Sick of the corporate world...

I've been in the corporate world for almost 3 yrs now.
And its taking a toll on my stress levels.
All I've seen is back stabbing, jealousy, rumours, vulture like behaviour and greed.
A sniff of blood and they are all over you like sharks.
You work with the worst lot of people imaginable and question yourself daily, wtf am I doing here, is this what it's about for the next 40 year until retirement?

What to do with myself....
Learn a trade, do a music course, try hard to join a band/start a band?
Lost don't know which direction to go, but never back to corporate world I reckon.
Looks like my university studies were a waste of time.

It's not just the corporate world... just reality of working life. You get it everywhere, whatever profession. Welcome to the real world!
  • you should decide what will make you happy and do everything you can to achieve it. Whether it be travelling, changing careers, breeding like a rabbit....just don't wait forever. Think hard about what you enjoy doing and how you could make a living out of it....take me for instance...I'm an artist...what do I love the most, am I passionate about the most? Art, teaching art, art history....so for me the decision is simple...go to uni, do a four year degree, get qualifications, become an art teacher and be able to happily put up with the shit that is working (no matter what you do, or where you are, it's going to have some politics backstabbing etc..)...the point is, if you are passionate about what you are doing...then you will be able to tolerate all that, for the overall enjoyment you get from your job....

Make sense? Just figure out what makes you happy and do it, dude. :)

I doubt you get it being lets say a plumber, electrician, painter....

    Thanks for the advice ;)

So do you teach art at school?
    Or do you paint/design?

  • No probs. YOu should take the advice. No I don't teach art - yet. Well, ok, I have taught art...ran my own private lessons but couldn't keep up with demand...too many kids of my own as well! I design, paint, draw...etc...and taking my own advice - have an interview at ECU next Monday, for admission next Feb! 4 yr double degree...fingers crossed....but seriously...I have spent YEARS debating and deciding, and this is it. Figure out what you want...and figure out a realistic way of making it happen. :)
  • you cant imagine how is it when u work and the rank in your uniform tells who u are, what u can say and if u can say it..

Well, thank you for the compliment! Somehow I doubt it's the breeding that you are after, rather the act that gets the breeding happening?! lol!!!
  • It never hurts to practice LOL

But breeding could be a result of the act of practice
  • Just for the record...I do like practising!

work does not define who you are...work allows you to enjoy the things you want to enjoy in your time off...just do the best you can and stay out of the bullshit that flows at every single job out there...

If you're lucky enough to own your own painting/plumbing/what have you business, then yeah. The only bullshit you hear is from your own internal monologue. But all the trades you mentioned are union trades. And if you think corporate rhetoric is full of bland people who perk up at the chance to backstab, you don't know anyone that's ever been in a union.

I've been in the corporate world for almost 3 months now, and I feel the same way :( The good news is that if I can lost as long as you can, I can pay off my loans and walk away from here scot free when the economy is rebounding.
  • Suck it up maggots!!

    Just kidding... :D

I have been in the corporate world for 20+ years and I have seen things and people who would turn your stomach. I have been sabotaged when I got seriously ill, been lied to, cheated, talked about and lied about. I somehow made it to a pretty senior position and I did it with integrity. If you don't let the system change you, you can make it on your own morals.

I don't think that's necessarily true. Some jobs are truly soul-crushing. I've never seen anyone unhappier than my ex at her current job. The company has been so awful that even in the worst economy in decades, they've had a dozen people out of a company of about 60 choose to quit within the last 6 months. Several people there have developed ulcers and my ex nearly developed an ulcer in her EYE due to this place. That's beyond just normal work reality.

Also, as much as I bitched about waiting tables, I was happier with that gig than I ever have been at any office job I ever held. Sometimes it's not as simple as just "suck it up, it's work and all jobs suck." That's not quite true, some make you more miserable than others.

    Hey Gang,

Its called work for a reason- no one likes it but we all have to do it to get by... the corporate world is just that -crap- but remember Karma is a bitch. What someone does to you it to will happen to them 10 fold. Why dont you just be the positive one in your work enviroment and help spark a change.

Happy thought for today: We all wait for PJ to come to our part of the world and help us forget about the daily rate race for one day :p Plus listening to music daily to help us get bye :D

Lately I have been listening to greivence alot- angry song but it helps with the day!

To the person who said work doesn't have to define you and will be something to afford your joys in your time off. I can't disagree with this enough. Just make a plan for yourself - a real fucking, serious, plan. Stick to it. The point is to not make work your life, but to make life your work. Think about it that way. I know that's incredibly cheesey, but it's the truth.

I don't disagree...I was speaking in general terms...and I've had sole crushing jobs and I've learned from it...mostly, it's what you make it, as well as when it's time to go, it's time to go...

my point is no matter what job someone has, there will be parts that just plain suck and parts that don't...if one lets the just plain suck parts consume them, then they will be miserable...

if one is in a hellish job, they have options...when I was working one of my many hellish/stressful jobs, I quit in my head, did the best I could while I was there, and looked for other employment...

I contend life and work can be two very separate things...if one has a stressful job that doesn't need to spill over into their life...just because I had a shitty day at work, it doesn't ruin my evening...

No but to work for the weekends becomes depressing after a while. To work for two lousy weeks of vacation is a sucker's life.

No, no, no... I make it through a little better because I get 22 vacation days, 10 sick days, and 12 paid holidays. A total of 44 paid days off a year. So I do my best. 8-)

its called work, i love and hate my job. But I am glad its a small comppany so all I have to deal with is being underpaid for my skills, which is better than all the backstabbing crap of larger companies. If you ever want to catch up for a beer or 12 and chat about this, drop me a line.

Oh man, have you ever owned a business? It ain't easy. It comes with its own set of chalenges, one of the largest of which is RUNNING a business and GETTING enough business to survive. Plus you get to pay not only your own share of social security plus the part the employer pays, and if you're unlucky enough to not have a spouse with health benefits from their job that can cover you also, you get to pay your own health insurance too. Its no gravy train.

Oh hell no. I wasn't saying that running a business was a walk in the park. Just that you don't have to worry about coworkers selling you up a river. My old man ran his own business for years and scratched and clawed to put food on the table for the first couple of years. I admire anyone that starts from scratch and makes it. :)
