock of the 60's and 70's. For me, there was nothing better than the Who. Then came disco, and Madonna and Rap ... and Jesus Christ I thought good musical taste was dead and gone forever. Until Ten. I saw PJ perform Alive and Porch on SNL and ran out the next day to buy it. This band brought me back and showed me that GREAT music was still capable of being made and sold. From there I turned on to Nirvana and Alice in Chains and numerous others. It was a rebirth for me musically. GNR doesn't hold a candle to PJ -- and Appetite is at best a slow-witted cousin to Ten.

    Nuff said.

I voted Hootie. I'm not joking, and I stand by my decision. The "college" sound of the late 80's and early 90's is just as important as grunge, if not more. I will defend PJ to the day I die, but "Cracked Rear View" was the first cassette I bought with my own money (age 13), and I don't regret it.

Edit: "Ten" is the BEST album. I voted based on impact of culture/society. Grunge had Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins (I understand they are not, but many lumped them in back in 1992), Mudhoney and way more. Aside from R.E.M, (and Better than Ezra, which was a 1 hit wonder at the time), College Rock had nothing.

Okay, that post was pretty funny. Ballot-stuffing? I guess someone forgot just how insane(ly dedicated) we are.

But, seriously, responding both to Gibson's very brave Hootie confession (sorry -- I loathed that band) and to the MTV mention of The Cars' debut album: While I was a good Ten Club member and voted for PJ, had The Cars been on that list, I would have had to cast my vote for it. I was crazy about The Cars in junior-high school, and the debut album still sounds great to me, start to finish. And oh, don't get me started about Ben Orr's voice. :D

Obviously my favorite band is Pearl Jam, and obviously Kanye West is a jackass for the Taylor Swift (who by the way is completely and utterly overrated, so Kanye had a point, but used the wrong platform (no pun intended)to state his views) incident, but Kanye's debut is definitely a top 5 or 6 rap album of all time. The catchy hooks and creative lyrics along with the use of samples was outstanding....I was addicted to it in 04.....His newer shit sucks, but that album was for real. In conclusion, i voted for TEN :D

Voted for ten, but Appetite for Destruction is an amazing album, aside from the well known songs, there are alot of less known great songs on that album.

I remembered a while ago someone told me that there was no way that this message board influence all of the major polls out there.

Well, it looks like I'm right again.
