I have a question about "Glorified G".

what does the "G" stand for? I have always assumed it stands for GUN. But i was listening to 93.3 WMMR-Philly and Jackie Bam Bam, after playing the song said the G stands for GANGSTER.

Glorified Gun
or
Glorified Gangster

i tried looking it up on the internet but couldnt find an answer

    Gangster? ha...I believe its Gun.

I had a brother in law tell me that Black was about a camera. He was so into it being a camera I had no doubts at the time he would kill anyone who didnt believe him.

    G is for gun.

    C is for cookie.

From what I've heard or read Dave A. brought a gun into the studio once and Eddie was so opposed and pissed off he wrote the song about it.

yeah i knew that much. its actually preety interesting. most of the lyrics came from a conversation at rehearsal and Ed just wrote down what was being said .
"Glorified G" is an anti-gun song with lyrics mocking gun enthusiasts. The song was inspired by an incident in which drummer Dave Abbruzzese told the band he had just bought two guns which sparked a conversation about guns within the band. Vocalist Eddie Vedder about "Glorified G":

I didn't actually write that song...I was at a band rehearsal and just started writing down these things the guys were talking about. The band were having this conversation and I just took down the dialogue. One of the band members had just bought a gun. It was the drummer, actually. Ask him about it.[5]

    Abbruzzese about "Glorified G":

I told our manager that I just bought a coupla guns and he told Jeff, and at rehearsal Jeff kinda blurted it out. And Eddie went, 'Whaaaat, you bought a GUN?' And I said, 'In fact, I bought two,' which ended up as the opening line of the song. I think it's fair to say Eddie was pretty outraged.[5]

or, "got a gun, in fact I've got two"
  • Hold on, hold on...maybe this is open for interpretation. We all know the song is about Dave A's affinity for guns, but let's consider for a second that the song was in response to this situation by saying Dave A is a "glorified gangster" as a tongue-in-cheek type thing. It's easy to say it's Gun and normally I would agree with all the posts here, but I just want to play devil's advocate.

What exactly is the reason that Dave A and PJ parted ways? Anything to do with the guns thing?

I always heard he went against the establishment, or PJ's credo in that he bought a mercedez and a gun, etc.

Oh ok, I always thought it was because Jack came to them asking for a job and they felt opligated to take him because he was the first person that they offered the job back in 1990 and because he was the one who told them about...........ahh whats that guys name........EDDIE VEDDER!!!!!!! And I just thought they felt bad not taking him. I'm a drummer and Dave has always been my favorite and I always thought that was the reason but then when I was reading some of the threads about who would replace matt if he went back to SG and I noticed some people saying "they would never take dave back!" and I couldn't figure out why, thanks for the clarification. :D

pay a closer look to the last part of that quote..."to protect themselves against tyranny in government"

the whole purpose of the 2nd amendment was if in fact America "failed" and became yet another tyranny, the people had a right to revolt...with arms

at that time in history, all the men owned guns because they used them in the revolutionary war and there was no organized American army, just a bunch of men banding together to fight off the British and become an independent country...the point of the amendment was to say that if for some reason America became something like 18th century England, then the people could use the arms that they own and fight off the unfair and unjust government but last time i checked, we still elect our representatives so hold your fire everyone.

Plenty of what EV/PJ writes is open for interpretation. This one however is pretty much set in stone.

    Here is why.

"Glorified version of a pellet gun" = Real Gun

The song title is Glorified Gun, shortened to Glorified G. It is about a man who owns a gun, in fact two, and EV is mocking that person for it.

Now as for the Devil's Advocate thing, if that DJ, or anyone else wants to consider it Gangster, then so be it, that is your right and no one in the band would care. I think they would think it is great that someone takes whatever meaning they want from it.

Just part of the beauty of artistic expression and interpretation.

    Go nuts. ;)

well if you studied politics like me and you really knew what was going on in DC then you'd know the need for the second amedment is just as important now perhaps than it ever was!....treason,cronyism & corruption is at an all time high....corporations have their own private armies!world bankers are imploding economies to bring about one world government & one world economy which = world dictatorship....people who think that is a conspiracy have their heads up their asses and are blinded by the shit in their eyes!....Obama's rating is going down...congress's rating is at an all time low....people are fed the fuck up with being fucked over and sold out (see bail out)...when enough people wake up as things get worse & worse they will see it's time to take this country back and return it to the laws of the constitution...THAT is what the second amendment is about!!!!!!!! it wasn't just to secure freedom in the 1700's..it's about PRESERVING FREEDOM ALWAYS!!!

....and if you think for one minute that elections are not rigged and totally controlled....i got news for you....not that it matters because the candidates are groomed, bought and paid for anyway....our political system is a fucking joke now, and the only thing sadder is that too many people in this country have become too apathetic & stupid to even see it.

Tyranny: We are already there, brother. The American military is now allowed to police her own citizens. All of our internet use and phone calls are recorded and kept without warrants. In some states, roadblocks are set up where blood is drawn from individuals not accused of any crime. Their DNA is databased. The DNA of all newborns born in hospitals since 1972 has been taken without permission. Some states require bio scan information, like thumbprinting, in exchange for permission to drive a car. The 'Level 6 Pandemic' that the government declared over swine flu gave them the legal authority to forcibly inject all of us with vaccines. Most airports will soon give passengers the choice of submitting to a naked body scan, or not flying. The 'State Of Emergency' that the U.S. has been in since September 2001 gives the president the right to suspend the constitution and declare martial law for any reason.

Many of the officials in positions of high power are not elected. They are appointed. (The FDA, the FTC, the CIA- those "alphabet soup" agencies.)

  • Glorified G is one of my favorite PJ songs, but Ed sure was a bitter asshole back in the early days of PJ....writing a song that openly mocks a member of the band is pretty brutal. It's no wonder things didnt work out with Dave.

ha it seems threads that i start always turn into some kind of argument.
well not an argument...but a spirited disagreement.

That's what I remember from wikipedia too, he was upset about not touring and according to Stone he was "more comfortable being a rock star" than the rest of the band.

I have to admit, I love the drums on Vs. and there's a certain force that I felt was missing on later albums. I think Matt is the perfect fit and the best drummer for Pearl Jam. I realized I liked the production more than Dave's playing. That particular album, they sound so... aggressive- which I suppose relates back to the other topics of this thread.

As to the other thing, I think we would all be better off with less violence. Let's COMMUNICATE and figure it out. I agree, we could use a little more freedom and no one likes restrictions. BUT The government is not out to get you, and taking the law into your own hands won't accomplish anything but more bloodshed. That's not to say I am against guns, just that some of these arguments sound a little paranoid.
