I thought that The Hangover was awesome.

Tough one. I've seen a lot of movies this year. Had to wiki the releases to remember all I've seen.

Up and Moon are definitely amongst the best. It's always refreshing to see a truly intelligent sci-fi movie with a heart. Moon had all this in spades. Star Trek gets blockbuster of the year for me. Looked great, and they somehow successfully replaced the original crew. As of Yesterday Avatar enters my top 5 of the year too. Stunning film. I very much enjoyed Watchmen, but it was deeply flawed. I can only imagine how incomprehensible it was to those who haven't read the book. For dumb, badly scripted fun GI Joe is the winner.
District 9 of course was another great sci-fi film this year. I hope to see more great things from Neil Blomkamp in the future.
The Hangover was a surprisingly good comedy and I think will have to be placed in my top 10
Adventureland was a nice little indie romantic comedy, kind of in the same vain as Juno. It won't set the world alight but it's very well acted and anything that gives Bill Hader screentime is ok by me. On the romantic comedy front, 500 days of summer was definitely the best of the year.
Similarly titled, and featuring the same actor in a leading role, Zombieland definitely gos into the best films of the year for me. Pure entertainment from start to finish - absolutely hilarious
Coen Bros step with ease into the best of the year category again with a Serious Man. God knows how they keep churning out such gems. A couple of weeks a go I saw another great little flick form Richard linklater called Me & Orson Welles. Deserves to be sen by a lot more people.

There were a lot of disappointments this year though. The remake of Pelham 123 was terrible. Inglorious Basterds was enjoyable, but there was something missing from it. Just prevents it from being great.
Wolverine was an awful addition to the X-Men series. The less said about that one the better. Public Enemies was a compelling film. Good to watch, but ultimately shallow and a bit disappointing.
Don't evenget me started on the oeverhyped dross that is The Wrestler.
Terminator Salvation was a very enjoyable action movie and a worthy addition to the series. Still not a patch on the original 2 though. Transformers 2, I had high hopes for. Turned out to be one of the worst movies ever made.

Anyway, here's my top 10 of 2009 in no particular order:

    Up
    Moon
    Star Trek
    Avatar
    (500) Days of Summer
    Zombieland
    The Hangover
    A Serious Man
    Me and Orson Welles
    Frost/Nixon
I'll Ride The Wave Where It Takes Me
  • Inglorious Basterds

(haven't seen moon, avatar and star trek yet)
  • For me: Moon
I am a fan of Star Trek series, so it was also good enough.

The Hangover was one of the funniest movies I have seen in years. Inglorious Basterds was also very good. The Ugly Truth was very funny as well. I was reluctant to see it at first but was surprised at how funny it was.
He who forgets will be destined to remember.

  • Well, I've been completely outta sight (outta mind) and outta touch with film this year, but am diggin' the HITCH HIKER review and analysis of that top ten. Have been aware of these movies, but just ain't seen 'em, so will endeavour to check them out.

With the EXCEPTION of the James Cameron one. He is a whore. And most of his movies stink, like a sackful of assholes !!

    No offence.

Hahaha, none taken but I do disagree. I'd say almost all of his movies push cinematic boundaries. Terminator, T2, The Abyss, Aliens, Titanic, and now Avatar - all huge leaps forward in effects a(e. Well, maybe not the first Terminator, but it still looks good 25 years on and it was made on a shoestring. All great films in their own right too (except Titanic)....And True Lies was fun :)

  • ya know, i see a LOT of films every year. i'd need a list to remember/compare.
from those i've seen mentioned so far, tho i've not seen them all (especially a serious man, can't wait til it's released on DVD) i'd go with inglourious basterds, tho public enemies was a damn fine flick. oh and i loved duplicity, tho wouldn't say it is best of the year.
    Stay with me...

It states right on the page you linked ... "Theatrical Release: Oct 24, 2008 "

And actually, it was made in 2004 ... the English release is the Oct 2008 version.

    Still, great flick.

The book was written in 2004, the (Swedish-language) film was late 2008 but only got a wide release in 2009. One of the best films I've ever seen and definitely my film of the year. Moon was brill too. Can't think of too much else I was mad about. Went to the re-release of the Godfather, was great to see it on the big screen.

ok, so the film made it's debut in early 2008, the English version in October.

    Just saying, it's a 2008 film, not 2009.

The Asian mafia leader was hysterical. I actually went to a lot of movies this year, the ones besides the Hangover that I enjoyed were "Gran Torino" (technically an 08 movie), 500 Days of Summer and Up in the Air.
