When the album first came out Amongst the Waves hit me hard but over time Unthought Known has really grabbed me. It didn't drown out Amongst the Wave, but it did take the top spot.
this is a tought one and the answer probably changes based on my mood. Both songs are so great, especially live. The winner, right now - in this moment is :

Unthought Known is ahead by a slim margin, but ATW curls my toes too. Love the line 'better loud than too late.' But there is something about Unthought that's just amazing. The music, love the piano, the lyrics, among Ed's best, that makes it my fav on the record. But there is always room for more, like Waves, Friend, SS, Force, and Speed of sound. Just a phenominal record, I can't wait to see what they saved for the ep.
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
I hope the EP isn't a bunch of bullshit. I don't believe it yet. Its nothing they've done before and a band like Pearl Jam with extra material... I'd believe there'd be a lot of pressure to save it for a full album... for $$$ reasons.
I hope they do drop an 7-8 song Ep. I mean... BS was only 11 songs. Not that much difference.
Unthought Known is almost as good as GTF...it's that good!

Amongst the Waves every time. This may be controversial here but I don't get the big fuss over Unthought Known. It's a good song, but it isn't nearly the best song on the album in my opinion. And just to sound like an arse I really think the place of these songs back to back is poor. They both have similar intros and pace. Having said that, I love Amongst the Waves, one of my favourites ever, and I really do like Unthought Known a lot. Just not as much as some people on here seem to

unthought known, to me, is one of the weaker tracks on the record. funny because i loved it at first, now im kinda lukewarm.
i think johnny guitar might be the best song on backspacer. that or got some
Really?? Got Some I agree with. It's probably the strongest song on the album, UK is easily the 2nd strongest song lyrically and musically. Hated it at first because of the repetitive chorus but after about 5 listens it was easily my favorite on the album. That being said I LOVE Amongst the Waves, but it just doesn't come close to the same "feeling" as UK.

All those yesterdays
All those yesterdays
All those paper plates
Ten-4!! Both songs are amazing. The whole run from Just Breathe to Supersonic is a tremendous quadra-fecta of songs.
I have to give Amongst the Waves the edge. I love Mike's little solo in it......
Ain't it funny when things change so much, it's all state of mind?
(Im in a Force of Nature mood these days- keep playing it!)

Unthought Known
Lyrics are much deeper.
I hit the ceiling every time EV belts out, "There's nothing here, nothing left..."
But like a previous poster stated Force of Nature is my song of the moment right now, along with Speed of Sound.
ATW, UK, Supersonic, SoS, FoN a great run of songs here.
My sentiments exactly...

Amongst the Waves for me.
Sammi: Wanna just break up?
The lyrics in both songs are great, but Amonst the Waves hits it home for me.

It may be the first single line in a pearl jam song that takes a great song down an entire notch.
Therefore, I pick Amongst the Waves, which is one of my favorite pearl jam tracks of the past decade.
