As an anglophile I am always looking for good bands that call the UK home. I am into the basics, the Radioheads, Oasis', Snow Patrols and Keane, and U2's of the world.

What are some good bands from the Uk?

My other favourite UK band at the Moment is Back Door Slam (now 'Davy Knowles and Back Door Slam') from the Isle of Man.

It is time to admit that we used to rock like hurricanes. It is time to run for the hills and go round and round. It is time for us to shout at the devil. We've got the right to choose it, there ain't no way we'll lose it, and we're not gonna take it anymore.

Ummm just because a nation is PART of Britain or the UK, doesn't mean that they self-identify as British. I'm curious how many Scots call themselves BRITISH. I have this argument with some kid I teach who is a bit of a Brit nationalist.

I fully agree with this, i get fairly annoyed when i hear Ireland being described as part of the "British Isles"....but for simplicity's sake we'll assume the OP was referring to England, Scotland, Wales, and all of Ireland. No point de-railing the thread over something that will divide opinions.

Then why not just refer to the lists as English and Non-English?

Its not a nerdy thing. The Edge was born in the UK, but they are in no way a UK band. They all grew up in Dublin, and all still live in Dublin. Irish as it gets.

    UK music suggestions:

Radiohead (im sure its been said already)
    Florence & The Machine
    Kate Bush
    Jimmy Eastwood
    Massive Attack
    Groove Armada
    Basement Jaxx
    DJ Yoda
    The Cribs

Dizzee Rascal (this is a genuine suggestion, i love his stuff. "Grime" is the name of the genre apparently, either way if anyone likes rap, they should check it out)

I realise most of these suggestions probably wont go well for Pearl Jam fans, but these are great musicians. The UK rock scene unfortunately seems pretty stale, the exciting stuff is their pop, grime & electronica stuff. The rock bands are either irritating 80's revival bands (Glasvegas, The XX, The Horrors) or irritating choppy guitar bands (Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, The Automatic etc) for the most part. Which is a shame.

No more Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Pink floyd, the Who, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Oasis, Blur.....

There are some great UK rock bands - its just they aren't known to the 'mainstream' audience. If you look under the top layer of the UK music 'scene' they're definitely there!!

Off the top of my head there's:

    Amplifier
    Orange Goblin
    ASIWYFA
    Porcupine Tree
    Taint (alas recently split)
    Oceansize (alas recently split)
    Vessels
    Manatees

Frank Turner and he's touring the USA/Canada at the moment.

I shall avoid the British/non British thing, I could of course throw in Cornish nationalism just to really add to the debate.

british schmitish...england, ireland/s, scotland, wales.. do what we do here in oz.. if theyre from new zealand and theyre good we claim them de facto as our own. i dont even care where music comes from anymore... i just assume it all comes from brooklyn... unless of course jack white is involved.. then it comes from outer space.. and if josh homme is somehow involved.. it comes from the desert. im a big fan of arctic monkeys.. alex turner is a master of the word. im a huge fan of radiohead. a boy introduced introduced me to led zeppelin back in the day. another boy(a pearl jam fan nonetheless) introduced me to therapy?.. and yet another is opening my mind to the brilliance of pink floyd. love the kaiser chiefs, the kooks, frightened rabbit and hold the manics in such high esteem it is beyond mentioning. im stilll figuring out kasabian.....
