  • I think I've started this conversation with someone else on here, but why is there a need for some humans to feel like they have to apologize for being the ones that have opposable thumbs and cognitive thought abilities?

What's mind boggling is that a chimp can recognize a few colors and learn a handful of words using sign language and he's the smartest motherfucker that ever lived. Really? My 2 year old can operate a fucking iPhone like he worked for Apple.

I like animals. I do realize that many of them can kill me in a second. But, I can take a shit in a toilet and whipe my ass clean. A lion can't do that. It makes me superior. I don't apologize for being human. Hopefully some of you will be reincarnated into a German Shepard and I can whipe your nose in shit when you drop a log in my living room. I understand that some people love animals. But seriously, there's no need to try to lay guilt on the human race for being born in a hospital instead of being dropped from a giraffe in the middle of a field in Africa. There is zero need to question why you were born a human. I like most animals. They're cute and they offer some points of fascination. I'm just not going to feel bad for not being one.

and, you are holding that chimp/lion/dog to the human level of intelligence and way of life, which is not the only kind of intelligence/way of life out there. in many ways, our intellect is narrow, b/c it is only focused on us, and our own egos and apparent need to discuss our superiority any chance available. it has nothing to do with loving animals, or wishing one wasn't born human....happy to be a person, thank you....it is simply acknowledging that we are not the end-all be all, and showing respect and appreciation for other species, and other intelligences. it's not all about anthropomorphizing animals.

  • Ahh yes....D2D, I should have known. Well, just because there are other forms of intellect doesn't mean we're not the end all be all of creation either. We'll just agree to disagree. Animals are cute...and delicious.

doesn't mean we are, either. ;)
i'd put me $$$ on not, but yes....agree to disagree.
the fact that this big ole globe would keep on spinnin', even thriving, without us here...for me...means...we are not the end-all, be-all. we're just another species in the interconnected world of life.
tho i do agree, many animals are cute, many are delicious....and all deserve some respect.

  • The sun doesn't get enough credit for being the only reason life exists here. Earth doesn't need living creatures to exist as a thriving planet but it needs the sun.

I'm gonna go ahead and say that humans are the height of what creation has to offer. We also have the technology to end the earth...not that we would. One thing's for sure. The sun will burn out billions of years from now and that will be that. One big ice ball floating around. Without the sun's gravity keeping it in orbit, who knows where this place will wind up?

Okay, back to dick and ball jokes. This shit is too heady for an ole boy from Tennessee.

Yeah, I don't apologize for being born a human. Hell, as far as humans go, I'm a pretty decent one. Still, if Waffle (my deity) put a red button in front of me and said pushing it will simply erase all mankind and all of his works, I would push that button in a heartbeat. That means I erase not only my wife, but myself as well. I'm ok with that. Why? Because humans are bad for this planet and there are significantly more of them every day. There is also significantly less room and resources to sustain them... every day. Exponential population growth is not going to stop. I think we can all agree there is not an infinite supply of resources to sustain that (geologically speaking) for much longer. If you think of the devastation man has wrought upon the lifeforce that actually sustains him for even just the last 300 hundred years (blink of an eye!) combined with the aforementioned exponential populaton growth, I come to one conclusion. Our species doesn't jive with long-term success on this world. That would be fine with me if we were just killing ourselves, but we're not, we are taking everything with us. Everything, most importantly the futures of our own children. I won't have children because I refuse to bring them into a world where the quality of life is so comprimised from what even I experienced such a short time ago.

So yeah, how smart are we?

My whole artistic philosophy is built around this subject. I can talk about it for days...

i never suggested ANY creature on earth deserves 'credit'...that's the whole point. and, perhaps you are right....tho i personally don't view the world, or life, thru the same lens as you. then again, i am not really one for breaking out dicks and measuring sticks either. ;) life is interconnected, even some of the smallest, seemingly insignificant creatures that are on this earth are pretty damn impressive and important, in the sceme of things, for life. what one uses as their 'measuring stick' for the height of what creation has to offer (and why one really feels a need to do that? idk) will vary wildly, besides which...we humans are the only species who waste our time with such thoughts, so i'd think our opinions rather skewed. ;)

  • Okay, I agree with all of you. Humans can't control themselves sexually and instead of making the personal decision to limit yourself to X amount of procreating for the purpose of preserving resources, we should be wiped off the earth by an asteroid before our population gets out of control.

We are all worthless cocksuckers. Humans don't offer anything positive to this planet. We're filthy and to be honest, we're viruses like we are taught in the classic film The Matrix. We do have a problem with creating lives that are built to do nothing but destroy the globe from the inside out.

Thank you for helping me see the light. Humans are arrogant walking piles of shit. I feel better admitting that to myself. I'll still eat animals but I won't make any more children.

Idea : All males should have FREE vasectomies (vasectomys?) by age 30???

    Anyway, people suck.

C'mon Donkey, no need for that. People could be beautiful, and often times are, inside and out. I like you despite your pro human ;) ways. We are just very short-sighted and eventually we will pay for that trait. It's not like I'm happy we suck so bad... it breaks my heart.

btw - there are plenty of examples of humans NOT doing those things, at all. unfortunately, quite the opposite sometimes.

and so with animals... bull seals don't know their own fathers. Pigs will let their weakest runts die...

human beings are the most intelligent species on this earth, people need to stop pretending otherwise... of course there are 6 billion of us so there are bound to be some complete morons

as for the animal parents vs. human parents....i would suggest with animals it is purposeful and inherent to their species, whereas we humans don't all follow the same patterns. most animals would leave their ill offspring to die, whereas some humans would, some wouldn't. an animal would never purposely leave a healthy offspring to die, would fight to protect it...whereas human beings often do such things. we can go back and forth with examples, it doesn't much matter. point is, it's not just about who's most intelligent or who is 'superior'.......only we seem to care about that.

    who pretended otherwise?
    :?

just b/c we may be THE most intelligent, doesn't make the other intelligences of less importance. i think that is what many of us were discussing. being the most intelligent, in the grand scheme of things, is not the end-all, be-all...doesn't make us more "important" or more valuable to life on earth, etc.

we're quite far afield of the initial thread topic in any case. and for that, i still stand by my answer. yes, indeed, most animals are WELL aware of life and death, the cyle of life. i can't imagine why anyone would think otherwise.

  • Let's just get this clear. Humans are clearly the smartest species of all creation. That's just not even debatable. To argue otherwise is just stupid. Yes, I'm aware that whales have sonar senses. Dolphins communicate underwater with high pitched squeals. Walruses have tremendous dicks. Humans split the atom. Game over.

Animals do operate on a more efficient level than humans. It's true that we suck up the resources around us (that we need and don't need). Animals have more of an acceptable natural behavior. When they murder, it's for survival. When we do it, it's for hate primarily. I don't know what to think. We all have our good and bad. Imagine giving birth to a baby only to have your neighbor come and eat it, but hey, he's trying to survive so it's okay. They probably don't have the personal attachment we have to our young. I just know that if someone harmed one of my children, I would do some things I wouldn't do otherwise and in the eyes of the law, I'd still be punished for taking matters in my hands (but it would be understood why I did it).

True : The earth would be okay without us...but, there wouldn't be internet porn and that's no kind of life. I vote for humans and masturbation.

    Thanks.

It's well documented that Elephants mourn their dead. So I'm sure they understand the concept of death. As for all the other animals on the planet who knows.

Well, there ya go...the highlighted text pretty much says it all.

Humans split the atom...game over. Yup..BOOM..game over. Sooner or later.

That makes us smart? Intelligent yes, smart? Not so much. In my book there is a difference.

ANYWAY weren't we talking about whether or not animals other than humans know that they will die?

Seems all humans, at least the ones here..including me...suffer from ADD...since none of us can stick to the gist of a conversation to save our own lives.

    Just sayin'...

Anyway...yes..my humble opinion, as previously stated... is that they do realize they will die. Yes.

  • i think if anyone has read Ishmael, it could be argued, in fact one of the main cruxes of the book is that humans think everything started with them, ie, you ask a human being "when did life begin"-this human will tell you this elaborate story, and it will end at the time when humans are born, or when humans as a species started to exist. Thus inherent is this idea that humans are smarter, wiser, more advanced than anything or anyone.

However, one can make a very coherent case that the natives 10,000 years ago were much more advanced than we are in 2010, and by god, they didnt have...gasp...tvs, cell phones, computers, the internet, and on and on.

And animals are often thought of, as being dumb, stupid, or not as intelligent as humans. Again, I cited an example of animal intelligence that dwarfs human intelligence, and that is the sense that animals have, in that they can tell ahead of time, that a hurricane, earthquake or tsunami is coming, and can escape, humans cant do this.

I am not a scientist and I dont pretend to know what goes on in humans brains, much less animals brains
  • Holy shit. You're right. I never answered the thread question.

    No. They don't know.

    I thought I posted this, but can't find it...so...
Humans seem to be in great denial about their own mortality. We like to fool ourselves into thinking we won't die! We spend our young years in training for our future, then we spend many years working and raising a family, still planning our future, but then we are in that future. What now? That is the time when we really realize we do die. We no longer plan out our future, we are in it. All we can do is hope that it is as comfortable as it can be.

I am now at a point in my life where I realize I really need to think about my own mortality. Both my parents have dementia/alzheimers. One has the classic case of alzheimers, but my mom is just crazy! She is regressing quickly. Just 2 weeks ago she seemed to be like a 6 year old, now she is like a 3 to 4 year old. She spilt some coffee and was scrared that her caretaker would be mad and wanted me to do something. It was just a teaspoon full and she did not know how to wipe it up. She didn't even know how to try. She has had periods of time that she did not she had a name, nor that people had names at all. At those times, she is like 2 years old or less.
Now, do I really want to live long enough to be like them? HELL NO!! So, here is my dilemna, people, doctors, etc. all say we need to do this and that to keep healthy. I question why? My dad is very healthy and it his enemy! It seems it is my mom's also. They did do the things to live a long life, but that is forcing them to live as they do!
I do not want to live a long life, only to be stuck like that. I do not want to be waiting to die and death won't come, all because I kept myself healthy.
Their illnesses are genetic to boot! Longevity runs in both families also. Yep, I have a lot to look forward to. So, I am out of my denial about my mortality. I know I will die. But I have decided I will die on my time. I will not do the things I could do in order to give me a few more years. Why? I don't want THOSE years. I want the ones I am living now. I am not living today thinking about my future. I am living as if I am in my future. I am doing things as if I am in my future. I do not want my future.
Yep, I am going to die. I will not try to extend my time. To me, to try and extend the time, is trying to beat death. WE cannot beat death. It will catch us sooner or later. Any time I may earn extra is not worth ruining today. I see my future in my parents eyes. They say to me, go live and don't worry about whether I can gain a year here or there by how I live my life, just go and live it. The extra time isn't that valuable and can be an enemy. Death can be a blessing.
I have told my loved ones that when I die, do not be sad, that I have had a full and satisfying life. I am now in my future and just living out my days, one at a time. I know I don't want too many of them.
    Save room for dessert!

And animals are often thought of, as being dumb, stupid, or not as intelligent as humans. ... There is a reason for this. They are often though of as not being as intelligent as us because they quite simply aren't.

and thats only one thing... and its a sense, probably due to some change in atmospheric pressure or something. But we have, for all our stupidity, invented a machine which can almost predict earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, etc... so whilst we have lost or never had that one 'intelligent' instinct we overcame it using our vastly superior intellect.

so a sheep knows when its going to get windy... is that such a big deal? It still runs away when a farmer makes a big clappy sound.. thousands of years of farmers making them move into pens via the use of whistling and a dog... have the stupid fuckers never worked out that the dog won't touch them?
