Have fun DC and remember to post your review! I cant recall, is this your first time seeing them??

It is. They're opening for Jonny Lang. It's not often I go for an opener, but this is one of the shows that fits that bill. I'm hoping the set won't be too short, but any JJ and Mofro is fine by me. 8-)

Seeing Vetiver open for Fruit Bats in Sept. That is another one that I bought tickets for to see the opening band.
Yea, kinda sucks you wont get a full set, but they will not disappoint. Have fun! I'm jonesin for another Mofro show myself. Seen them probably 7 or 8 times now, more than any other band in fact. But they're from around these parts so I've been following them since the early days.

Seeing them down in the south would be my preferred experience. Nothing like a band in their home environment. I saw the Black Crowes for my first Crowes show in Atlanta and it was very memorable.

I agree. I still want to see them at the Freebird in Jacksonville. To me, that's their home.

Isn't your show this Sunday in SLC?

I was tired/drunk last night... so here is a more lengthy post:

We got there before the gates opened... stood int the hot ass sun just waiting to get in. Once I did, it was on... cracked my beer, laid out the blanket, went over to the merch stand and bought a coozie for the sister-in-law (who lives in Alabama and loves JJ as well) and got us a "I <3 Hocakes" sticker. JJ's merch guy is one uninviting kid. One of those types that makes it seem like your inconveniencing him. Shit, I'd trade the guy jobs instantly if he's so unhappy.

Anyway, JJ's set was fantastic. Not in order, but here are some of the songs:

Slow, Hot & Sweaty (JJ introduced the song comically by talking all smooth like about gettin' down with your lady)
    Orange Blossoms
    Everything Good Is Bad

^ those two being the highlight for me as I think Orange Blossoms is a great album.
    Lochloosa
    Georgia Warhorse
    The Sweetest Thing
Oh, Palastine (I'm pretty sure they played this)

That's the most I can recall. JJ did a lot of talking and interacting which I loved. He's got so much charisma and is a really kind and gentle southern boy. He speaks with the utmost respect for his audience. Him and his band are truly underappreciated.

Some guy at the merch stand came up to me and said "which one should I buy? What are your favorites?" and pointed to JJ's CD's... I simply responded "Probably not the best answer for you, but I'd say all of them. You can't go wrong with any of them. But if I had to choose two, I'd choose Orange Blossoms and Blackwater."

I enjoyed Jonny Lang, but thought that he didn't make much of an effort to get involved with the audience. Skilled musician though, there is no arguing that... but I'd take JJ Grey & Mofro over Jonny Lang anyday. No disrespect to Jonny.

in an email a month or so back, they said they will be doing it a little different this year by doing a NYE run in three cities:

    12/29/11 Jacksonville, FL
    12/30/11 Tampa, FL
    12/31/11 Atlanta, GA

Kind of surprised that Jax is not the one on NYE though

Sweet! Mine arrived today - unsigned though. Oh well. One of these days!

I plan on listening to the CD tonight, but my cousin is coming into town this weekend and asked me to save it for him to watch as well - he's a big JJ Grey fan, too. No big deal - probably will end up watching it Friday night before we head to the Meat Puppets show.
