I've seen alot of these lists on this site and others and agree with most picks, but am glad to see domeone put NIN With Teeth, a great album. I only feel that White Stripes' Get Behind Me Satan was their best, but nist lists have Elephant listed. But Get Behind Me Satan is simply my favorite.

How in the world can you have Plans in your list and not Transatlanticism?

IMO, Plans is by far their worst album ... everyone has a different opinion, I know ... but, man, Plans ahead of Trans? I just don't get it.

btw ... see here for more album of the decade comments ... viewtopic.php?f=9&t=119457&p=2687332&hilit=death+cab#p2687332

    18.Pearl Jam - Binaural
19.Randy Newman - Harps and Angels
20.Low Anthem - Oh My God, Charlie Darwin

That was kinda fun to do. Some of the placings could easily be changed around - I love all these albums and it's hard to rank them. I would say the first seven are the ones I listen to the most, though. I could have chucked another couple of Radiohead and Ryan Adams albums in there but tried to share the love a bit. ;)

I love Transatlanticism. I really do. It was the album that introduced me to Death Cab. But I think Plans is a better album from start to finish. Just brilliant, catchy songs. I love Narrow Stairs too.
It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.

I find it fascinating that so many people are listing Binaural. I couldn't put an album on my list where the first 3 tracks (Breakerfall, God's Dice, Evacuation) are throwaways and no song on the album is among my favorite 25 songs by the band.
It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.
  • I love all 3 of those songs, and I could easily say Light Years, Insignificance and Parting Ways are in my top 25 pearl jam songs as well.

  • It really shocks me to see how my taste in music is so different to most peoples who post on here.
    Astoria 20/04/06, Leeds 25/08/06, Prague 22/09/06, Wembley 18/06/07,
    Dusseldorf 21/06/07, Manchester 17/08/09, London 18/08/09, LA 06/10/09, LA 07/10/09.

Ain't gonna be any middle anymore.
  • It was an awful decade and only the 80s have less depth in terms of great albums. 60s, 70s and 90s; I'd be pushed hard to cut it down to a top 100, this decade I couldn't sincerely fill a top 25 with "great" albums.

I actually love the self-titled album. Probably my fourth favorite Pearl Jam album. And I don't think it's been a shitty decade. Actually, it's been a fantastic one. Just really different from the 90s, and different to me is good. I suppose it has been, in lieu of a better term, the decade of "indie rock." Most of the albums on my list didn't near a million copies sold. The average mainstream rock fan probably has never listened to many of them, at least not all the way through. Things have changed.

As for the person defending Binaural, I totally get that other people enjoy the album. And I enjoy parts of it. But for me, it is the worst Pearl Jam album. I think the band even referred to it as their black sheep. In a decade where there's been so much great music, it's hard for me to fathom Binaural being in the top 25, or even top 50 or 100. But again, this is all about opinion. I am sure people would question many of my choices.
It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.
  • I hear ya on the self-titled album, I love it also. In fact, I think the band had a really strong decade with S/T, Backspacer, and - you guessed it! - Binaural. To me, Riot Act was the lone misstep. Back to Binaural - it's clear from reading the boards for years that this is a very divisive album, so for now we'll all have to agree to disagree! But, I will add my two cents - I think it's one of the band's richest albums that rewards repeated listens, and has grown on me each year of this decade. I think Insignificance, Grievance, Parting Ways, Sleight of Hand, Of the Girl, Breakerfall are all some of the best the band's ever recorded. Great album, IMHO.

How could I forget to include Nothing as it Seems in my list of great songs from that album?? Meant to include it - killer song.

what do you mean less depth in terms of great albums. are you saying there weren't 25 great albums in the past 10 years? maybe you just haven't bothered to listen to enough music to find the ones you like.

I meant really GREAT albums. Albums that will really be remembered forever. There are a few of these lists floating around at the moment on the net and I tried to make one just for fun but it has been a very mediocre decade. Albums that make a lot of the top 50s in this decade wouldn't stand a chance in many other decades. You are right that I haven't explored as much this decade, but I did spend three years working in record stores during that period and the best of it still doesn't match up. It's only my opinion but only the 80s were worse...

You are right that I haven't explored as much this decade, but I did spend three years working in record stores during that period and the best of it still doesn't match up. It's only my opinion but only the 80s were worse...

i think you might be right in a way. i think there have been a lot of great albums released this decade, but i agree that a lot of them might not be remembered forever. hell, some people have forgotten about them already. i think the fans of said albums however, will remember them forever. i think there are two major factors to blame for this. one being that the great albums of today aren't really part of the mainstream. i'm sure there were a lot of great records from the other decades that flew under the radar, but you also had great albums that had huge success in the mainstream. the 60's and 70's had the beatles, dylan, the stones, the dead, velvet underground, zeppelin, the clash, hendrix, the who, floyd, springsteen, the doors etc. the 80's had prince, the talking heads, a lot of carry overs fromt he previous decades (don't listen to a lot of 80's music) and the early 90's had the grunge movement. these artists were pumping out classics and also happened to be huge mainstream acts. i don't know too many people that don't know the names i've just mentioned, but i bet if you asked people if they ever heard of wilco, 80% would ask you if you were talking about a gas station.
i think the other factor is that the internet has really exploded this decade. it's almost like an overload of music, and it makes it harder for certain bands to gain that recognition of greatness from media, which might skew the public perception. a lot of people don't listen to albums anymore. people shuffle their i pods and albums are downloaded without artwork and often not even put onto their own disc by the owner. i can see how someone who isn't actively searching new music could think this decade has been pretty weak. you have the mainstream media trying to convince you that the new u2, coldplay, green day and springsteen albums are worthy of 5 star reviews, and that kanye west is a genius. you have great bands from the 90's like pearl jam and oasis who have, in my opinion, put out a rather boring collection of albums this decade (aside from riot act!). i think if some of the great albums this decade were a little more well known, the past ten years would look pretty great. anyway, i'm gonna cut this short because i'm a bit busy and shouldn't really be playing on a message board right now, but i think you get the point. maybe over time, some of this music will get the respect it deserves.

I agree, I Think It's their best after Vs and Ten.
I hear ya on the self-titled album, I love it also.

Good point and I think that the internet is changing music so quickly it is difficult for us to keep up. However, a lot of the great albums from the 60s and 70s surfaced some years later as real classics and got the recognition they deserved - like Can, Love, Beefheart, Television, New York Dolls, Neu, Johnathon Richman, Pere Ubu, etc. Not great commercial sucesses but good stuff always gets found out eventually. Hopefully, some of the great stuff from this decade will get recognised instead of just the mainstream stuff.

I rate the 90s very highly because I'm British and we had our own explosion after grunge was dethroned and 'Brit Pop' really did produce some amazing work. Blur 'Parklife' and 'Modern Life Is Rubbish', Suede "dog Man Star' and the first album, Underworld, Portishead, Massive Attack, Longpigs 'The Sun Is Often Out', The Las, MSPs masterpiece "The Holy Bible', Pulp, The Verve, Oasis and so on. The list really does go on and on. It really was an exciting time to be British and although there was some dross about at the time, plenty of those albums still stand up as works of real artistic merit. Perhaps my own opinion is a little Anglophilic as I don't see the British music scene as having done much during the last ten years. Sure, there have been bits and pieces, plenty of Libertines rip off bands, but nothing like the excitement of that era. It was jam packed with great bands and I think that the tag Brit POP put a lot of people off, it was a real and very valid rock scene.

Listen to me getting old and starry eyed!!
we're all going to the same place...

I find it fascinating that so many people are listing Binaural.
i think the real joke is all the "pearl jam" and "backspacer" love... i know its been a shitty decade but come on!

Avocado is on my list because it came out at a life changing time for me and is really more about where i was and what i was going through at that time and how that album played into that and affected me at the time, cheesy i know. I saw 14 shows on that tour so that helps as well.
