Got Some is very good, even the odd timed rim-shots. Matt on many of his songs has cool parts, but it may not be a part that goes thru the whole song, but it's cool none the less. I'd throw Grievance into this mix too, as well as even Sleight Of Hand - It's subtle, but a cool groove to play.

I think Matt's a true professional. With that being said you really can't give him the credit for The Real Me"....
he played it adequately but that's all Moon the Loon.....

I’m an amateur Air Band Drummer/concert goer and I’ve always wondered where Carter from DMB ranks on the drums. He who has the biggest set should win this competition and his is HUGE!

I honestly don’t know dick about drumming, I just wondered how good Carter is considered cause that’s the biggest damn drum kit I’ve ever seen.

Portnoy is a just a freakin show off. Even watching him play just screams "douche bag" to me. Carter is classy and has groove.

I think 'In the Moonlight' is cool ass drumming. Can't believe that song never made it on the album. Thank goodness for Lost Dogs! If you want to hear some other good Matt drumming, check out Wellwater Conspiracy! Cool stuff there and Matt does it all singing lead vocals!!!

Wasnt saying that neil or portnoy were better.. was saying they have bigger kits. Still think Portnoy is great, has a lush sounding kit too!

your statement doesn't match up with the drummers you ranked. Im guessing you mean for the arrows to be switched?

But honestly on a technical level:
    Carter>mike>Matt>Dave
but I'd still rank Matt #1 and mike wayyyyyyy below on the bottom.

Gods Dice is tasty all over the place.

Sleight of Hand has some great subtle drumming

and gtf and in my tree before the 09 tour?? Gross!
  • I agree^^. Slight of hand has great drumming, aswell as Evacuation. Both have weird timing.
In terms of SG, I'd say Gun, Searching With My Good Eye Closed and Nazi Driver.

I don't know, there's some live Even Flow solos that would put both of those to shame.

Jesus Christ Pose > Even Flow

You ever listen to Cornells pipes on that song?

I was always awed by his vocals on this song, but when I listened to the acapella studio recording I was just blown away. I can imagine him standing in the recording booth and just tearing through the walls there. I think the studio must have been shaking:

Matt ahead of of mike? How? Does Technicallity not define a good drummer? His ability to play odd time signatures are astonishing. Not one song he plays sounds exactly the same. His ability to match a beat to a song are second to none.

Sleight of Hand is okay, but honestly does it compare to this?

I mean if you are going based off of personal favorite's then yeah, put Matt their, but if it's based off of skill, Mikes in a totally different league.

And Matt better than Dave A?

Listen to the rage that Dave A played Even flow with, then listen to Matt play it. The difference is amazing. Listening to Matt play it after hearing a Dave A version is like pulling teeth.

Here's an overhead version of Dave A on porch.

Thats why I put on a technical level Mike better than Matt. But my preference puts Matt way ahead considering I just flat out hate mike portnoy.

Theres no convincing me with the whole dave a matt argument. I like the way matt plays better and he is a better drummer than Dave is.

I think that Dave's approach to much of the earlier catalog, including Porch, EF, SOLAT and a number of other songs ads a gigantic dynamic which is no longer there. Dave would play very tight and groovy, then loosen it up, then tighten it back up, then loosen it. It gave the song a great flow, and again dynamics.

Many of the earlier songs no longer have the feel that made me love them to begin with.
