Tiger Woods Linked to Steroids: Will the Biggest Tiger Bomb of All Explode?

Can the news get any worse for Tiger Woods?

The New York Times has reported that a Canadian doctor that has treated Woods, swimmer Dana Torres, and NFL players is suspected of providing athletes with performance-enhancing drugs.

Dr. Anthony Galea was found with human growth hormone and Actovegin, a drug extracted from calf's blood, in his bag at the U.S./Canada border in late September. He was arrested Oct. 15 in Toronto by Canadian police.

By now everyone and their 90-year-old grandma is aware of the "extracurricular" antics of Woods over the years that came to life Nov. 27. His personal life has been completely trashed and beaten to a pulp. Women are looking at him the same way PETA looks at Mike Vick.

He has lost some sponsors, but not the top dogs like Nike and Gatorade, so while the short-term effects of the infidelity mess are brutal, long-term it won't be a problem (at least that's what Nike CEO Phil Knight believes).

The long-term issue that players of any sport can't shed in this millennium is getting linked to performance-enhancing drugs. Countless baseball players' legacies have forever been tainted. The lasting image of players like Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and Mark McGwire is needles and lies. Same with cyclist Floyd Landis and track stars Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery, among other Olympians.

We became accustomed to being skeptical of every outstanding performance in almost every sport—but not golf.

Never had there even been a whisper of Woods taking PEDs. He has steamrolled the best players in the world for over 13 years now and never caught a whiff of fishiness from the fans or the PGA.

Dr. Galea said Woods was referred to him by the golfer’s agents, who were trying to speed up the pace of his rehabilitation after knee surgery in June 2008. The doctor said he flew to Orlando, Fla., at least four times to give Woods the platelet therapy at his home.

While the reports are nothing but allegations, the damage has been done. Golf is now going to be thrown under the microscope as we lose confidence in the truthfulness of yet another sport.

Woods is taking an "indefinite leave" from golf, and the speculation on his return is all over the board. He wanted to let the affair saga blow over. The best way to do that requires one to vanish and let the awful American memory forget.

But the speculation of using PEDs will not go away once he returns to the links. The questions he will be answering will turn from his off the course "game" to his on the course performance enhancements.

This is getting ugly for Woods and the PGA. Buckle up, folks—the "Tiger Zoo" reached a boiling point, and now it could extend to a volcanic eruption.

Feel free to read about the prodecure Galea performed for Tiger before blowing this out of control. Something that many many many athletes have had done by him to speed up their recovery.
  • Headlines and "connections" like this annoy the hell out of me. Sure, anything is possible, and there may be more to the story, but... right now, a doc was arrested with a little bit of PEDs in his bag.

Because this doc saw Woods a few times, the headline is "Tiger Linked to Steroids".

Years ago I went to a doctor for a shoulder injury, and like a year later he was arrested for prescription drug crimes. If I was famous, I guess the headline could have been "Blackredyellow linked to oxycodin ring" when in reality the only link there is a doc who had my shoulder x-rayed.

you all believe this why? he fucked around on his wife so that immediately makes everything else about the man suspect? must be nice being so morally superior

Yeah, and swimmer Dara Torres was "linked" to this guy too, the same athlete who went to the drug testing agency and requested to be tested to avoid the allegations because of her success at her age.

  • How would steroids affect his playing. Golf is not about stamina and strength. It's about strategy and aim.

btw - as a woman, i do not look at tiger as peta does mike vick. not at ALL. not even in the same ballpark.
honestly, i could not give a shit what tiger did, personally. i really don't care professionally, either...but in regards to the public, the sport, etc....yea, drugs do matter. who he chooses to fuck around with, eh, not so much.

Have you not heard of "Tiger-proofing (lengthening) courses"? Have you not heard breathless announcers drooling over Eldrick's strength and "workout routine"?

btw - PGA doesn't test for HGH.

I'll be the bad guy here, so feel free to tell me why there's no way Eldrick could be doing PEDs. No hard feelings ;) .

Um, so you guys are saying that the only reason that people might be suspicious of poor Tiger is because he's recently been caught cheating on his wife?
I realize being an arrogant duplicitous asshole in one aspect of your life doesn't necessarily spill over into others, but it frequently does.
It's reasonable to expect that if a doctor who treated him only last year has been caught with the goods, people are going to look askance.
Woods is a high profile figure. It doesn't mean he's being railroaded.
But after the news of the last few weeks, I'd say just about EVERYthing he does is going to be scrutinized. The fact that he got away with so much for so long will have plenty of people wondering if he's been getting away with anything else.
    It's natural human curiosity.

    It's natural human curiosity.

This is true, but ultimately it's Tiger and his wife's business, and maybe the women he dipped his wick in. (just my opinion, I guess.)

One of the many negatives to being a public figure = anything you do in your personal life seems to become everyones business.

    I like being a schmuck. :D

yeah its a little more than that though. I am not commenting on the PED's, but the affair issue, is a little more complicated. The guy, before this story broke was viewed as a family man, whose biggest problem was swearing on the golf course. Tiger had affairs with 12 women, 2 of them prostitutes. This is more than the usual affair story. Additionally, it involved his wife chasing and hitting him with a golf club. Lastly, this affair involved the most dominant golfer of our time, and of all time, While I agree the media should be focusing on more pressing matters, as a person who pre-car accident thought of Tiger as a pretty normal, family man.

Tiger Woods is part of Al Qaeda.

People really need to shut the fuck up about this guy.

  • I am a licensed golf instructor and this is really just ignorant on so many levels. First Tiger has been destroying everyone many years before he had this doctor treat him. Second he no longer even hits the ball near as far as he did, and that's on purpose from him. He wants more accuracy, does steriods help your accuracy....no. Third and this is why I mentioned my golf background, steriods would hurt your short game. The short game is where Tiger is killing people. He is the best putter in the world, he makes puts folks. If he is in the ruff 10 yards from the green short sided he puts it 1 foot from the cup, you don't need steriods to hit the ball 10 yards with spin. You need feel, practice and imagination. Steriods would hurt 99 percent of golfers not help them.

    1. he is nowhere close to being the best putter in the world
    2. steroids are often about regeneration - people can train longer and harder because steroids allow them to recover faster ...

i hinted at this scandal in the other tiger thread last week ... from the person i heard it from who has connections to the doctor ... he has used banned substances ...

    1. He's the best putter in the world...when it counts. That's a fucking fact. Other golfers agree that he's the best putter in the world. If you had an 18 foot putt with 3 breaks and one of your children's lives depended on it, do you pick anyone other than Tiger? Don't be ignorant.

    2. Tiger could piss anabolic steroids and it wouldn't bother me.

    1. He is by far the greatest putter in the world. Jim Furyk and Brad Faxon are second and third. Every golfer on tour will back that up.

    2. It will help you train longer, but it would kill your touch around the greens. Over 60 percent of your golf is from 100 yards and in. This is not debate it is fact.

    1. maybe clutch putter ... but there are no stats to back your statement ... also - if he indeed was the best putter in the world - he would have won every major last year ... basically, his putting lost those majors for him ...

    2. it depends on how he's using those steroids ... the guy had major knee surgery ... he could have just used it to help his recovery ... also - how can you say training longer will kill your touch? ... that makes no sense whatsoever ... i would say that golfers that practice the most on their short games are gonna be better in general ...
