  • I think Crazy Mary is the finest example of Pearl Jam or Ed making a cover their own. But of course, he's best when performing his own material.
Using the word "methinks" in your message board posts doesn't make you look smart.

    so....the question is...

...is he better interpreting his own words, or the words of others?

    can't disagree with this, but...
do we listen for rarities just b/c ed sings them?

I can't agree with Crown of thorns. He does well and and it's a decent version but it's not as good as the MLB original.

Generally speaking though the band and Ed do amazing covers. Crazy Mary is definitely the finest example of he band making a cover their own.
  • Every cover he does or PJ is better then original.

    End of discussion :)
CAN'T KEEP CRAZY MARY IN MY TREE NO WAY NOT FOR YOU. ALL THOSE YESTERDAY JEREMY is ALONE, SAD with RATS & BUGS it's HARD TO IMAGINE a JEREMY a BETTER MAN.

Can't agree with Rocking in the free world. That song is just Neil Young all the way!

Beisdes, I have seen bands cover this song way better than pj, especially later performances has been a bit dull.

I think this thread is kind of silly. :)

    Rockin in the Free World?
    Baba?
    HIDE YOUR LOVE AWAY?

I think the younger you are the more unfamiliar you are with the originals and the more you think of them as Ed's....or Pearl Jam's. These songs are not unknown songs that PJ picked up...like Crazy Mary.

    Whatever. :)

When I hear the original Baba or Reign I like to joke "What's with this Pearl Jam cover band??" But it is said VERY tongue in cheek. ;)
  • Last Kiss and Patriot are 2 others he has clearly made his own as well.

Even though Im not a huge fan of Last Kiss its entirely different than the original and did well on the charts.

  • I just had to say--if anyone has made "Crown of Thorns" his own, it would be Shawn Smith. If you've seen him do this song live, you'll know what I mean.

No fucking way, Baba O'Reilly is better when PJ does it, sorry.

    Keith Moon > Matt Cameron
    Pete Townsend > McCready

Sorry, you can't say that. You just can't.

I agree with most of your list ....except for Crown of Thorns still prefer the MLB version and Andrews vocals seem to fit the song better.

I agree with you. MLB totally owns the song. In second place, pretty close behind would be Shawn. Quite a bit behind in 3rd place is Ed.

About covers, I think GTFLYGIRL is on the money. Especially for the younger or musically less diverse crowd, PJ is the first time many of the covers were heard, so that is the version they relate to.

But for us oldsters, PJs attempts are charming, and I love hearing them. But there are almost none that rate "better" than the original.

that is by far the most pitifull worshipping of the man I've ever heard.

No, he doesn't cover all songs better than the original.

Some of you need to branch out, Ed is not a God

it's not even close - not one Who cover, not a Neil cover, not a Stones cover, none of them

open your ears and expand your music knowledge a little bit

I'm not saying he doesn't do a good job, but better, NO WAY

    it's almost a comical statement

  • I'll take Neil playing RITFW any day over PJ.

Also, the Dead Boys version of Sonic Reducer can't be touched.

  • ritfw and baba are definitley better as originals

But in my opinion the rest sound better to me than the originals
