I signed up for Columbia House CD's way back in High School. Stopped when I got to University (it was Unofficial Bootleg heaven trading then). The CD of the month was Pearl Jam's No Code. I had already bought No Code on CD/Cassette & Vinyl @ Sam The Record Man the day of release. With Columbia House, if you didn't complete the card each month & send it back (by mail) that you didn't want to receive the month's special, you would get that CD in the mail & charged (if I remembered now). Well I did get Columbia House No Code CD. Both had different Polaroids (sweet) but the color of the CD's were different. Sam's CD was light blue, while Columbia House's color was light purple.

Does anybody know if the other Pearl Jam records released by Columbia House came in different colours other then the in store release?

Thanks! :)

I know the CH/BMG CD clubs typically had different UPCs and other minor differences as well. You could usually find a "Mfgd for BMG under license" type note on the art somewhere.

I don't see a MFGD for Columbia House on the back of of the album. But CD say's it's Made at SMC. The store bought No Code doesn't.
  • I'm pretty sure alot of there CDs are like that my nirvana "in utero" is pink and if you got from stores it's orange!

ah thats cool D, i think the no code release may be the only BMG/columbia house release that was identical to the us general; release

The bazilian no code is actually kind of strange also - a quite dark blue really.

so was columbia house different to the BMG direct scheme? like a canadian version D and in that case are there columbian house specials like the BMG ones with their own barcodes etc?

    I fucking hope not

Jose said his BMG No Code CD color print is the same as mine Columbia House copy. Not sure about the bar codes. Guess you'll be hunting down for each album from each countries BMG & Columbia House releases now.
  • One thing to remember, back in 1996 the only record club selling Pearl Jam CDs was Columbia House. For the longest time, all Columbia Records, Epic Records, and related label releases were not available through BMG Music Service.

Around the time (late-90s) Columbia House began to discontinue its music club, BMG Music Service started carrying most of the Columbia Records, Epic Records, etc. catalog (including Pearl Jam). There may have been a merger between the two record clubs. Then BMG Music Service CD issues began using simply the "Mfd. for BMG Direct" moniker with a special bar code which replaced the previous use of "Mfd. for BMG Direct Marketing, Inc. under License" with no bar code.

Yep, but it was only a few years ago when Sony and BMG merged in 2005 or 2006. Columbia House became strictly dvd's at that time, while cd sales continued through BMG Direct. BMG Direct began selling Sony products once this happend (i.e. Pearl Jam on Epic) Then in 2008, BMG Direct shut its doors in favor of Sony BMG's new business model, Yourmusic.com. Yourmusic discs do feature the "Mfd. for BMG Direct" tag.

Although the merger may have occurred in 2005 or 2006, BMG Music Service was selling CDs from the Sony family of record labels a few years before that. I remember purchasing 3 Pearl Jam CDs from BMG Music Service (Yield, Live On Two Legs, and Binaural) in late-2000 or early-2001.
