So who at NBC thought it would be a good idea for the special today to be, among other things, fried chicken, “in honor of Black History Month”?

Because, spoiler alert – it wasn’t a good idea at all. And now NBCU employee Questlove is bringing it to the attention of his 1 million plus Twitter followers.

Questlove, the band leader and drummer for The Roots (the house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon) tweeted this picture from the NBC Commissary at 30 Rock, with the comment: “Hmm HR?”

Is me, a white guy (more or less), really liking collard greens akin to one of those white boys who really likes rap and who wears a tilted ballcap?

Anyhow, I was thinking yesterday ... If there was, say, a Thai history month, and the "official food" of said month was green curry (for example), would Thai people get offended, or would they just go "cool, that's one of the foods we like"? Sure, "friend chicken and watermelon" gets used in a derogatory way, and maybe that's the difference. Still, though ... If we are ever going to move past racism, shouldn't we prep ourselves for the very real possibility that different groups prefer different foods?

It brings up an interesting point. Do people like different foods because its what they're culturally brought up with, or is there something in our DNA that predisposes us to liking certain foods?

I wouldn't be shocked if it was both, to some extent. And that's a hilarious quote.

I mean, they must like it. If they don't want to be streotyped into eating chicken all the time, stay out of Popeyes. When I lived in Florida I used to go to Popeyes chicken. I swear everytime I was the only white boy in the joint.

Come to Louisiana sometime - Popeyes is like the UN here. Everyone eats at Popeyes (unless they go to Canes).

Reminds me of a news story after Hurricane Katrina... a news crew was interviewing a woman in New Orleans, and asking her what she was going to do now that the Churches had all gone. Her response was "I don't know about them other people, but I gets my chicken from Popeyes."

    Brilliant.
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

    This is ridiculous.

MLK's favorite meal was Fried Chicken and Collard Greens.

I don't see anything wrong with it. It was his favorite meal. The PC movement has gone too far since its inception.

this thread is a roller coaster of racism and all it took was a fried chicken dinner menu..
I've always said that there is a little racism in EVERYBODY no matter what color they are even if they don't want to admit it
and in my heart of hearts I find it sad and a bump in the road to everybody, I think it's time to move on.

Dude, am I not sure if I am getting your whole meaning, but you seem to suggest that the comments in this thread are racist ... Really? I wasn't lying, I really like the restaurants in Chinatown here and 9 times out of ten, I am the only white guy in these places. And I've gone to three Popeye's chicken places in the U.S., and yep ... White dude, by himself, eating chicken. :)

  • fried chicken and watermelon are two of my favorite foods (and i'm white). i was born in VA and grew up in WV. maybe i was just far enough south to get it? i dunno. i definitely think it's a cultural thing more than anything inherent to someone's race. i actually worked at a popeye's for 4 years when iw as in high school and my freshman year of college. i ate that shit every day! literally! i'm surprised i'm still alive...

I remember it, not the best choice of words because he meant what he said. If you notice after he said collard greens he said something like *or whatever the hell they eat*. All said in what appears to be in anger and frustration because the kid Tiger Woods was kicking ass of the good ole boys of the south at Augusta, Ga I gather. :o

He apologized like they all do and TW accepted it with ease maybe due to he probably doesn't eat collard greens. Like one of TW's bimbos said *He (Tiger Woods) is one of the whitest of white boys*.
