unfortunately, mr snuggleton has returned home to wellington with me (thanks for asking)... he did make a brave attempt to leap into mr mccready's arms (with mike's blessing) but with my weak girlie throw he went UPPPPPP and then DOOOOWN... and the security guards and Mike laughed. Then security wouldn't just HAND THE DAMN THING to him or give it back to me! I stuck my bottom lip out and one of them said "I'll pass it when the boss isnt looking..." but he couldn't. He did give it back to me though and when Mike saw I had the bear again he pointed it out and I tried again but security weren't playing along and Mike said "Oh well." SIGH. I'm just gonna mail the damn thing.

As for the banner.. hahah! Mike saw it straight away (we were front row, right in front of him) and he pointed to his set list and mouthed "it's on here" and then "can i have that?"... I nodded but he was playing so there wasn't much point in trying to throw it... then a couple of songs later he pointed again and mouthed "can i have that?" and that's when the first snuggleton throw happened.

when i heard the intro to black i think everything just went fuzzy because i can't picture any of it except the tears in my eyes, all the lovely 10c people around me cheering and pointing at me and the doo doo doo doo doo doo dooooos. after they finished mike beamed down and we angled the banner so ed could see it and he rushed over to grab it (thanks security!) and held it up then draped it over his foldback monitors. mike then looked down at me and i was able to yell out my thank you.

magical.

i've only just got home though so i'm gonna come back and say stuff later. with photos!

OH! and if anyone has pics of ed with the banner PLEASE show me! i was too busy internally shrieking (ok, and externally) and jumping up and down that i didn't get photos of him actually holding it up. but he laughed when he saw it.

This was the third of four shows I've been lucky enough to attend from Detroit on the OZ/NZ tour (Sydney, Brisbane, Auckland, Christchurch).

I was on the rail in front of Stone. The crowd was the most aggressive that I've seen at a Pearl Jam show since Barcelona '06. Eddie had to stop the show twice to tell the group on Stone's side to take care of each other better. There weren't a ton of Ten Club people at this show (don't know the number, maybe 300 total?), so many of the young general admission people pushed their way to the rail. The energy was great though!

Highlights were Hold On (that's what a lot of people were doing all night) and Eddie's performance with Neil and Liam Finn. Here's a video I took of that song (sorry for the shaky camera, it was a rough night, even during that song).

Congratulations to the fan who made the Black banner that was mentioned earlier in this thread. It was fantastic!

I made this crappy banner to show that people from the USA travel far and wide for Pearl Jam shows too! And to give thanks back to the band, since it was Thanksgiving in the USA during this concert.

From the beginning. We turned up at Mt Smart at about 11.45-12pm and were fans #32-35 on the list. Good effort lazy kiwis. The atmosphere was really nice and relaxed. It was hot in the sun but the breeze in the shade of the trees was almost cold so I doubt anyone got too hot and uncomfortable waiting to be let in. The "Please Play Black" banner was tied to a fence which generated a bit of interest from the crowd which was funny.

After a group effort of putting a pile of merch in the car they moved the 10c line to a "holding area" which was in the sun and I'm still not sure why they did it - to separate us from the plebs? We sat around for what seemed like about an hour before being let in. At this point for some reason my leg cramped. Good one leg. Power walking (not running...) to the front where my flukey friend Shirley who had only JUST turned up was already waiting in front of McCready's spot. She's walked in the wrong entrance and the venue staff had mistaken her for a crew member and gave her a crew wristband.

Liam Finn & EJ were awesome - prefer him in his own shows because he only had 30 minutes so only touched on the madness that we know and love. His dad was sitting side stage which got a cheer. Connan Hosford from Connan and the Mockasins joined him and EJ on stage to do his spooky falsetto vocals on "I'll Be Lightning" and to play drums. After Connan left the stage Elroy Finn joined them on the drums. At one stage one of Liam's mics fell over and a rather handsome stage hand ran on to put it back up again which excited the crowd.. because it was of course Eddie Vedder. The mic fell over again so the stage hand came back out and the crowd chanted "ED-DIE! ED-DIE!" which we tried to counteract with "LEEE-YUM! LEEE-YUM!". He wound up his set with an insane version of Lead Balloon (always the best song of the set) and I could see Stone Gossard shaking his groove thing on the side of the stage.

Ben Harper and Relentless 7 were next - Laura Dern sitting side stage (which was for some reason really weird to see). Ben played a mix of old and new songs and was of course joined by Ed for Under Pressure which whipped the crowd into a delighted frenzy. People were getting pulled out even at this point - though I dunno why cuz there was no crush on our side. One girl got pulled out and then promptly fainted. One guy came out covered in blood. Meanwhile we were grooving in our spot, enjoying the view. Ben held one note for a long long time which seemed to amuse Eddie (one of my photos if of amused Eddie...).

And then... the piano intro... the curtains pulled back to reveal the typewriter backdrop... and the flippin BAND came on stage.

McCready noticed the banner straight away, pointed to his setlist and said "It's on here" which was awesome - because then I didn't have to think about it anymore... Just held the banner and the bear and enjoyed myself.

All of our speculation of what would be first was shot to hell when they started with Daughter and at this point the once mellow crowd went ballistic. The crush was bad enough on our side, but by all accounts it was 10x worse on Stone's side. Ed had to ask 3 times for the crowd to step back to help out security and to preserve the "precious people in the front". At one point he got all stern Mr Vedder, the tough but fair Maths teacher, telling the group of pushing guys that everyone else managed to get their homework in on time, what was their excuse? I saw Mike surveying the crowd and telling the security type chap next to him to pull some people out. Once Ed was happy that the crowd was okay he started having some fun.

Mike looked down at the banner and laughed and asked if he could have it. This happened a couple of times and on the second time I thought, right, this is my chance to get Snuggleton on stage, but I couldn't put my arm back to throw so I tried underarm and yeah.. it went straight up in the air and then straight back down. Epic Fail. I don't think Mike realised there was a book attached (the cartoons) but for some reason he was okay with me trying to lob a little fuzzy bear at him.

Severed Hand was unreal as was Corduroy. One of these songs had a lyric change to acknowledge the 11 year absence (probably Corduroy but it's all a bit of a blur).

Faithfull was dedicated to the crowd who had waited 11 years and were therefore full of faith. Ed said he wasn't sure why it had been so long but it wouldn't be that long before their next visit "Maybe we'll live here for 11 years?"

He mentioned the temperature and how it was much better than the 40whatever degrees they experienced in Sydney. It was actually almost cold at this stage. No one seemed to even break much of a sweat.

Mike nailed Even Flow which led nicely into a song about another guitarist, Johnny Guitar.

Small Town was dedicated to anyone from Te Awamutu which got a big roar and Unemployable to anyone affected by the recession.

Unthought Known was epic but nothing, nothing, compared to Black.

If you watch the youtube video you can hear a high pitched squeal right at the very very beginning. That was me. Then everything went very hazy. I looked around and people were giving me thumbs up and bouncing up and down. I was mesmerized and teary and it was awesome. Before the song even ended (which I can only say with certainty cuz i've now seen the video) Ed noticed the banner and asked for it. He laughed when he got a closer look and held it up for a couple of seconds before draping it over the foldback. He then noticed a Silver Fern flag and grabbed that too to hold up as Given to Fly started.

After GTF Mike came back over to stand in front of us and looked down at me with a big smile on his face. I took this opportunity to put my hand on my heart and yell out my thank you which I'm really grateful for. How often do you actually get the chance to TELL THEM to their faces?

Ed introduced us to Boom - mentioning they've been playing with him for nearly 10 years and this was his first time with them in NZ - I actually thought he was talking about Matt. Last time PJ came here, Jack was the drummer. But that went without ceremony. Boom's introduction led into Wasted Reprise and then Better Man, with Ed asking us to sing the first verse. No matter how many times he does that, he always seems to be blown away by it. He got us to hold one note for a while before launching into the song himself.

Encore break... shrieks of delight, a banner on the foldback, happy happy joy joy.

They came back out and Ed sat down to do Just Breathe...

I managed to film this without incident because it calmed the push right down. Couldn't find McCready because the damn camera man was always in the way, but I'm so glad I managed to film this song. Beautiful.

Another chair was perched next to Ed so we knew what was next - Ben Harper came out for Red Mosquito.

Then the intro to Love Reign O'er Me. I nearly wet myself at this point and screamed in delight but I dunno if the crowd didn't realise or what, no one really reacted. Ed NAILED it. Ohhh those screams... so good.

Do the Evolution was a crowd pleaser - we got to do our spirit fingers to the heavens... and Why Go... oh my GOD. Why Go has always been my favourite McCready solo and he did not disappoint.

During Porch Ed took the opportunity to stalk the stage a little bit. He shuffled his way along the front of the stage over to the far far side to wave to the people in the stands and at the front who probably didn't get much love otherwise.

At one point the nice security man gave me Mr Snuggleton back (he'd been held prisoner out of reach) and Mike noticed I had him again and pointed him out. I tried to get the bear to Mike again but failed again. Mike said "Oh well" and the sound of a little bear's heart breaking can be heard on all bootlegs.

Encore Break.

Ed came back out and introduced Neil Finn - saying when the band first got together and stared selling loads of albums he sat down and wrote Neil a letter telling him how much he loved his music but never sent the letter, but it didn't matter because fate brought them together. He said they were lucky to have 2 special Neil's in their lives - Uncle Neil Young and Neil fucking Finn. The crowd went nutso and Neil came out with Liam in tow. They dedicated "Not Given Lightly" to Chris Knox "who is still with us" (for those who don't know, Chris Knox recently had a severe stroke and the Finn Family recorded a cover of one of Chris' songs that is on a benefit album full of NZ musos). At times Ed didn't seem to know the song so well, but he and the Finns pulled it off beautifully - a fitting tribute.

"Are you ready for a little fixin?"

The crowd punched the air in time to the yeah yeah yeah yeahs.

Ed changed his mind about the setlist here - apparently Alive was axed in favour of RitFW? The lights came on and he bounced from band member to band member to let them know and they ripped into it - bashing tambourines and hurling them into the crowd. Can't remember if it was here or in Ledbetter that Ed did his run down the centre aisle... but either way. He did. Mike went to hand his guitar away after RitFW but Ed asked him for one more and they polished us off with a beautiful Yellow Ledbetter.

Ed thanked everyone in the band and the crowd Boooooomed... Stone whipped his guitar lead and then twirled it around like a pretty little gymnast, they posed infront of the crowd while Liam took a photo of them and then they turned for their final bow.

And with that... it was over. I sincerely hope they enjoyed themselves as much as they seemed to and come back sooner rather than later.
