  • My favourite British band are The Wildhearts. Although they're on hiatus at the moment frontman Ginger is still busy and is a fantastic songwriter.

Look up the lyrics of the song "29 x The Pain" for an indication of his influences.

Any of his solo stuff or side-projects are worth a listen too in particular the wonderful "Black Leather Mojo" by
    Silver Ginger 5.

As mentioned in an earlier list The Music are, in my opinion one of the best uk bands of recent times.

They have recently split up but have 3 great albums, the first being the standout and are incredible live. i was fortunate enough to catch their farewell shows and they were brilliant.

They have some great b-sides too and there' a great youtube page dedicated to all of these........check em out

OK, first off U2 are Irish and, Yefa, Midlake are from the US I think (not sure where but they're not British).
I don't want to go into the separate identities of the various nations that comprise Britain, that's a whole other thread, let's just say that each country has it's share of nationalists (pro independence) and unionists (loyal to the union, i.e Britain) I'm from the west coast of Scotland (outside of Northern Ireland, one of the most divided regions on this subject in Britain) now living in the Republic of Ireland (most definitely NOT part of Britain) so feel pretty well qualified to talk about this. I can understand the confusion caused by a lot of this outside the UK though, it's very complicated!!
Anyway, back to what matters, the music. I can't believe no-one has mentioned Elbow in this thread yet, in my opinion, the best band to emerge from the UK in many a year. If you like them you should also check out I Am Kloot, another wonderful band, also (I'm assuming most people are familiar with, Beatles, Stones, Zep, Floyd, Clash, Sabbath, Kinks, Small Faces, Faces etc)....

    The Burns Unit
    James Yorkston
    Roy Harper
    John Martyn
    Alabama 3
    PJ Harvey
    Richard Hawley
    Robert Wyatt
    The Smiths
    Syd Arthur
    The Specials
    Four Tet
    Amy Winehouse
    Bert Jansch
    John Renbourn
    The Blue Nile
    Caravan
    Orange Juice
    Aztec Camera
    Elvis Costello
    Gallows
    Hatfield and the North
    Japan
    The Jam/ Paul Weller
    Karine Polwart
    Robyn Hitchcock
    Wire
....and many, many more, this was done off the top of my head, if you want any more let me consult my Ipod!!

That was wicked! I've only really gotten into his stuff recently, I've heard his name thrown around for quite some time but never got round to listening to it.

Don't think anyone's mentioned Ocean Colour Scene,...Moseley Shoals is a brilliant album.
Skunk Anansie have rolled out some top draw rock records too,....not to mention how good they are live.

One of my favourite new bands coming from the UK is a duo called The Union (http://www.theuniononline.com/site/), featuring Luke Morley of Thunder & the rather unknown Pete Shoulder, who has a mean voice. They're releasing their second album next week, which can be heard on their homepage (don't ask me if it's any good though, I haven't heard it. Prefer to wait 'til I got the cd in hand).

    A couple of videos:

Thanks frazba for the correction on Midlake. I have removed them from my post and added some other artists that are actually from the UK.

  • Anyone else remember the Longpigs? The Sun Is Often Out is a great record:

  • I was a big fan of Terrorvision (from Bradford, England) up to their album Regular Urban Survivors in 1996. After that, it all become a bit of a joke as they aimed straight for the pop charts (with some success).

    1994: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOOcJobuZTc

  • I saw Terrorvison loads of times back in the day, brilliant band to watch in the sun at a festival :D

I also loved Terrorvision ... and have seen them a couple of times in the last few years.

Tony still thinks he's twenty and dances all over the place with the crowd bouncing along.

This is from a show I saw in 08

So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?
  • Yeah I saw Terrovision in a little tent at the Brighton Essential Music Festival 1997, that was great! I saw them earlier this year in a pub in Southampton... not so great to be honest. But Tony definitely still puts on a show  They're playing in Brighton in a couple of weeks, I might pop along.

I love the Wildhearts!!! Fishing for Luckies and Endless, Nameless are 2 albums that I listened to death when they first came out!

I'm also a big fan of the Manic Street Preachers...I know a lot of people don't really like them, but The Holy Bible is one of the best albums ever packed with awesome guitar riffs and bleak lyrics! The album they did a couple of years ago 'Journal for Plague Lovers' is also awesome

Also I really like Twin Atlantic at the moment too!
