a simple Yes or No to decide if they should play the halftime show within the next 5 years

i would imagine a lot of No's.

    NO.

Sorry, I know you said a simple "yes" or "no", but I want to elaborate. Before putting any thought into it, I believed that they would easily have 4 hugely popular tunes that were generic enough to fit into a 4-song Super Bowl medley. But after thinking about it, what could they play? "Alive" is a big well-known anthem, but is the lyrical content something that would fit? "Jeremy" definitely is not... don't want songs about a teenager killing himself during the Super Bowl! I guess I could see "Alive", "Even Flow", "Betterman" and "The Fixer" in a medley.

Keep in mind, I hope that this never ever happens.

  • yes. but I agree with the last poster. The superbowl halftime show is more suited to your average stadium rock band, like The Who, Aerosmith, U2, etc. Not bands with songs with actual meaning behind them that might depress the crowd!

  • YES.

I long ago stopped caring much about this "sell out" shit that so many people seem so hung on. Unless they appeared on a show that was degrading to music or the industry (ie American Idol) or on a commercial that went against what they have spoken out against in the past (ie Hummers), what's the big deal?

The Super Bowl may be a corporate headfuck in terms of advertising etc., but I don't see how it would degrade the band or bring down my opinion of them.

The way I see it, PJ at the Super Bowl would mean more exposure for them, more money for them, and more live PJ for me. Sounds like a recipe for a big fat YES.

    No WAY.

Unless Eddie pulls a Jim Morrison and swears at the camera and then has a wardrobe mis-function by dropping his pants.
  • No. The mere thought of them cutting their hit songs down and molding them together into a medley just seems wrong. I understand them omitting a swear word on tv, but I just can't envision them ever just playing 1-2 minutes of each song before moving on to the next.
  • I'm not going to give you a YES/NO answer. I'm going to give you a sarcastic, profanity-filled, 12 minute setlist, of course!

Leash (get out of my fucken face!)

Howard Stern said this morning something to the effect of "you know who I wish would play the super bowl next year? Pearl Jam"

I agree, however probably not gonna happen. That said, Eddie is a pretty big sports fan so who knows?

I wish they would. Any opportunity for me to see Pearl Jam, tv or in person, I am happy!

Personally I really don't care. If they do, they do. If not, so be it. But all the people who don't want to see them play a halftime show will watch regardless. You know you would. There was so much shit on this board about them selling out to Target, but we all bought Backspacer, right?

  • No, unless I got to go. Superbowl and PJ? Be a hell of a party.
  • If they did it would just confirm to 99% of the population what they already think......Same thing I said watching Bruce last year and The Who last night......

    Boy, those guys look OLD!

it wouldn't bother me too much. it makes me wonder who else is capable of playing at halftime. thoughts?

  • I could see it happening, but I hope it doesn't. Don't know what any of you thought about The Who yesterday, but it only confirmed, for me, that they need to hang it up. Roger can't sing anymore. Rest of the band looked and sounded great, but Roger's done.

I think the Foo Fighters would be a good SB halftime band.

his lower register is still solid, i think. but the higher he goes, the older he sounds.

I do. Think about the bands/acts that have played the Super Bowl.

    New Kids on the Block
    Gloria Estefan
    Michael Jackson
    Clint Black
    Diana Ross
    TLC
    Chacka Kan
    Phil Collins
    Aerosmith
    US
    Shania Twain
    Janet Jackson
    Paul McCartney
    Rolling Stones
    Prince
    Tom Petty
    Bruce Springsteen
    The Who

Outside of The Who, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty where does PJ fit in here? Not to mention all the bands/performers are either popular with the kids or super fucking old and on their down slope trying to re-kick start their careers.
  • If PJ plays the half time show....then....

    I quit....

...I will storm the location of the Super Bowl in protest...

Of course people will watch. It's the same as 100 million people seeing Janet Jackson's breast pop out with Justin Friggen Timberlake. Most folks who watch the super bowl also watch the half time show. I guess there is always Puppy Bowl to watch instead.

    I would still protest.....angerly.

Are you kidding why all the negativity? I would love to see them during halftime, way exciting, it would be so cool.
They were by far the best band honoring The Who at the Rock Honors show. They would be spectacular at the Superbowl!
It would be another reason to be a proud fan!
  • The only negative I can think of is that they would have even more exposure and maybe recruit new fans, thus more people at concerts, less chance of awesome tix, etc...and those are all minor problems.

If the half-time was lengthened a little, they could play full songs, which would be awesome.
Do you see the way that tree bends? Does it inspire?

I'll not lose my faith, it's an inside job today

St. Louis 5/4/10 Hope for many more!

absolutely. it'd be nice to have some talent on stage that isn't over 70 years old and doesn't need to lip sync!
